Donna Tartt, winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for her most recent novel, The Goldfinch, established herself as a major talent with The Secret History, which has become a contemporary classic.Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum … a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality their lives are changed profoundly and forever, and they discover how hard it can be to truly live and how easy it is to kill.

I believe I chose this book The Secret History as it was on my friend Paul’s read list. It sounded like a great novel, and I hadn’t heard of it before despite it being published for many years.
I took the chance…
It was a difficult read at first. I started it in March figuring I’d keep on trekking with this year’s “Reading Challenge” after a …
One of my favorite books of all time. I have read it more times than I can count.
One of the best debut novels I’ve ever read – dark and enticing.
Once upon a time, there was college, and vistas opened up before the narrator. THOSE VISTAS WERE NOT WHAT THEY SEEMED.
When I first started reading this book, I went, “Great, another college book.” I hadn’t realized that was a thing until I’d read this book, though–the boring situation from which the character comes, the thrilling new college, …
This book was recommended to me back in 1998? I think. I was in college, my professor thought I’d love it… and I did. I loved the mystery. I loved the setting of a upper class school, and that the main character wasn’t nearly rich enough to be running with the crowd he was with. But here’s the part that I didn’t like, so *SPOILERS!!!* Donna Tart …
Tedious.
one of my favorite books
I’d heard of all the praise for “The Secret History” before reading it so I was a little skeptical about whether it would live up to the hype, and I’m happy to say it.
It tells the story of six college classmates who are inspired by an extravagant and strict professor of classics to live life according to the ancient greeks values. With a dark …
Who doesn’t love a book by Donna Tartt? Really enjoyed this novel. Kept me up a few nights.
The story of this book could be summed up in 200 pages instead of the 600 it took for me to read it. It was a good story but I didn’t really connect with any of the characters or with the story all that much.
A literary masterpiece.
