What would you do if you were an orphan, too old to stay at the orphanage, with no job and no place to go? You’d check with the pastor about being a mail order bride. As it turns out the pastor needed an escort for his grandmother. This was the beginning of her new life. One that will take her on a journey to find if she has any true relatives.
This is a great book and one I think you’ll enjoy!
The Lockets and Lace series has been so much fun. I love seeing how the authors are going to tie Wilhelm Mueller, the jeweler, to one of the characters in their book. Barbara Goss does this beautifully while giving Elizabeth (Betsy) a past. An interesting story line and characters made this a fun book to read. I totally enjoyed following the story of Noah and Betsy. I look forward to more in this series and more by Barbara Goss
I loved this book in the multi author Lockets and Lace Series! Betsy Wheeler grew up in an orphanage. She was engaged to be married when her fiance ran off with the new person she was training to take her place at their workplace. She was thrown out of the apartment they had rented and went to her pastor for help. He invited her to stay with them and possibly become companion to a woman staying with them. His sister in law. She accepted and it worked out to accept the job as well.
Noah Sommers is a Sheriff in Muddy Creek where they were traveling to. He was also Wilma’s grandson. He took an instant dislike to Betsy. She was a REDHEAD! As time moves on his attitude slowly changes.
A little sleuthing by Noah opens up a new family for Betsy, but leads to a new can of worms from her past. A secret Diary, a families misfortune and a little criminal activity thrown into the mix makes for an exciting book. You won’t want to miss this one! Barb Goss has indeed woven a fantastic story! Her characters jump off the page and right into your heart.
I received an ARC of this book and am choosing to leave an honest review.
This is an inspirational story about an orphan and her journey to a family. There is mention of abuse, but a good redemption story.
Book 13 in the Lockets & Lace Series, Betsy and Noah’s story is a sweet short Historical Christian Romance. The storyline has a little suspense and intrigue. Lili Dubuque did a good job with the narration.
This was an interesting story! A young orphaned woman is up for a few changes in her life and she gets more than she’s bargained for.
I wasn’t as fond of the narrator though. I had a hard time distinguishing who was talking and all the characters seemed to have the same cadence to their voices.
I’ve been enjoying this whole series and look forward to reading or listening to more.
I received a free copy of this audiobook and this review is my honest opinion.
Lovely Romantic Mystery!
A very good combination of talented author, Barbara Goss and narrator, Lili Dubuque for this audiobook which I enjoyed thoroughly.
The story was good, the characters strong, the villains believable and not nice people, the elderly relations absolutely delightful, the mystery was solved and the romancing and happily ever after was very sweet.
In a nutshell, very readable or ‘listenable’ to and I definitely recommend it.
I listened to the audiobook version and my unbiased review above is given voluntarily.
The Secret Diary
Lockets and Lace, Book 13
By: Barbara Goss
Narrated by: Lili Dubuque
A little twist to this historical romance, we meet Betsy, homeless and unemployed. After going to church to pray for help, she finds herself now the companion to Wilma who is traveling to see her grandson Noah. Not only is this a miracle for Betsy, but this match is integral to our story. Wilma is a spunky woman, and while older and in need of some assistance, I love her sage advice and grandmotherly way with Betsy. Having Noah as her grandson is just icing on the cake! Noah and Betsy’s first encounter is rocky, but will they find a common ground? These two have sparks that ignite, but we can only hope they turn passionate! Betsy’s journey to find out about her family is not only eye opening, but has elements of surprise We meet all kinds of people, root for the good, set the bad to rights and enjoy Betsy.
Narrated by Lili Dubuque, we get the best of all these characters, from the grandmothers to the outlaws. She paces the story well and I really enjoyed her voices. Full of action, family conversations and growing love, we get a little of everything through her performance.

couldnt put down
Sheriff Noah Sommers intends to know if Betsy Wheeler’s dad and brother are crooks.
Betsy is surprised at what she finds in her mom’s diary…hidden secrets she would have never fathomed.
There’s chemistry right away between Betsy and Noah; however not the good kind. As the story unfolds so does their budding relationship.
This is a mysterious well written clean read. You’ll have to read it yourself to learn what happens between Betsy and Noah. It’s inspiring, uplifting, and suspenseful.
I listened to the audio which was well done. I found Betsy story to be interesting with lots of mystery and some intrigue that the secret diary helps to solve. I loved the characters in this story and the way the story is set up.
A beautiful read/listen about an orphan who finds acceptance and love with an older lady and her grandson. They become like family to her and by the hand of God (a strange coincidence some would say) she ended up finding out some about her past which led her to potential relatives. As this was going on, a slow sweet romance developed as well
The narrator did a great job with this book.
I received this audiobook free from the author and I am voluntarily leaving this review.
This is a good, clean and well written story. Betsy Wheeler along with Irma Walkins and Hope Carlson grew up in an orphanage together. Betsy was to get married to Edward Abbott ,they worked at a meat market. While training someone to take her place the other girl and Edward eloped leaving Betsy no where to go. Reverend Holmes hired her as a companion to take is mother in law ,Wilma Bancroft to St. Joseph, Mo. to a little town called Muddy Creek. I loved this story and characters. There she met the sheriff who was Wilma’s grandson. He thought she was out to swindle his grandmother. I was given a ARC and this is my honest opinion. This story has drama, lies and deception and keep you wanting to see what is next.
A young woman on a journey to find out more about her parents who left her at an orphanage. This journey will take her on paths unexpected, dangerous and finding love. Sometimes family is more than a bloodline. I received a complimentary audio and this review is voluntary.
