The Round House won the National Book Award for fiction.
One of the most revered novelists of our time—a brilliant chronicler of Native-American life—Louise Erdrich returns to the territory of her bestselling, Pulitzer Prize finalist The Plague of Doves with The Round House, transporting readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of … told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family.
Riveting and suspenseful, arguably the most accessible novel to date from the creator of Love Medicine, The Beet Queen, and The Bingo Palace, Erdrich’s The Round House is a page-turning masterpiece of literary fiction—at once a powerful coming-of-age story, a mystery, and a tender, moving novel of family, history, and culture.

Just read The Round House and loved it. It takes place on a reservation in North Dakota, and it’s narrated by a Native American man looking back on the summer he was 13, when his mother was sexually assaulted and nearly murdered. The novel is centered around the mystery of this attack, but it’s really a coming-of-age story. It sounds heavy, and it …
Loved this story! Complex characters well written, with the young male protagonist solving a sad whodunnit in his own way. Fascinating insights into Ojibwe life, history and culture. Strongly recommend.
A very intersring read, learned many things about thr American Indian culture. Very good story line..Excelent!
This book was recommended as a good coming-of-age Native American story. There are many things to like, particularly learning more about reservation life, laws pertaining to native Americans, and their culture. The characters are interesting and well developed. The 13-year-old main character’s family is dealing with a violent act…which is …
Anything Louise Erdrich writes is great. This is another of her wonderfully written books weaving old beliefs into a fascinating story.
Absolutely loved this book. Very moving and thought provoking. A wonderful read.
I think the real value in this book is the story of what happened to the mother of the main character – and how the family dealt with it. Most people who do not live near higher populations of Native Americans or Alaska Natives are not aware that this happens to indigenous women at far higher rates than for other women. So, this is an issue with …
Wonderful writing
I’m going to read it again, soon.
Informative and fascinating; a good historical fiction novel worth reading for many reasons, but the knowledge of a part of American history to which we are rarely exposed.
Insightful exploration of moral gray areas.
One of my most favorite books. This author writes as if she had a paint brush. I could visually see what she was talking about. An eye-opener in regard to just on the reservation. Appauling…
I call this book the Native American To Kill A Mockingbird.
Its kinda iconic
Live how she draws from her cultural roots to weave thought provoking and interesting stories. One of my favorite authors.
I didn’t like it.
I’m glad I read this. Beautifully written book from the voice of a 13 year old Native American boy named Joe. Joe’s life is impacted by the rape of his mother. But the story is also about life on the Indian reservation. His father is an attorney who uses law as building blocks in the hope of legally overturning previous judicial decisions that …
A beautifully written book that brings much needed attention to the plight of Native Americans who live on reservations and the injustices of our law enforcement and justice systems towards this population. At times funny, but more often tragic, it’s a book that every American should read.
A Native American boy investigates his mother’s rape and attempted murder when she refuses to talk about what happened, or about anything at all.
I was not ready for anything that happened in this book. Stuff happened. Before I grasped what was going on (emotionally, that is; it was all written in clear prose), something else slammed into me. …
The Round House is an amazing, multi-layered novel, with something of interest for readers who enjoy the suspense/mystery/crime genres, literary fiction, coming-of-age stories, and Native American culture. Even something of interest for us lawyers. The law with respect to the jurisdiction of tribal courts was new to me, and I had an interesting …
