Don’t miss the hot new romantic comedy follow-up to the smash hit The Charmer… Tyler Jacobson has a plan for everything–except how to handle his completely annoying, utterly frustrating, and totally sexy upstairs neighbor. He couldn’t care less if Everly Ribinski thinks he’s equally irritating–until he discovers she’s the only one who can help him land a business deal that will finally make … deal that will finally make him feel like he’s more than just a guy from the wrong side of the tracks.
Color him shocked when Everly refuses to help, insisting she should have run him over in the parking garage when she had the chance. Harsh. But possibly deserved. Tyler may have spent the last few months reveling in annoying the fiery gallery owner with a dark past, but he’s got secret leverage she can’t refuse.
If only they could stop trying to one-up each other long enough to realize the pranks are nothing more than foreplay. Of course, he figures it out quicker. He’s smart like that. Too bad Everly wants nothing to do with him. Or does she? Wait. What is she up to now?
For a man who’s always scheming, the best-laid plans never felt so good falling apart…

3.75 stars–THE SCHEMER is the third instalment in Avery Flynn’s contemporary, adult HARBOR CITY romance series. This is real estate developer Tyler Jacobson, and art curator Everly Ribinski’s story line. THE SCHEMER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Tyler Jacobson is the one-time best friend and nemesis of Sawyer Carlyle-THE NEGOTIATOR.
Told from several third person perspectives including Tyler and Everly THE SCHEMER follows the acrimonious relationship between real-estate developer Tyler Jacobson, and art curator Everly Ribinski. Everly has just moved into an upscale apartment to be closer to her beloved grandmother- Nunni-a woman suffering from age on-set dementia; and within steps of her up and coming Black Heart Art Gallery. Meeting Tyler Jacobson, a fellow tenant, finds our heroine on the receiving end of a seduction she had never intended to carry through. What ensues is the back and forth, one on one, face to face confrontations that pull together two people from the wrong side of town who have made it big in the world of high finance, art and real estate development; and the potential fall out as Tyler struggles with the connections to his past, and the social class where he feels he no longer belongs.
Throughout the story line the reader becomes a little more familiar with the fall-out between Tyler Jacobson and Sawyer Carlyle as Tyler’s ex-fiance renews a smear campaign against the man she destroyed years before. Everly refuses to allow Irena to continue her attacks against the man with whom she (Everly) is falling in love but sometimes remaining calm is the best defense against an embittered offense. Tyler carries a self-imposed burden and chip on his shoulder that tends to control everything in his life.
Everly and Tyler’s relationship is a series of sexually palpable confrontations; a one-upmanship of he said/she said sarcastic comments, grounded in a mutual attraction that is pushed ahead by a well-meaning but manipulating woman who wishes to see all of her children find their happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate, seductive, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a side story developing between socialite Helene Carlyle (Tyler and Hudson’s mother) and Italian hotel magnate Alberto Ferranti. Helene never expected to find another love following the death of her beloved husband Michael but meeting Alberto Ferranti stirred something within the Carlyle matriarch-something she long thought buried and gone.
We are introduced to Everly’s best friend and caterer Kiki; Tyler’s ex-fiance Irena; and Alberto’s son Carlo Ferranti. I have not had the chance to read Hudson’s story (The Charmer book two) but I am looking forward to, one day, catching up with Sawyer’s brother.
THE SCHEMER is an intoxicating tale of as one man struggles to move on from his past, and one woman battles between her head and her heart. The premise is playful and edgy; the characters are colorful and impulsive; the romance is spirited and determined.
Tyler, Owner/manager of the building where Everly lives and works! Tyler has a run in with gallery owner Everly and needless to say he does not make a good first impression, he is not his best when suffering from jet lag ….he decides to try make it up to her by making brownies ..she calls the fire department lol . This is another fast paced fun HOT read by Avery ! As always there is a great core group AND extras lol. come along on the twisty ride that is their story . You will enjoy !
My favorite thing about enemies to lovers is the passion behind all that hate. Tyler and Everly had a ton of passion and chemistry. From the burning of every meal by Tyler and nearly setting the building on fire to the constant barbs traded back and forth, this book had me laughing constantly.
Tyler has been trying to shed his wrong side of the tracks image since he was a scholarship student at a fancy prep school. Everly can’t stand people like Tyler, who only care about the image, and has no problem telling him just what she thinks. I loved that despite what seemed like differences, Tyler and Everly were so similar and seemed to bring out the best in each other.
I haven’t read the first two books in the Harbor City series but the glimpses of the characters from those books in The Schemer make me want to know more about Sawyer and Hudson Carlyle.
It’s been awhile since I read a romcom with such heart and this one is fun and flirty with a whole lot of sexy.
Avery Flynn combines a load of steaminess with super fun banter. The main characters are relatable and endearing. Tyler is a man with purpose who wants to move up in the business world. But the hurt he’s gone through never went away with every successful endeavour he’s had. Everly should know, she’s had the same life experiences. Both are stubborn yet the heat and attraction between them is combustible.
The Schemer is an excellent read and very engrossing. It grips you because amidst the banter are two people who just wanted the safety of being completely accepted and loved.
What an enormously entertaining story. It’s filled with snarky humor, unwanted smoldering desires, unintentional secrets, and oh my persistence, unrelenting persistence. She’s from the wrong side of town and has worked to get where she is with no pretense of being anything else. He’s also from the wrong side of town and through hard work has everything you could ever want, but he’s sworn he’ll never let where’s he’s from bring him down. Two very conflicting views, one accepting her background, the other making themselves over to keep his as far away as possible from where he started. How can they ever have a chance for a meaningful relationship, when all they see in common, even though they don’t want to admit it, is their unwanted desires for each other. That’s it, for I hate spoilers; but I hope I’ve tickled your fancy, cause this is one terrific story. Terrific from their comical beginnings, all the way through their passionate ending.
Tyler is a millionaire businessman who grew up on the wrong side of town has been trying to show people he’s not exactly who they think he is.
Everly is also from the wrong side of town but is proud of where she comes from. She owns an art gallery in the apartment building in which she lives and has also become Tyler’s least favorite person.
I’ve been waiting for Tyler’s story as you know from the previous books, he does not like the woman who lives above him. Everly and Tyler have a love/hate relationship. But when Everly meets Tyler’s ex-fiance, things change between the two of them. I enjoyed the banter between Everly and Tyler and I loved that they were both in denial about falling in love.
However, I felt that there were too many other storylines going on in this book at the same time and I really didn’t see why that had to happen. If you’ve read the first two books, you will know what’s going on but if you haven’t, you’re going to be at a total loss. While Everly and Tyler are the focus of the story, you also have Tyler’s ex, Helene and Alberto, Helene’s kids…which is just too much.
I had high hopes for The Schemer but it fell a little short for me.
Tyler Jacobson is a dedicated business man that always has a crafty plan up his sleeve, he is relentless when it comes to landing big deals, and making his clients happy, and he never loses at anything! So when he learns that his annoying, and devastatingly gorgeous, new neighbor happens to know a man that he has been dying to get five minutes with, he knows he needs to make amends with her and sweet talk her into helping him get his five minutes. Problem is since the day she moved into his building, they have been at war with one another over everything and there is a good possibility that he might have already burned all his bridges with her…
Everly Ribinski has never met a man as irritating as her hunky new neighbor Tyler Jacobson, from day one of living in the building he has been testing her patience, with his failed attempts at cooking and stealing her beloved parking spot. Then he has the audacity to wander into her gallery and try to hijack her time with her client, and all be danged if she is going to let him mess up her relationship with him, just for one of his business deals. Then he surprises her and asks her to accompany him on a lunch date with to her clients house so he can schmooze her friend, and in exchange he offers to lighten her load a little and help her out with something she has been wanting to do for a while now. Now she is left wondering if she has just made a deal with the devil, or if this deal could give her everything she has been wanting?
From the very first page of The Schemer you will be lured in by it’s hilarious dialogue, these two were quite the pairing, from the moment they met the sparks were present, and so was the heat fueled irritation, and every word they uttered was literary gold!! These two well crafted characters wandered onto to the page, the neighborly war ensued, the giggles took hold, and I couldn’t help but want to stick around and see how it would all play out! This was such a pleasurable read, not only did it have the trademark steam that I have become accustom to with this author, but it also had emotional depth to inspire the feels, humor to spawn the giggles and a few touching sweet moments mixed in here and there to warm the heart… it was nice a well rounded read! Highly recommend this one, the moment you crack the cover and meet these two you’re destined to be hooked!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.
The Schemer is the third book in the Harbor City Series and while it’s not my favorite it is overall a pretty good read. This is an enemies to lovers story that has lots of witty banter between Tyler and his obnoxious neighbor Everly. Tyler has reinvented himself but Everly is proud of her rough past. Tyler is always reaching for more and now he wants Everly’s help. No. Freakin. Way. It’s fun to watch these two fight the growing attraction between them. The book is well written and we definitely get to know these characters very well. I just didn’t feel the connection between Everly and Tyler. That could just be me though. Overall it’s a well done book and I would recommend it.
I loved this charming enemies to lovers romance. We first met Tyler Jacobson in the book one, The Negotiator. He was heartbroken and felt betrayed by his best friend, Sawyer Carlyle, when Tyler’s fiance tried to sleep with Sawyer just before their wedding. Tyler has since reconciled with Sawyer and moved on. He is working hard to leave his ‘scholarship kid’ identity behind and prove that he is not like his abusive parents. Tyler has a meet cute in his building with sexy art gallery owner, Everly Ribinski. Everly is also from the ‘other side of the tracks’ but unlike Tyler she is proud of it. Tyler loves her sassy mouth and her ability to stand up and out maneuver him. They got off to a rough start and whenever one tried to apologize, the miscommunication was entertaining. Their fighting was their foreplay and their chemistry was explosive. Everly saw the fun, charming, intelligent man he truly was. If only she could make him believe he was better than the high society, emotionless schemer he put forth. There were so many laugh out loud moments but many sweet and heartwarming moments as well, not to mention their fiery passion! This is the perfect blend of humor, charm, emotion and steam. It captured my heart and had me totally engaged from start to finish. I also loved the plot twist with Helena Carlyle, it was so sweet. I definitely recommend this must read romance!
Tyler Jacobson always has a plan. He’s worked hard to leave his working class past behind and climb his way up the social ladder to become a successful businessman as well as be a part of the social elite. He’s a pro at reading and manipulating people to get the outcome he wants . . . until he meets his new neighbor Everly Ribinski. She may be gorgeous and sexy, but he finds her as irritating as she finds him . . . and, besides, she’s not the kind of woman he needs to cement his place in society.
Everly Ribinski may be from a working class neighborhood, but she has worked hard to get where she is and she’s darn proud of it. Family and friends mean everything to her and she loves and defends those closest to her fiercely. Tyler Jacobson is neither friend nor family. He’s really everything in a man she’s always been warned against her entire life . . . .someone pretending to be something he isn’t. So, when he needs help to seal the deal on a business opportunity with her mentor, she’s not a willing participant.
They’ve been annoying and irritating each other for months now, but it’s kind of been like foreplay and now the sparks are flying even if their endgames are not the same. They are definitely not each other’s types . . .so why do they seem to want to be around each other so much? Good thing they are only hanging out while things stay fun, right?
The Schemer was my first Avery Flynn book and I have to say I loved it! These characters were really complex. While both Everly and Tyler came from working class neighborhoods, they’ve both taken their lives in truly opposite directions. Tyler hides his past completely while Everly is proud of what she has accomplished and doesn’t care if society looks down on her roots. Together, this couple is magic. They are both such strong individuals but also have their kryptonite. They fulfill a need in one another if they can only give in to it.
While Everly and Tyler’s relationship is developing, so is Helene Carlyle and Alberto Ferranti’s. Helene is the queen of Harbor City society and Alberto Ferranti is an Italian hotel magnate. Both widows, Alberto uses his romantic view of the world to convince Helene that it’s okay to move on and love again when she is ready too. These two individuals are also an opposites attract love story that really stole the show in many ways . . . I loved this subplot so much!
This book has great banter between characters, smoking hot scenes, a scheming ex fiance, and some very stubborn characters. It makes for a fantastic story that keeps readers entertained and on their toes as you are hoping that not only one, but two couples find their happy ever afters. 4.5 stars!
4.5 Stars for The Schemer by Avery Flynn
This is Book three in the Harbor City Series and this is Tyler Jacobsen and Everly Ribinski’s story and right from the start sparks fly. Tyler is rich now but that wasn’t always the way and he struggles to put his background behind him and accept how people see him now, Everly is also from the “other side of the track” but the difference is she is proud of who she is and what she has achieved. Tyler is Everly’s new landlord but it’s not just him to holds the key to her future, could her new landlord also become her new man….
This is a fun read with plenty of friendly banter going on between all the characters, it has some sweet moments as well as some seriously hot scenes. If you are looking for a book that makes you giggle this could be the book for you. Looking forward to more from Avery Flynn
“Just as soon as her brain returned from its trip to Lustopia, the realization that she’d just f***** her landlord and quasi-nemesis on the trunk of her car hit her with a force of a Mack truck sliding on a sheet of ice and slamming into a wall made out of marshmallows.”
Having read and loved the two previous books in the Harbor City series (The Negotiator & The Charmer), author Avery Flynn had her work cut out for her in redeeming douche canoe Tyler Jacobson. Ok, maybe that’s just my opinion, but I did not care for him in the other stories (I may have fantasized about running him over with my car) and was a wee bit hesitant in reading The Schemer when I saw he was going to be the hero. But as much as I despised him, Miss Flynn proved that perception is not always reality—Everyone deserves a second chance.
Tyler and Everly’s story is one of two sides of the same coin…and when that coin is flipped, anything goes! And book peeps, I mean ANYTHING!
This series is one to put on your must read list! Highly recommend!

Tyler Jacobson was a scholarship kid and hasn’t forgotten that; even though he’s a millionaire now. He has trouble convincing himself that he fits in with the Harbor City elite so he does everything he can to prove himself. Like hiring a speech therapist to get rid of his accent, not talking about where he came from and scheming to get the best contracts from the best companies to prove himself.
Everly Ribinski is a art gallery owner who also comes from the wrong side of the tracks and embraces her heritage and past that makes her who she is today. She is also Tyler’s upstairs neighbor, his tenant and the bain of Tyler’s existence.
This is a good enemies to lovers romance and lots of fun! The angst that goes on between these two kept me smiling all the way through but, I found myself wishing there was a little more of a spark between them. I have read the other two books in this series which were great but this story kind of fell short for me.
Winning is Everything…..
This is the second book I have read by Avery and the latest installment in her series with The Negotiator and The Charmer (which I was lucky to read!)
This book was fantastic! It was everything a romantic comedy should be!
Everly, oh Everly! If I ever decide to grow up, I want to be just like her! She is independent, she is fierce (Could give Sasha a run for her money!) she takes no prisoners and yet she wears her heart on her sleeve. Because of some bad history has some vulnerability which is totally understandable! She is so strong when she has to be, but needs a soft place to fall.
Tyler is the schemer, he tries so hard to rise above his upbringing that he fails to see what is right in front of him. He has been burned bad in his past and unfortunately it dictates his future dealings. He need someone like Everly to keep him guessing and see that your past doesn’t have to control your future.
The chemistry between Everly and Tyler is amazing and so, so hot! Even when Tyler puts his foot in his mouth (which he does repeatedly) Everly calls him on his crap every time and that what is needed!
I am so glad I was able to read another fantastic story by Avery! Thank you for your words and cannot wait to read more from you!
