The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Great book
One of my favorite books!
Used in developmental reading classes at Santa Barbara City College. Students enjoy it. Great historical tie-ins from Civil Rights Movement.
Story took too long to develop – could have done without the Gaelic word insertions – added nothing to the story line.
I have read this book twice. It is a great story and moved me.
Absolute favorite.
Loved this story. The characters were very well developed and real. Such an emotional, wonderful tale about family and friends who become like family. I also learned a lot about beekeeping and the importance of bees.
Typical southern novel
This book is wonderful. It took me to a place I’ve never been and made me relate to it on every level. It’s heartwarming, inspiring, and also a tear jerker (in places) but will leave you wanting to read more of her books.
Loved this book!
Excellent book that deals with the effects of the Civil Rights movement.
One of my all-time favorites! A beautifully-written deeply-felt story.
Really enjoyed this place. Very different and made me think about other people’s views on race.
Somewhere between The Color Purple and the movie Bagdhad Cafe lies this novel. No wonder it was a bestseller!
I/m on my second read I see more in it this time
This is the type of book everyone should be required to read. Very insightful and meaningful. So grateful to the author of The Secret LIfe of Bees.
The family tries to overcome situations. You will enjoy their successes and feel their challenges. Excellent characters, can’t-put-down story.
The movie was excellent.
A story of a girl who runs away from a mean father to another town and ends up learning about a mother she barely remembers who was killed when she was young. It is well written and a book that makes you ponder long after it’s read.
Good book. I will read more of this authors books.
