An untested teacher. A wealthy benefactor. When their attraction becomes undeniable, will they open their hearts to each other?
Colorado, 1910. Quinn Cooper can’t help feeling uneasy. But securing a job as a schoolmarm in a tiny frontier town was the only way to save her family from starvation back in Boston. And her nerves aren’t eased by a stray gunshot that spooks the sleigh horses, casting … the sleigh horses, casting her into the snow… until she’s rescued by a handsome stranger.
Lord Alexander Barnes knows better than to believe any pretty young woman would willingly become a mother to five children. But the lonely widower finds himself charmed by the lovely newcomer and her easy rapport with his offspring. And after his disgruntled nanny quits, his heart melts at the sight of her joyfully taking over the role.
Determined to prove herself in the schoolhouse and as a governess, Quinn fears her near-poverty will prevent any possible courtship with the affluent Englishman. And between their age difference and prejudicial violence in the town, Lord Barnes is certain this second chance at happiness just cannot be.
Will their love go unspoken, or will their persistence reward them with a lasting passion?
The School Mistress is the delightful first book in the Emerson Pass Historicals sweet romance series. If you like gallant nobles, resilient heroines, and hints of mystery, then you’ll adore Tess Thompson’s Edwardian adventure in the Old West.

made me laugh out loud sooo many times-loved it!
Good reading.
Very enjoyable read. Highly recommend it.
This is a lovely story with wonderful lead characters. If you would like to enjoy an uplifting read during the holidays and these difficult times, this is it. It is romantic, but also addresses some real life issues. One of the nicest books I have read in a long time. I have never read this author before, but will look for her books in the future.
Easy to read. Pleasant story.
Absolutely loved this book. Enjoyed every page. Author character development was great and she made you take interest in each character. Can’t wait for the next book in the series to be published. Will continue to follow this author. Highly recommend this bokk
I recommend The School Mistress as a clean, inspirational read.
Enjoyed reading and can’t wait to see what these characters do in their own lives in subsequent books.
Enjoyed the relatively clean story line. not graphic sex, just good characters and plot.
It was a sweet story. There were some sad parts in with a murder and child abuse. Life was and is never easy.
Perf
This book has so many levels to it and is a source of inspiration.
A Definite ‘Recommended’!
This story reminded me of the romances we used to read or the movies we watched when I was growing up. Remember the ‘fade to black’ or fading to a field of beautiful flowers or to a sunset scene?
It has the same feel to it and I just love this!
We have two very dynamic characters in Miss Quinn Cooper and Lord Alexander Barnes, a whole host of his young and very determined children (as well as some others in the school), an entire new town trying to make a go of it and a happy ever after ending too.
What’s not to love about this story when it kept yanking at my heartstrings?
I am definitely recommending this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning of another amazing series by Tess Thompson. This novel is set in 1910, with a young woman traveling from Boston to Colorado to take a position as a school mistress in a very small town called Emerson Pass. She meets the man who founded the town, a wealthy Lord from England who is now a single father to 5 young children. Ms. Thompson creates wonderful, full characters and immersive worlds, so putting her books down is very difficult! She deals with issues of racism, poverty, and other serious issues in a truthful, yet considerate manner. The other novels in this series will be written alternating with the past in one book, and the present in the next. I look forward to reading the next in the series. Thank you to the author and the publisher for the opportunity to review a complimentary copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I have to say that this is the best book I have read this year and i have read quite a lot of books.
A wonderful start to what promises to be another heartwarming, joy-bringing series by one of my favorite authors! Reminded me a bit of The Sound of Music and Little House on the Prairie, although set in a different place and time. I love the concept of the series, too, and look forward to reading more about the people of Emerson Pass!
I am so excited to start this series! I love that Tess Thompson has dipped into Historical Fiction! I also love that the series is set in the mountains of Colorado – an old stomping grounds of my family! The story was very enjoyable. Yes, there was the harshness of winter. Yes, there were some conflicts amongst some of the inhabitants of this newly formed ex-mining town. But there is love and Christmas celebrations, community events, and the excitement of a new school and teacher – just like you would expect in a story about a Colorado mountain town in the early 1900’s! As soon as I finished I bought the second book in the series!!! I am so excited to start this series! I love that Tess Thompson has dipped into Historical Fiction! I’m so very glad I read this turn of the century romance book. I used to read quite a few of them but hadn’t picked one up in a very long time. The School Mistress is Book 1 of Tess Thompson’s Emerson Pass Series and it is a sweet, heartwarming book.
Quinn Cooper is a beautiful young woman with an incredible desire to succeed and make something of herself. Although poor she was able to attend college and get her teaching certification. When the opportunity to teach in Emerson Pass presented herself she left her sick mother and younger sister and trekked across the country to become the new school mistress of Lord Barnes‘ new school.
Alexander – Lord Barnes is a British Aristocrat who moved to the new country to make something for himself. He rebuilt the town of Emerson Pass brick by brick and is determined to educate every man, woman and child who desires an education. He is a kind and loving man, with 5 beautiful children. When Miss Cooper arrives, Lord Barnes is smitten and for the first time since his wife’s passing, he see’s himself courting a woman and taking a wife.
Watching Alexander and Quinn fall in love and work together to make Emerson Pass a safe and beautiful place to live made this clean romance a fantastic five star read. I look forward to reading the other books in the series as they come out, including contemporary romance stories and highly recommend you take the time to read and enjoy this book.
The first book in Tess Thompson’s new series is a lovely, heartwarming historical romance. I highly recommend it!
