J R ward has done it again. I love anything she puts her pen to that is how great a writer she is. I recommend any of the Black dagger brotherhood books they are the best in the genre. if you are looking for a set of books that you will never want to put down then these books are for you. two vampires and a shadow find themselves fighting a twisted cult leader ( also a vampire) as well as a drug-dealing vamp. trust me it’s good. if you like vampires and love romance pick up the series start with dark lover and You will be hooked.
It felt like coming home. I miss the characters when I’m waiting for the next in series. Love the characters, love the story–can’t wait for more. Thank you JR for never disappointing the fans and inspiring other authors.
J. R. Ward is the gold standard for Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Her books never disappoint. This one is no exception. Enter the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and you won’t be satisfied until you’ve read every one!
Great book. You can’t help but root for Murhder.
Excellent book by JR Ward. Read the entire series starting with Dark Lover! Black Dagger Brotherhood. Her original vampire creation!
Love the brotherhood
Holy cow! Awesome addition to the black dagger brotherhood!
I’ve waited for this story since The Thief when we got a glimpse of a destroyed Murhder at his B&B in South Carolina. He has the distinction of being the only member of the Brotherhood to be expelled. Over 20 years ago, he left Caldwell a broken and damaged man after having taking revenge on some really bad people who brought harm to a pregnant woman who still haunts him. Wrath declared him insane and kicked him out. He’s headed back now as that woman has asked for his help in finding her son. Meanwhile, Sarah Caldwell, a researcher for a biotech lab, has discovered some disturbing information about her company and her covert investigation has her crossing paths with Murhder.
As with every one of these books, there’s a lot going on. Rather than go into detail, I’ll give them a brief mention. Throe moves forward with his diabolical plan, which has entangled John Matthew in a terrible way and he’s resigned to a fate only he’s aware of. There are some strange shadows that pose critical danger to the vampire community.
But the heart of the story is all Murhder as we’re given so much insight from his point of view. He’s a complicated man who’s been disconnected for two decades. His relationship with Sarah was a lifeline, for both of them. It was lovely being a part of their discovery and his reawakening. I like seeing a misunderstood character triumph, not necessarily in others’ eyes but his own and I was rooting for him like I had some investment in the outcome. I guess I did because the author took me there.
Another unexpected aspect was Murhder’s developing relationship with John Matthew. I’d forgotten that Darius was his best friend and he was unaware of his death. Since Darius was killed in the opening chapter of the first book in this series, it was a real gift to learn more about the man who fathered John Matthew and built the enclave for the Brotherhood.
I really enjoyed this story and can’t ever imagine not hearing Jim Frangione narrate the story. The time just melts away as I’m transported into this world that’s like catnip for me. I’m now team Murhder and I loved the ending. And, this was a kinder, gentler Brotherhood and I think that was to give way to this man. Nicely done! 4.5 stars
(Thanks to Simon & Schuster Audio for my complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.)
I am currently reading this book and just like all of the BDB series, I love it!
Loved this book!
I felt like this took us back to the first few books in the series and it was like traveling home. The flood of emotions that JR can intertwine into her novels is incredible and borders on magic. Thanks to the Warden for another fantastic book!
5 old school BDB stars!
I’m a huge fan of all things BDB but it’s been a while since a book from this series has thrilled me as much as this one. Combing the stories of two characters that I have been desperate for more of, Murhder’s story is seamlessly combined with a revisit to one of my faves, John Matthew, and we get an exciting, dramatic, heartbreaking and uplifting read with a steamy, passionate romance, and I loved every single moment of it!
Murhder is known as the only warrior ever to be expelled from the Black Dagger Brotherhood – a decision taken on account of his insanity. We’ve heard rumours and seen glimpses, but now we finally get his story and I loved getting to know him!
“Jeez, you go rogue once and slaughter a bunch of humans after they torture your girlfriend, and suddenly you’re a leper.”
There is so much more to Murhder than we knew, and though he does struggle with his mind, he is also driven by vengeance against a scientific laboratory that is conducting horrific experiments on vampires, specifically a female and her young that he is determined to rescue.
Dr Sarah Watkins works for that very medical research lab. Her fiancé also worked there up until his death two years previously, and when the FBI start to question his death, she starts to dig and she discovers nefarious goings on which horrify her. Desperate to find out the truth, she goes hunting for answers – bringing her right into the path of Murhder.
It’s a swift introduction into the supernatural world for Sarah, but she is drawn in quickly and puts her skills to use by assisting one of the Brotherhood’s own. But it’s the big, broody male that is all fiercely protective over her that she can’t help but be drawn to.
Murhder experiences a peace with Sarah that he has never felt before. And recognising her as somebody of significance to his life, he follows his heart (and the rest of his body) to claim the woman that he knows is his.
It’s hot, steamy and fast moving, but it’s full of emotion as Murhder and Sarah find their way to each other, and it is beautiful to watch. I loved Murhder as a character – so misunderstood but such an amazing guy! He’s totally badass, but also sweet and romantic, and I loved seeing two people that have lost so much get the something special that they deserve.
“I fought for us. I am a warrior, and I fought for us.”
But not only do they come from two very different worlds, but Murhder’s future is completely up in the air. Will be return to his life of solitude, or is it possible for him to reclaim his place amongst his brothers? And how does Sarah fit in to that?
Perfectly unfolding alongside Murhder and Sarah’s story, we get to revisit with John Matthew. The silent warrior that we have followed since before his transition, we have watched him grow and train to become the badass he is. We’ve watched him discover a family, grieve the loss of loved ones, find a home, his place, and his mate, and now he is on the cusp of losing it all. It’s a heartwrenching storyline that truly brings the emotion and reminds us of what a huge part of the series he is. And is it weird that I cried when his story reached its big moment? You know what, who freakin’ cares? It’s a moment I’ve been waiting for, and I felt all the feels right along with him, I cheered and fist-pumped and I had happy tears streaming down my face.
A special treat was seeing John Matthew’s dynamic with Murhder. The two of them develop a wonderful bond, and I loved watching them together! And when you add the rest of the Brothers (and Lassiter) into the mix – pure gold.
I loved this book so much. It’s classic BDB with a wonderful story, great series progression, and a sense of intrigue as a new danger emerges. I’m excited to see whatever is coming next.
5 stars!
This newest installment from JR Ward is a must read. I’m eagerly awaiting the next book.
I’m an unabashed Black Dagger Brotherhood Fan. J.R. Ward has created a series full of vampires that are unique. There’s no “turning humans,” that’s a myth in the BDB world. The vampires have a separate existence while still living around humans.
The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a group of warriors who work to keep the vampire population safe. It’s not the humans that they fight, it’s the Lessers, fighters created from humans by the evil Omega. The Omega removes the hearts of humans, replaces the blood in the body with black sludge made of his essence, and turns them loose to kill the vampires.
The Savior is the latest in the long line of 17 novels. Centered on Murhder, a BDB warrior who left the group, forsaking his promise to protect the community. He had lost a lot of things in his life, including the woman he loved, and went insane. He was the only member of the BDB in history to be kicked out of the group.
Murhder wants to come back and the members of the BDB aren’t happy about it. Murhder works to clear his name from the events that surrounded his break. While working through it, he finds Dr. Sarah Watkins who was working at the laboratory where much of the story’s background takes place.-
Within the story, there’s a couple of alternate storylines that center on a couple of my favorite characters. No, not going to spoil it for you, but they made me feel good by the end of the book.
If you’re new to the Black Dagger Brother series, pick up Dark Lover, the first of the series. While each book can stand alone, it’s best read in order to get the full story arcs.
And, if you find yourself loving the story, there is spin off series, Black Dagger Legacy, that follows the trainees vying to join the BDB and a couple of great novellas as well.
I love J R Ward. The Brotherhood Series is one of my favorites. Yes, some of the books were not as outstanding as others but overall she’s a great writer. In this story, questions are answered on the Murdher and Xhex saga. A new evil is released for the brotherhood to battle and we await the next book…
Anytime I get to revisit the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood I’m a happy girl. I will always read the books of this series and eagerly anticipate each new addition. This book didn’t disappoint. This story is about Murhder and we learn all about his reasons for the his breakdown and actions that caused him to be drummed out of the brotherhood. We also got to know more about Xhex, one of the best strong kickass female characters in any fictional world out there. There’s always a lot of darkness in these books and it serves to highlight the humor and happy times with the people we have grown to love. Murhder gets his happy ending and I enjoyed it “watching” it happen.
J.R. Ward is an exquisite writer. None of her books have disappointed me. The Savior is an emotional page-turner that you can’t put down. The BDB series is the best series ever written!
I absolutely loved Murhder and he’s earned a spot among by favorite Brothers. Sarah has a curious scientist’s brain and a kind, gentle heart. This pair were perfect for one another. I also loved the story arc for John Matthew. The ending alone earned five stars for wringing so much emotion out of me in only fifty pages. So much happens in this book, you won’t want to miss it. Awesome read!
J R Ward did it again! Her books never fail. She keeps me engaged from the first to the last page.
Who doesn’t love the tortured souls of the Black Dagger Brotherhood? JR Ward creates compelling characters in a voice that’s second-to-none. Gritty, sensual, and thought-provoking are only a few words to describe her work. I highly recommend this series!
Well, it’s no secret that I one-click the heck out of the BDB books, and I’ve really been looking forward to Murhder’s story. I mean, come on – any book that can use the ad copy “the wait for this book has been Murhder” is a must-buy, right?
RIGHT. I loved this installment. SImple as that. The characters were terrific, the extra layer of backstory was great, the writing was impeccable as always…and late in the book, there is a truly brilliant plot twist that ties into one of J. R. Ward’s other series. It’s truly a stroke of genius, and you’ll love it when you find it!
Five fangirl stars with heart eyes!
