From a John W. Campbell Award–winning author: The original trilogy chronicling the military science fiction adventures of Nicholas Seafort. In a “splendid homage to the grand tradition of the old seafarer’s tale,” the Seafort Saga tells the story of an intergalactic captain’s journey through the galaxy (Roger MacBride Allen). Now, the first three installments of this epic series are available in … this epic series are available in one volume.
Midshipman’s Hope: The year is 2194. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Seafort is a fresh recruit with the United Nations Naval Service, serving as midshipman onboard the UNS Hibernia. En route to the colony of Hope Nation, the ship answers a distress call—only to lose the senior command staff in a daring rescue attempt. The chain of command has elevated Seafort into a leadership role he never anticipated. Surrounded by resentful and potentially mutinous officers, Seafort earns his stripes throughout Hibernia’s voyage, but his real trial awaits at Hope Nation with a startling revelation for humanity.
Challenger’s Hope: Capt. Nicholas Seafort was in command of the UNS Challenger until he was assigned to Adm. Geoffrey Tremaine’s task force. Removed from his flagship, Seafort has been given the smaller UNS Portia, transporting colonists to the world of Detour. But an alien attack devastates both ships, leaving dozens of crewmen and passengers dead. Only UNS Challenger is in good enough condition to bring the survivors home—provided Seafort can regain and retain his captaincy.
Prisoner’s Hope: Nicholas Seafort’s disastrous mission as captain of the UNS Challenger cost him nearly everything. The aliens responsible for decimating the United Nations Naval fleet are still a threat to the colony world of Hope Nation, whose inhabitants feel abandoned as the navy returns to Earth. To save the colonists, Seafort will have to sacrifice everything he has left and commit an act of high treason that could result in his death sentence.

Depressing stories about a depressed naval officer succeeding in spite of himself simply because the author said so.
Main character comes across as a psycho even tho he’s supposed to be this amazing hero.
Made it into book three and lost interest – fine if you believe grown men would allow themselves to be spanked.
Reread the first one, then had to finish the series.
This has been a great series and hated when it ended…I miss the characters!
Rather than a good space opera this series focuses on the masochistic main character and his punishment doled out to other characters. The protagonist is very unlikable and his inner anguish soon becomes distracting. It takes until the end of the second book to set him straight and note the obvious. Little here for fans of space opera.
Great character development although some of the plot twists were a little unlikely. I thoroughly enjoyed the set and look forward to reading the next one in the series.
Weak. Seems like a first try at writing and needs to very much improve. .99 cents was the right price.
Pros: Interesting picture of the future of naval forces in space. Very detailed account of how the day to day lives of people born into that Navy might live. The universe feels lived in.
Cons: VERY detailed account of how the day to day lives of people born into that Navy might live. I feel as though it slowed the pace of any plot to such a snails crawl that I eventually gave up on said plot.
I usually refrain from leaving negative reviews, but I just can’t believe this is a “boxed set” and some of the other reviews were what sold me on it. I have decided that some of those reviews must have been paid because they in no way resemble what I was reading.
Horatio Hornblower in outer space
A car wreck that you can’t look away from. You know you should walk away, but you find yourself compelled to stick out through the whole bloody thing.
Interesting at first. But the world and protagonist are ultimately very unpleasant and psychotic.
I’m in the middle of book two. It has really begun to drag. I almost always finish books once I start them, but I’m not sure about this one.
I am savings the last bookof this series as a treat! Enjoyed the two previous books and will give them a 5 Star review. Each book can stand on its own.
Great story line, wonderful characters,
In my opinion, the Seafort saga rivals OSC’s Ender books and the Hornblower books as a study of leadership development. It was very hard to put down.
Started a little slow but if you liked the Hornblower series you will most likely love these books.
Action but with strong characters – some broken. They are inspiring!
Interesting. Too much religion.
Fantastic space opera. Warning: You may not want to buy Book 4. It will wring your heart.
Have read them all 3 or 4 times and my son loved them as well. Incredibly realistic characters and very compelling sense of place/time.
