The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Loved this book!
There are marvelously real lessons to be learned in the unlikely scenario of a white girl coming of age while living in a family of black women in the American South.
Really good
My favorite book.

Very good book! Loved it!
I think this is a good book, just not for me. It is realistic and I can see where it could actually happen. It was hard for me to read because of the realistic content.
very interesting plotline, kind of a feel good book
This was a great book. I very enjoyed reading it. The kind of book you are sad to finish because it is over.

This is a great book with an amazing story. Sue Monk Kidd is a marvelous story-teller and brilliant writer! I could not put this book down, finished it in one day, and wanted to read it all over again! I strongly recommend this book!
Take the time to read well worth it
Kept my interest ’til the end. I’m not interested in reading it again. Thus the 4 * rating.
Loved the characters in this tale.
This book is a whirlwind from start to finish, and you feel all of the things Lily feels, from happiness to fear to confusion. It is a beautiful coming of age story in the deep south during Jim Crow. The theme of bees is both enchanting and moving, and the characters are warm, full and lifelike.
