The multi-million bestselling novel about a young girl’s journey towards healing and the transforming power of love, from the award-winning author of The Invention of Wings and The Book of Longings Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily’s … mother was killed. When Lily’s fierce-hearted black “stand-in mother,” Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina–a town that holds the secret to her mother’s past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sister, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female power, a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

Loved this book. Dealt with painful, tender feelings and resolved generational family issues. The main characters are real and lovable from the start. The author has a gift for making the reader feel like a part of the family. And amazingly, since reading the book, I’ve had such a profound love and respect for bees that my fear of them has disappeared completely…
Actually my sister-in-law forgot to take this home. I had nothing to read, so I picked it up and read it. Was not disappoint.
One of my top 10 favorite books. Lovely story of the strength and generosity of the human heart.
I read this book twice. Loved the characters, and learned interesting things about the bees.
Good book!
I loved this book! There wasn’t a single part of it that didn’t grab my attention.
I read so many books, that they all seem to run together. Not this one, I read this a couple years ago, and still I remember this wonderful book
Incredible book
The most important issues for the characters were left unsettled.
The Best!!
Not my typical read, but I throughly enjoyed it. I was transported to the south during the civil Rights movement. The characters were well written and totally believable.
I got hooked on the story when I saw the film, which I recently purchased for my home library. Then I read the book; the characters from the film were firmly in my mind and they really fit. Great read, inspirational, touching, moving, and so much more, especially from a first time novelist.
Wonderful story – great characters.
I read this a long time ago but it is one of my favorite books ever.
This book showcases so much that is wrong with the world, and so much that is right! I really didn’t want it to end. Compelling, thought provoking and filled with heart; this is one of the best books I’ve ever read!
Intelligent writing. Great characters. Well worth investment of your time. Thank-you!
I just love this book. I’m presently reading it and can’t seem to put it down. The characters are wonderful and the writing just makes you smile.
This is one of my FAVORITE books! I go back and reread it every once in a while. It’s a story set in the South about a young girl. Growing up in the South when the negroes were just being able to register to vote. Troubled times. She goes to live with some wonderful black sisters who take care of her.
Classic Sue Monk. A book everyone should read.
Excellent slice of life; growing up in a household with a bitter Dad was difficult to read. Love is never a simple thing, but it can be if you allow it to permeate in your life.
