After the death of her mother, New York surgeon Alexandra travels to New Orleans to face the secrets and tragedies of her youth. A mystery is solved leading to a journey to madness.
I gave it a good because of the cliffhanger ending. The difficult topic of abuse was dealt with in sensitive but imaginative ways. I started into the story a bit dubious, but then became totally engaged with the main character.
This was such a great read! I couldn’t even imagine how an author could pull off such a change in the heroine and make it even slightly believable. But Jenkins hits it out of the park!!! Beautiful handling of very difficult subject matter, compelling plot and great writing. Will be reading more Jenkins ASAP!!
Alexandra is a brain surgeon in New York… talented, but somewhat unstable. Her employer furnishes her with a personal assistant. Alexandra is incapable of taking care of herself, bathing, dressing, eating and getting anywhere on time.
When her mother dies, Alexandra travels to New Orleans, and faces the secrets of her youth. She must grapple …
The main character miraculously cures herself to become responsible and
‘normal’ after 40 years of being autistic. Not believable. Well written, good overall plot.
I enjoyed this tale of a twisted Doctor. The author did a wonderful job of setting the scene and then developing it. Well done and well deserving of 5 stars!
Enjoyed this book with the doctor having gone through horrendous childhood and survives with great surgery skills for the brain even though she had mental challenges
I was/am ambivalent about a rating on this book. It was different, definite “what is going to happen next” and not wanting to put the book down. At the same time, it felt somewhat unrealistic to me. It is a hard one to describe but I certainly did not want to stop reading it in spite of that.
Liked book, but I found main character’s rapid change in personality, social behavior, from needing help with just about everything except surgery to being self-sufficient, organized, able to care for others … all a bit much to swallow.

Absolutely loved this book ! Kath
Story-line has so many ways to go that are left undeveloped. The ending twist is outstanding.
Not too realistic but a good read
surprising—-great characters—-leaves you thinking about the characters and hoping for more acceptance in self for differences Thought provoking
Odd but kept my interest

Troubling. Is she a comitted mom, or just another monster? Spooky in the extreme.
Easy read and different from anything I’ve read before
Interesting book although the end bothered me.
Dark and twisted
Not my type of read

Unpredictable ending…. very good
