Our Review: The Sea Archer is a remarkable undertaking. The many diverse sub-plots are a credit not only to author Heckman’s talent for research but to the depths of her imagination. While the multiple Point of View characters might have some purist editors-reviewers shrinking in horror, overall the story works. And when Raven finally draws the proverbial line in the sand and reclaims her life, the reader experiences a hip-swinging, foot-stomping happy dance moments—and it’s worth the ride.
On a scale of 1-5, The Sea Archer deserves a 4.
Kat Henry Doran, Wild Women Reviews
I usually only read the occasional fantasy but this book was well written and the characters were strong and relatable. The story of Finn and Raven with Greek mythology rounded it out and made it very interesting along with the romance!
I’m not usually a fan of fiction, but this book had me interested the entire time. I couldn’t put the book down! It’s a perfect blend of romance, distress, happiness and fantasy. Jeny did a wonderful job of giving each character voice which makes it easy to identify with them. Raven and Finn’s relationship is one that will keep you on the edge of your seat as one moment you think nothing could go wrong, and the next personalities clash. The story of Raven is uplifting as she draws herself up from a troubled childhood to become the successful and strong woman she is. I could go on and on, but in summary, this book is all around fantastic. I can’t wait for the next one to see who they find!
This story is about Finn and Raven, two opposites from different worlds who might just very well be connected by a root in the mythical Greek Gods. I enjoy a story that takes real world and flavors it with the supernatural/mystical. The author blends a story of romance, healing and growth, and a wee bit of the paranormal. It was a fun read and had me wondering if these two were going to end up together. I appreciated the characters’ backstory and especially like Dee, Finn’s grandmother (I love layered secondary characters). The Hawaii setting was a joy to read about and I could definitely see that this author did her research. Makes me want to go on a vacation right now in the midst of a looong winter!
Fun fantasy with enjoyable characters, the picturesque backdrop of Hawaii and a blend of Greek mythology. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Billed as a fantasy romance based on Greek mythology, this book had far less fantasy and more reality than I expected. The bulk of the book is consumed by Raven and Finn’s on-again/off-again romance and their separate personal trials. Raven has the greatest growth arc in learning to stand on her own two feet. Finn has to learn he can’t always be in control in both his personal and professional lives. Both main characters are likeable, but my favorite is Finn’s mother Dee, who always made me smile. Although this book is the beginning of a series, the lovers’ story comes to a satisfying resolution even if the ending raises questions about the next book.
I loved that this book is set in Kauai, and so much of the action is saturated with Hawaiian culture and lifestyle. (I could see the beautiful sunsets.) And I appreciated that Finn’s mission involves saving endangered species. The author clearly has done her homework.
What gave me less satisfaction is that much of the drama between the lovers occurs because of misunderstandings between people who are too guarded or too proud to simply talk to each other. I wanted, expected, that more of the romance would turn on obstacles thrown up by the fantasy elements.
But what really limited my satisfaction were formatting and editing issues. First, I really wanted to submerge into the characters and scenery (What’s not to love about Hawaii and Greek gods?) but an issue with paragraphing kept me wondering on each page just who was speaking. Maybe it’s just a glitch in the Kindle version, but editing should have caught it. Second, the prologue: It’s too long and confusing and makes no sense until the relevant incidents happen in the story. Most of it, in fact, sets up the series rather than this one book. Third, there was a point at Chapter 18 where I stopped cold and had to re-read a chapter twice because something momentous happened and the characters’ expected reactions didn’t materialize. Possibly something was cut that shouldn’t have been. I was confused.
Overall, this book should satisfy those who love romances with rock stars, Seattle and Hawaiian locations, endangered species, and guest appearances by ancient Greek gods.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author in the hope I would leave my unbiased opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that…my opinions.
I am not usually a Fantasy reader, but am an avid Romance reader!!! This book was very fun to read! It has some great steamy moments but there is soooo much more to this book! I especially enjoyed that Raven is from the Seattle area (where I live!). I love the romance aspect of the story! Watching Raven discover who she is an entertainer/musician was a great journey. The relationship development between her and Finn kept me rushing through the entire book because they definitely have their ups and down and I kept wanting to get to their happily ever after. What a treat it was at the end of the book to see that they will continue being integral to the future books in the series. The saddest part of ending any good book is that I feel like I am losing a friendship when I will no longer get to be a part of their lives. But with this one I knew that even though this book was finished, I’d hear from them again!
For those of us that are a bit rusty on our greek mythology, this book works very hard to help jog our memory of whose who and how they fit into the challenge facing the Greek Gods and how that works with the relationship developing between Finn and Raven. A secondary bonus to this whole book was the fabulous character of Dee, Finn’s Grandma!!! Fingers crossed we’ll get to see more of her as well!!
I was always fascinated by Greek Mythology and I like the idea about creating stories on their descendants. I love that this is one of those books where the author creates a paranormal / real world where supernatural and mystical meet. The story is easy to read with wonderful characters. I love Dee just as much as Raven and Finn. Some of the scenes between the main characters Raven & Finn are steamy so that is an added bonus to this original romantic story.
