From the USA Today bestselling author of the Hope River series comes a new contemporary midwife novel.Say “goodbye” to your old life, and “hello” to the life you’ve been waiting for… babies she delivers come safely into the world.
But when Clara’s life takes a nosedive, she realizes she hasn’t been tending to her own needs and does something drastic: she runs away and starts over again in a place where no one knows her or the mess she’s left behind in West Virginia. Heading to Sea Gull Island—a tiny, remote Canadian island—Clara is ready for anything. Well, almost. She left her passport back home, and the only way she can enter Canada is by hitching a ride on a snowmobile and illegally crossing the border.
Deciding to reinvent herself, Clara takes a new identity—Sara Livingston, a writer seeking solitude. But there’s no avoiding the outside world. The residents are friendly, and draw “Sara” into their lives and confidences. She volunteers at the local medical clinic, using her midwifery skills, and forms a tentative relationship with a local police officer.
But what will happen if she lets down her guard and reveals the real reason why she left her old life? One lesson soon becomes clear: no matter how far you run, you can never really hide from your past.

Patricia Harman writes good books about the medical community from a personal point of view. This book is fiction, mostly believeable, and a good entertaining story.
This is the third book in this series by Patricia Harmon. One could easily relate to the main character, as she decides, after many upsetting life events, decides to runaway.
The story leads you in directions you do not expect. Interesting twits and turns. Nice character development too. Would recommend.
I enjoyed the descriptions of the island coast and Lake Erie and of the birds. The story was very human.
I liked the authors first two books better, but I enjoyed this one.
Nice easy read! Nice changes in plot so you don’t know exactly what is going to happen next.
Great historical fiction
This was truly a book that I couldn’t stop reading and one that I didn’t want to end! The characters were so beautifully written and the story evolved so naturally that I was instantly hooked. I’ve read all this authors’ books and enjoyed each and every one!
One of the best books I’ve read in awhile. Original plot line. Good character development. A Lille bit quirky.
Interesting and unusual.
This starts out slow and I had conflicting feelings about the main character; however, I persisted to the end and I was glad I did. The ending was very worthwhile, almost like real life!
I like this book (not finished yet), and it’s interesting in kind of an odd way because there isn’t really much happening. The beginning pulled me into the book, and I keep reading to see how that beginning is resolved, I guess. Characters are okay, not fantastic – in places reads like someone’s journal. I’m just barely over half-way through. Will leave final judgement for the end.
This book is for everyone who has ever thought about running away and never had the courage. The location sounds so peaceful and nice. I daydream about that kind of isolation wondering if I could be happy. I found it to be entertaining which is all I ask for when I read!
I enjoyed this book–a good story with nuggets of wisdom that I still think about.
Loved it
Very good book!
I always love books where someone is leaving everything behind and making a new life for themselves!
Life is challenging, both being born and dying. This is a real life, very readable book that moves heart and soul.
Loved it. I wanted it to go on.
