When it comes to post apocalyptic fiction it’s usually guns blazing. Extinction New Zealand : Rule of Three is more a survival and horror than running and gunning. A breath of fresh air.
I enjoy the Kindle world books because they give me a chance to get more information on it from the perspective of others. In this case, it is the Extinction Cycle and a world away from the action in America. Because it is based in New Zealand you have a totally different terrain to navigate, and it is described fairly well so you have a good idea of what you are dealing with. The characters are a little thin as far as their personalities and backgrounds, though we know more about the couple being highlighted.
Jack Gee is hiking in the New Zealand mountains completely unaware of what is happening around the world as the virus comes closer to home. When he receives a desperate call from his wife begging him to return home, he drops everything and starts for home. But he is sidetracked along the way as he is captured and must plot an escape that could cost him.
Dee Gee is trapped in her home in Hamilton. She has barricaded herself in the basement and found a way to mask herself from the Variants. When she sees a group running from the creatures she decides to invite them into her space even though her supplies are limited. When the food finally starts to run out and Jack still has not shown up Dee realizes she will have to leave the basement with only her Katana for protection. She hopes for safety and if luck smiles on her she will find her husband as well.
This turns out to be a three-part series so you have more time to learn about all the surviving characters. There are multiple pop culture references as well as movie references. I also see parallels to several other zombie shows, books and movies, not that it is a bad thing but I noticed. This is well worth the read and I am interested in how the complete story plays out.
Warning
Definitely not for the faint of heart. There is violence, and death and . . . potential violations.
It’s a worthy addition to Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s Extinction Cycle series. The action, once it starts, is almost non-stop.
It may be hard to read, or confusing with the measurements, just remember, it’s written by a man who lives in New Zealand. And that’s where the story takes place. Authenticity.
This is the first book in a “spin-off” series. The story is based on events mentioned in Extinction Horizon by Nicholas Sansbury Smith yet set in New Zealand. Jack and Dee Gee have been married for a relatively short time. When Jack goes on a solo hiking trip he had no idea what would await his return. Now his main thoughts are getting back to Dee and making sure she is all right in a world gone all wrong.
A super addition to the EXTINCTION CYCLE world
This novella takes place in New Zealand (I don’t think I’ve ever read a book based there before so was interesting and informative). It is based on the EXTINCTION CYCLE series (7 books plus a prequel) by author Nicholas Sansbury Smith. It is a sci fi horror look at a plausible and terrifying reason for zombie-like monsters called Variants. Smith’s books are based mostly in the U.S. and author Adrian Smith (no relation) bases his trilogy in New Zealand.
This first novella starts with Jack Gee, Mr. Normal Guy, on a camping hiking trip. As he heads home to his wife Dee, he finds that the world has fallen apart since he’s been gone.
This first novella tells of his and Dee’s extreme trials in trying to stay alive and hopefully find their way back to each other, meeting humans and Variants on their journeys.
I highly recommend this gem and of course the entire EXTINCTION CYCLE series.
