Wonderful, unique horror. What’s more frightening than something that seems so harmless? Loved this one and will definitely will be read again in the future.
I will start off by saying I watched the movie many years ago this is the first time I picked up the book to read it. This was a fun and descriptive horror read. The Ruins is a Mexican vacation gone wrong when a group of friends goes off into the jungle to find a friend’s missing brother. What follows is a few long days of horror trapped on the …
If you’re looking for a page-turner in the horror genre, look no further. Two young couples on a Mexican vacation agree to help a German man look for his brother who was accompanying a woman into some archaeological ruins. The group is warned that the area they are entering is bad but they press on where terror awaits them.
Hands down the BEST horror novel I’ve ever read.
‘It was the vine.’
If you’re scared of plants, don’t read this. If you’re not, you will be. Smith grabs your attention and never lets go, no mean feat for a story that unravels, more or less, in one place. This is horror at its absolute best. It will burrow into your darkest fears, build a nest there, and grow. When horror school starts up, this …
This book is a horror novel. Four friends are vacationing in Cancun when they meet a German who says his brother is missing. The brother had met a woman who was on an archeological dig and went to the dig with her. He has not returned. The four friends, Eric and Stacy, Jeff and Amy, along with Mathias, go to search for the brother. The ruins …
Great tale, but be warned – it’s intense
Great tale, only a handful of characters – which serves the tale well.
It’s a horror – starts out eerie, ends up as a horror. Great tale.
This book was pretty savage and might make you scared to take a trip off the beaten path in Mexico.
Read this one to compare to the movie. Wish I had read it before seeing the movie. Its a scary one.
I’m usually not a fan of horror, but this book grabbed me right from the start and I couldn’t put it down. You will never look at your houseplants the same way ever again.
Wow! This a creepy (no pun) monster book! Awesome!
Definitely not for faint of heart
It’s a solid horror book, hitting the right beats, but it’s even more interesting when you pair it with the movie, also written by Scott Smith. A few other creative writing students and I read the book, watched the movie, then listened to the commentary track where Smith discusses the changes he made, why he made them, and how effective they were.
This book had a wonderfully described setting that made me feel like I was there with the characters. Although I can’t say I really related to any of them, I did feel bad for them as they suffered through all the horrors they were forced through to the end. Once they reached the titular “ruins,” I was unable to put the book down until I was …
One of the best horror novels I’ve ever read. Truly original, this is a look at the darkest parts of our souls.
So twisted and scary, I was very happy I wasn’t a character in this book
An entertaining read on the beach this summer. Very predictable, yet still engaging. There was only one ending that would work and he telegraphed it from the start. After all that, it was still a very fun read.
Good read!
A friend recommend this to me. I hated it, slow, plodding, boring. I didn’t like any of the characters. I guess we do not have the same taste.
Depressing, hopeless shallow characters, silly situation. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
