Dear Jerk Across the Street, sorry for accidentally walking in on you and catching an eyeful of your—equipment. And hard pass on the open invitation to join you in the shower “anytime”, A-hole.That’s the note I should’ve written. Instead I sent a pleasant and apologetic version.Had I known Phoenix “Nix” Russo would’ve been the neighbor from hell, I’d have told him right where he could shove my … him right where he could shove my words.
Nix is the big man on campus with everyone lined up at his games to make sure he knows it. Sure, he’s got piercing blue eyes, abs that don’t quit and a smile that could set fire to a set of panties from a hundred yards away, but he’s also the biggest pain in my ass.
Dear Pink-Haired Menace, learn how to take a joke and stop being such a kill-joy…
Elle Masterson called the cops on one of my parties—again. My sweet talking usually gets me out of trouble, but this time it got me into a nice pair of silver handcuffs. Now I’m on a reputation rehab tour with a stop at a spring break community service project.
Guess who’s my new boss?
Now we’re shoulder to shoulder, sweaty, tired and…she’s not anything like I expected. There might just be a heart under that hardass exterior. She’s invading my dreams and I can’t shake the feeling she’s the key to unlocking a piece of me that I’ve hidden away.
It’s only a matter of time until she finds out why I’m really here.
Maybe I can break through her walls and into her heart before that happens…one screw at a time.

This is an Hate to Love Romance….
The Second they Met, I WAS HOOKED!! Well hello there Nix !!! Elle was definitely greeted with more than she expected!!
I loved Elle, a girl most definitely on a mission, struggling with the weight on her shoulders and the pressure she put herself under. A girl who hasn’t seen the good side of love and determined to succeed!!
Nix a star quarterback, family pressure weighing heavily on him and on a path leading him to a place his heart didn’t lie.
What can i say !! The angst and animosity between these two had my toes curling and i didn’t know who i loved the most!! One minute my heart was with Nix, and i pitied the wrath he got from Elle, though the next minute i’d want to “nut” punch Nix for the anguish he was causing Elle. How could this pair even be friends?? From the beginning the chemistry burned between them, even if they were the last to see or feel it !! But their journey to finding it had me entranced in the pages and their relationship. I adored how this author has written a book that gives back your faith in romance. Love CAN come from the most unexpected circumstances, and Your Person, the one who gives you strength, the one who makes you believe in yourself, the one who gives you their heart and leads you to being the person you should be!!! I have loved this series, but Nix and Elle have definitely taken their own special little place in my heart !!!
There are certain things I’ve come to expect when I pick up a Maya Hughes book, regardless of the trope. Wit and snark, terrific banter, swoony romance with a couple that is guaranteed to make me a little crazy at times, wonderfully quirky characters, including the secondary peeps, and even a tear or two when the feels get crazy. Well, let me tell you, she’s brought her A-game with The Second We Met. Nix and Elle are the focus of this second book in the Fulton U series, and they check every box for an engaging romantic comedy and then some. Enemies-to-lovers is one my favorite romance tropes. I love watching a couple reach that tip-over point and start to fall for each other, and Nix and Elle are just so lovable that you can’t help but root for them. If you’re familiar with this author’s books, then it’s not hard to guess that we’ll get a conclusion loaded with feels, one that will leave you with a smile and a warm feeling in your heart. But the real fun is in the journey, and this couple travels that road in style. To sum it up, The Second We Met is great addition to this series and another terrific romance from Maya Hughes.
An enemies to lovers romance with all the swoons and heart! You don’t want to miss out on this laugh out loud book with all the feels.
Maya Hughes scored the touchdown to win the game with her latest read, The Second We Met!
I don’t think another author can match Maya Hughes’ skills with writing in the sports romance genre! I have been hooked since the first King of Riitenhouse read, and then was rended speechless reading The Perfect First & The Second We Met. I don’t want to give away anything with The Second We Met, trust me the book must be read first hand with the awesome storyline & plots, between the heat & banter, this read is just hot! The Second Elle & Nix Met, it was on, anything to goad the other on, Elle was sassy & Nix definitely loved to push her buttons and The Second They Met it was combustible, sparks flew. Only to meet again when they both help at the same charity. They would have had a much smoother journey to a HEA if they both dropped all the preconceived notions & tried to not judge. By the end of the book, Nix comes across as hot as …. , having so many layers, being totally well-rounded, swoon-worthy, he would make an amazing book boyfriend. Definitely recommend any book Maya Hughes writes in the sports romance genre, but, especially both books so far in this series, The Perfect First & The Second We Met. Hopefully we will see Nix as a secondary character in some of the future Maya’s books because he’s not only sexy & fun, he’s hot, hot, hot ….. Cue the ice & fan! The Second We Met, a definite Must Read! And, while I believe ‘must read’ is an overused term, it’s definitely not when referring to one-clicking this must read, The Second We Met!
While I did receive an advanced copy from the author, I am voluntarily leaving my own opinion with this voluntary, unsolicited review.
I am a big fan of Maya Hughes’ “Kings of Rittenhouse” series and so I figured I should give this series a go as well. I have skipped the first book, but I am known for reading books out of order, so I will go back later and make things right again 😛
I love a good “enemies to lovers” story and this one definitely delivered on that front. I also love me some hot jocks, so hot quarterback Nix, really did it for me 😛
Elle didn’t agree with me on that one though…well at least in the beginning she didn’t. They have been enemies ever since she caught him with his pants down (literally). Their relationship is a volatile one.
That all changes when they are forced to work together on a project and really start to get to know each other better. Maybe she has been too quick to judge Nix….
These two were also quite different. Where Nix was easy going and relaxed, Elle had a more “work and no play” personality. She had no problem throwing her sass around and standing up for what she believed. I did have some small issues with her being so judgemental/insecure. I know she had her reasons, but at times it was a bit annoying for me.
I really enjoyed watching these two fall… The side-characters were pretty awesome as well and I can’t wait to see what’s next. That said… I better go back and start reading book 1 first 😉
ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review
Elle and Nix will take you on an emotional roller coaster. This is the second book in the Fulton U Series but is read as a standalone. They were neighbors and butted heads from the beginning. She got him arrested for a loud party and then he ended up doing community service work and she was his boss. This was a run read that captured my attention right at the beginning and kept my interest. Well written with strong, likable characters and an entertaining storyline. A good enemy to lovers read that I enjoyed.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
This is an emotional enemies to lovers sports romance, Nix and Elle had a memorable first meeting and it went downhill from there. Once they got to know each other while working together, they slowly became friends. I really liked Nix but Elle was definitely harder to like. Overall an enjoyable story.
I love the way Maya Hughes writes her New Adult Romances because even though Elle and Nix were in college they didn’t act like immature adults. Yes Nix was a star football player that was deemed to be a first round draft pick but he wasn’t the stuck-up jock you read about in so many books, he was thoughtful and helpful, and the love and support he showed his grandfather was just beautiful. Don’t get me wrong he did have his moments but they were like little blips for me, something that could be overlooked and forgotten because of everything else.
Elle was a great character, I loved her from the minute she dropped a box when she was moving into her new place and hundreds of condoms fell all over the sidewalk. She was a blast with her take no crap attitude and huge giving heart. She was in a tough situation but she was doing the best she could with the cards she had been dealt.
This book crosses over with part of the timeline in the first book, you do not have to have read THE PERFECT FIRST but I think you will enjoy this read more if you have.
This enemies-to-lovers romance was a steamy read that had you pulling for Elle and Nix before it looked like anything could ever come from their chemistry because of the dislike between the two of them, but you know the old adage “It’s a fine line between love and hate.” I would recommend this to lovers of new adult contemporary romances as well as anyone that enjoys the enemies-to-lovers trope.
Happy Reading!!!
Five pink stars for Elle and Nix !!!
Maya did it again!
I totally loved this book!
It is sweet, funny and sexy.
“The Second We Met” is a college sports romance with enemies to lovers trope.
I really loved Elle and Nix’s a little crazy but the adorable relationship.
Elle is a little different female character I had a chance to meet in books. She is a hard worker but also a girl who spends her free to volunteering than she’s going to parties, like the other people her age.
Elle has a bad experience with relationships and she is afraid to get into a relationship again because she doesn’t want to be cheated by a boy again.
And that is the main reason why her relationship with Nix is a very slow burn.
Nix is everything that you would never imagine he would be.
He is a quarterback star, “Golden Boy”, but he is also the guy who wants to spend time in Grandpa’s restaurant and find the girl with whom he will spend the rest of the life.
Throughout the whole book, Elle and Nix have a lot of ups and downs.
But, what is true love without problems ?!
I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves to read college sports romance with enemies to lovers trope!!!
P.S. I can’t wait for Jules and Berk’s story !!!
4.5 Stars
{I received this as an ARC in exchange for an Honest review}
“The Second We Met” was so GOOD!!! Oh my gosh I loved Nix and Elle!! This book was cute and fun. Nix and Elle are honestly so perfect for each other. Their chemistry is amazing and Nix helps to put Elle in her place and helps her see when she is being too judgmental. Elle helps Nix see what he truly wants out of life. They go so well together!!! They are so sexy and so angsty. I absolutely loved their back and forth. This book had some jaw dropping moments and I loved it!! It is so good y’all. This is an amazing enemies to lovers, new adult romance that you all will want to read. I can’t get enough of these two. I really enjoyed reading their story!!
This was a fantastic romance. Elle and Nix were great together, had amazing chemistry and were likable characters. The story was well written, well developed, humorous, heartfelt and entertaining. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!
I received an advance readers copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
The second they met, she was Nixed
Elle met Nix in an unforgettable encounter, the events which followed turned them into enemies Now years later, after she’s continuously called the cops on them for their partying ways, they are brought together in a charitable way neither could’ve ever expected
I absolutely loved Nix’s character purely because he was super funny and thoughtful, even though his life was complicatedElle and Nix as they uncover more about each other and their futures which are at stake, have to learn to overcome their past issues and hopefully work towards a future together It was also very interesting to see the different dynamics within the group, which makes this book a winner in my opinion.
Thank you to Maya for my advanced copy for which I leave my honest review and I look forward to Berk and his mystery letter girl’s story next and I also can’t wait to see what Maya has in store for LJ and Marisa
Enemies to lovers at its best. Loved Nix and Elle and their special relationship. An emotional roller coaster for both of these characters and lots of misconceptions. Love that they worked it all out in the end, but what a ride!! Another winner for this author. Highly recommend!!
These university themed stories by Maya Hughes just hit the spot when you want to visit your college years again. Nix and Elle weren’t a match at first sight. They definitely had to build up to a good finish many seconds after they met. But the build up was slow and steady which made it just right.
I enjoyed reading this book. I wasn’t sure if Elle and Nix were ever going to get along. I felt very bad about what Elle’s parents did to her. How Nix tried to please his dad. I didn’t want the book to end. I look forward to reading more from Maya.
I really, really, really loved the first book in this series, so I was very excited for this one. And this was one I could barely put down. But of course there were so many things going on when I got the chance to finally pick it up and read, that I had to. What I loved though, was that it took no time to dive right back into the story when I was able to get back to it. I enjoyed getting back to the characters I’d met and fell in love with in The Perfect First, and there were a few that I now am even more excited to hopefully see them get their own stories. I felt that Elle did totally overreact in a lot of the situations that happened, but it was definitely easy to see with her background experiences with other guys why she did that. But I like how Nix handled it. Her drama didn’t lead him to add more unnecessary drama, and to me, it was realistic how he handled each of her crazy times. His reactions to what normally would turn into the drama just for drama’s sake in a story are what made my wavering between 4.5 and 5 stars keep it bumped up to a full 5 stars. And I like that she would apologize when she realized she needed to. I’m really becoming a huge fan of this author, and as I mentioned before, can’t wait for more stories in this world. I’m especially excited to see Jules and Berk’s story in hopefully the next one!
This is the second book in the series but it can be read as a standalone. This time we have the quarterback Nix and Elle.
Elle first meets Nix when she accidentally walks in on him when he’s just out the shower and standing in front of her naked! She stumbles into his house thinking it’s her new student accommodation, but it isn’t and flees to her actual house across the street. She then became that annoying neighbor who calls the cops on him and his friends whenever there is party, his fault or not, creating firm enemy lines!
Nix has some damage control to do on his reputation due to being arrested at the last party his house hosted as end up being a volunteer helping Elle. The more time they spend together, truths about who they really are come out forcing them together and for Elle to change her mind on Nix.
Nix, this guy gave me major swoon. He’s funny, sweet, sexy, can cook and has a fit body to match. He isn’t your typical jock who’s big headed and a big ego to match. When he starts falling for Elle, he falls pretty hard. He’s a good guy and would do anything to help Elle.
Elle, I’ve not fully made my mind up about her. On one side, she’s fierce, hard working to the point I don’t think she sleeps and on the other side, she is so stubborn and uptight in her beliefs it was frustrating. So many times I wanted to tell Nix to walk away but the angst it created had me loving every minute of it.
I’ve read a few book by Hughes now and she always manages to pull all the feels out. Nix and Elle may have disliked each other in the beginning but towards the end they had an unmistakable bond. This series is just getting started and I can’t wait for the rest of the guys stories!

I really enjoyed Nix and Elle story.
The football qb who everyone loves and wabrpts to be near.
Elle the “goodies two shoes” who wants nothing to do with any athlete.
When these two come together there is chemistry but neither wants to believe it.
This enemies to lovers story is a great read. The witty banter between Nix and Elle will have you smiling. And the banter among the guys at the Brothel will make you laugh too.
The book will grab your attention and keep it.
If you’re a girl who ever judged herself because if your bad taste in men.
Or feel like someone us completely controlling your life, like Nix. You’ll relate.
I look forward to the next two books – Marissa and Jules.
I was given this book for an honest voluntary review
I received this free eARC novel from the author. This is my honest review.
Elle is one busy girl. She’s working, taking classes, doing homework, and doing 5,000 charity events. She only needs to do this until graduation, but she’s running on fumes. And don’t even get her started about her neighbor across the street…
Nix has the perfect life. Star quarterback, won the championship, getting ready to get drafted to anywhere of his pickings. What more could he want, right? Maybe to be someone more than a celebrity icon… And he’d like to get on better terms with his neighbor across the street…
The scenes between Nix and Elle will be a rollercoaster ride where both characters try to figure out their life their future, and their hearts. Both will have to find a way to trust one another in order to finally solve all of those mysteries.
I am so glad I stumbled into Maya Hughes novels. Ever since I read her first book, I’ve been hooked and she is an automatic author for me now. And I was so excited to get an eARC for this novel!
There are a lot of bumps in these two characters story and they are both so stubborn and hard headed. Seeing them struggle with their thoughts and feelings toward one another was refreshing and maddening, but very realistic.
Also they both had very big issues they were dealing with that I think a lot of readers will be able to understand. I know I did. To see both of them grow into their true selves was so rewarding, knowing they are going down the right path for themselves.
I’m also VERY excited for the next book! I can’t wait to see what those two characters will do together!
Fans of Hughes and this series and the new adult world will love this book! So glad I was able to read it and I’m already waiting for more by books by this author! 🙂
This is some clever writing. You get a lot from these honest characters because even when they make mistakes, they straight up own up to them. With Nix there is no deception. What you see is what you get and so much more in a good way. Caring and giving comes short to a description for him. With Elle there is a lot of mistrust but once her guard comes down she is selfless. A very mature woman with goals and completely dedicated to everything she sets her mind and heart into.
There is bickering and stubbornness to entertain through every chapter. They definitely took that saying about the thin line between love and hate to heart. A lot of cluelessness too. And there can be no complaint when besides getting their story, the author gives you tid bits about what’s to come with their friends. And let me tell you, you won’t want to wait for the next book. I’m impatiently waiting because just like Elle and Nix, Jules and Berk fit together in the most basic ways. One gives value to the other just by loving them, even when that person doesn’t believe in loving themselves.
