Travis McGee is too busy with his houseboat to pay attention to the little old man with the missing postage stamps. Except these are no ordinary stamps. They are rare stamps. Four hundred thousand dollars worth of rare. And if McGee doesn’t recognize their value, perhaps Mary Alice McDermit does, a six-foot knockout who knows all the ways to a boat bum’s heart. Only it’s not McGee’s heart that’s … that’s in danger. Because a syndicate killer has put a contract on McGee. A killer who knows something about stamps . . . and even more about McGee.

Another great Travis McGee book
I had to see what Travis McGee was up to. Read all the McGee books years ago and now I’m reading them again. It’s funny how you’re perception of a book can change after a few decades. I still find the McGee novels exciting and fast-paced. But now, in the throes of old age, I see that the novels were not written just for entertainment, they were trying to tell us something about ourselves. How we were going down the wrong road with our extreme commercialism, our disregard for the environment, and a host of other things. John D. MacDonald wrote of those things 50 to 60 years ago. And guess what? He nailed it.
One of the better Travis McGee books
Love John D. MacDonald’s writing style. I find his protagonist, Travis McGee to be engaging and endearing. The plots of all books in the series are real page turners. I read the entire series in the 70’s and have reread them a couple of times since. It’s like revisiting an old friend.
What can be said that someone else hasn’t already said (probably better) about JDM in general and the Travis McGee series in particular. Still the benchmark.
John D. MacDonald’s character in his series of books, Travis McGee, is a “recoverer” whose mission is to sometimes recover people. This time he’s recovering a collection of rare — and high value — stamps. Unlike his others, this book dragged a bit and had several logy, slow to no spots. Good book but not his best.
John D MacDonald never wrote a bad Travis McGee Story!!
Bring back Travis !!!!
One of the best authors of all times.
One of the if no THe Best
This author never falls short. Always great, suspenseful reading.
Was not as riveting and funny as the dozens of Travis McGee books I read in the 70’s – 80’s. I’m not a stamp collector so perhaps I just didn’t “get into” Trav’s salvage this go ’round. Besides, it was more Meyer’s go round than Trav’s!
Typical Travis MaGee story.
A typical, and attention grabbing John D.
Travis McGee, my idol. J D MacDonald, my favorite author.
Not the typical Travis McGee novel – too much philosiphy
Great read.
It doesn’t get better than one of your favorite authors and characters.
McDonald never disappoints. I read this book YEARS ago, and still was on the edge of my seat.
Haven’t read a Travis Magee novel in years. Lots of fun. McDonald and Travis were quite the team.
