The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

I loved how the characters related to one another-their love and acceptance of their differences.
Very entertaining. An original take on this era. Good, not great writer. Too easy to read really. Language lacked depth.
I really liked reading about how others view Mary, the mother of God. I was pulling for Lily all through her search.
I loved this book!
I read this book when it was first released (maybe 10 years ago) and loved it. I just bought it for my nook reader at a good price and will read it again.
Every one should have a chance to read this wonderful coming of age book
Set in a time of racial inequality and unrest in the southern US, this story gives a vivid picture of life seen through the eyes of a white teen. She learns how naive she has been. The 1960’s as a period of condoned punishment, in this case basically child abuse, is brought to light. Great character development, with a number of different personality types, makes this book an entertaining read.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were realistic, imperfect and I loved getting a glimpse into their lives. This book has a lot of themes of human failings without being preachy. I felt these characters were just who they are, good or bad. There is a real humanity to this story.
Sue Monk Kidd never disappoints. This is a beautiful story that makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

Wonderful! This book follows a creative bright teen who runs away from abuse with her caretaker, breaking the caretakers out of jail to go on the run to a place she knows nothing about. She searches for who her dead mother is.
