I just love Lindsay Emory’s voice and that bit of action-adventure that you get in her royal books! Caroline’s story really worked for me, with twists and turns and a grumpy/dreamy bodyguard to boot. Loved this one!
The thing that makes Lindsay Emory’s royal books so unique is they aren’t what you think they are. They are mini mystery adventures with royalty thrown in for high stakes, high drama fun! I loved The Royal Runaway and I loved getting a chance to return to Dreiden for another fun romp. Definitely recommend this book for readers who enjoy escaping into another world for a few hours!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
This book technically follows The Royal Runaway but each of these novels are stand alone books. You won’t be lost reading The Royal Bodyguard if you’ve not read Runaway. I do encourage you to read The Royal Runaway though.
In this edition of the royal family of Drieden the focus is on the second oldest female princess. Caroline has been excommunicated from the royal family by her grandmother, the Queen, but that will never stop her from caring for them.
She’s had some crazy things happen in her adult life and we find her in hiding in Italy. No one knows where she is…or so she thinks. That is until her sister, the Heir, ex-fiance shows up near her house and then a royal bodyguard is suddenly in her space.
Lots of drama people! Not bad drama. It’s just enough to keep you flipping the pages to see what’s going to happen next. There were some parts where I was a little confused as to what was going through Caroline’s head but that’s Caroline for ya.
If you like royalty stories this book will help with your craving.
With being a fan of The Royal Runaway, I was over the moon when I heard about Caroline, Theodora’s estranged sister, getting her own story in The Royal Bodyguard. It didn’t quite hit home with me like it did with Theodora’s story, but I loved that we get to know Caroline a bit more and just their family, overall.
I’m becoming quite the fan of Lindsay’s writing, she pulls you in from the very beginning. And even though I wasn’t loving it as much as I hoped, I was engaged the whole time.
I was hoping for more of a connection between Caroline and Hugh. There’s definitely some history there and evident that they liked each other, but I wasn’t exactly feeling it.
I felt like we only got to see one side of Caroline and Hugh, and was wishing for a little bit development with their character. Caroline was so focused on her estrangement more than anything else. She even held it against her sister, which seemed a little uncalled for. However, I absolutely adore Theodora, so that could be why
I loved the little reunion between Caroline and Theodora, even though it seemed a bit rough at first. With that being said, I still enjoyed this read and am definitely looking forward to the next one since one of the story arcs is still going.
**I RECEIVED A COMPLIMENTARY READER’S COPY FROM THE PUBLISHER FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. THIS DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR CONTENT OF MY REVIEW**
Different. If I had to choose one word to describe this story that would be the word. I was expecting a sort of lighthearted story and in some ways it was. BUT, it was also so much more.
Caroline was a very interesting main character; one that I liked. She was the black sheep of the family. The real truth is that she was unique and marched to the beat of her own drummer. Oh, she had tried to be the proper, make no waves Princess Caroline. She followed the “rules” for years until she just couldn’t do it anymore. And when she was stripped of her titles and basically exiled from her family? All bets are off! She still loves her family, well most of them but she is left making her own life now.
The push-pull relationship between Hugh and Caroline made for some interesting reading. Hugh was really good at hiding his feelings but you could just sense that there was more there than just someone in a palace guard mode. He does really keep all his cards close to his vest. You think Caroline has some secrets? Well so does Hugh.
Be prepared to visit more palaces, countries and places. Because there is a threat and a mystery or two that needs to be sorted out.
I did like how the story was concluded. It also had a slight hook, a question that could lead to another story about this family.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Loving the mix of suspense and romance! After Caroline renounces her title and then loses her husband in a tragic way, she goes into hiding – unwilling to go back to her family after they disowned her for her marriage. But when her sister’s fiancé, who was presumed dead, shows up asking for her help, while confused she wants to figure out what is going on. At the same time, her old bodyguard, and previous crush Hugh shows up, and he clues Caroline into what exactly is going on with her sister’s fiancé and the danger she is in. As Caroline and Hugh work together to put together the pieces of the story and the reasoning behind what is going on, while also running for their safety, we see if Hugh can continue to deflect Caroline’s feelings or if she finally breaks down his walls. I was somewhat confused throughout the book, but everything ended up clarifying itself in the end. I really loved Caroline’s character because she was so strong and unwilling to go running back to those who disowned her for wanting to live her own life in the first place. I also really enjoyed the suspense and mystery of trying to figure out what her sister’s fiancé was doing and the reasoning behind it, and the connection between them all had me reeling! Overall it was definitely an enjoyable book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
It is told from Caroline’s POV and it is a bit like she is talking to us at times – this is a writing style I tend to enjoy especially with ROM Com’s for me it creates a stronger connection with the mc
Caroline seems to have a lot of secrets hiding in her closet and as the story progresses it looks as though if they were to be exposed not only might they be damaging to her personally (royal image and all that jazz) but they also might hurt those she cares about.
Curious it seems by nature and maybe even a bit of nurture (wait till you meet moms- heck grandma even) Caroline tends to waltz right into trouble even when she is trying to be helpful. I did find her various predicaments quite amusing as well as her inner monologues.
I had to remind myself at times she was raised as a princess so her “real world” skills are not quite present? Putting it mildly
Then we have Hugh – Hugh is a cautious man – A man of few words.
A big bear of a man that I would definitely cuddle with on a cold Dresdin evening… Just saying
I liked that he tried to do what he perceived as the right thing even if he eventually figured out that he didn’t have a chance of following the book when it came to his Princess
The story line was pretty solid and kept an entertaining pace, for the most part, occasionally there was a bit of a lull or something occurred that pulled me out of the story. The end was a bit abrupt but it did seem to tie up the story line … for now.
Since I did not read the first in this series I did have to put the pieces together (which was quite easy) regarding Leah and now I am curious about her story.
The copy I read was comp #TheRoyalBodyguard #NetGalley
A sweet fairytale story. Caroline is the black sheep of the royal family and is recovering from the death of her family. Hugh is the man who had broken her heart and is once again her bodyguard. The story is filled with multiple layers of intrigue between the different characters. The plot is filled with plenty of surprises and plot twists. As they continue to run from danger they also get to know each and find themselves and love.
