This half-historical, half-cozy mystery makes for a nice pre-bedtime read when you don’t want anything too challenging. Even though there’s a lot of action and the ending came as somewhat of a surprise, reporter Penny Green has an air of naive innocence that made me smile.
A DEFINITE surprise at the end! Wow, didn’t see that one coming!!!!!
if you groove with historically based mysteries you will freakin’ love this book!! it is fantastic!!!
Penny Green has never been to the rookeries, a dangerous London slum. But in the 1870’s she travels there as a reporter following a story. As a woman, she is at a disadvantage in a man’s world, plus she has an editor who gives in to pressure and interferes with her ability to follow her story. A terrific book set just before Jack the Ripper terrorized London, this story focuses on another serial killer without sacrificing any of the horrible details of nineteenth century London.
One of my favorite series. Great characters and a view of hard life in Victorian England. I highly recommend.
An interesting look at life in London during Victorian times
I liked this book. Very easy read. A mystery without gore or cursing. I really enjoyed it.
I really like the characters that Organ has created. This is the second book in the series and Penny Green is very realistic. The author does a good job of creating the environment, culture and society of Victorian London. The book describes the challenges residents faced in everyday life, and the difficulty that the police and Scotland Yard encountered in bringing murderers to justice.
I enjoyed this book looking forward to the next books in this series
Good descriptions of place and time. Protagonist perky and gutsy
Lets you know how things used to be!!
All of the listed above-mentioned.
I really like the character of the female journalist that Emily Organ has created, as an independent woman of her times. She is a strong personality, while still very feminine and quite well written. She also keeps the action well paced and involves the reader in her stories quite well. I couldn’t help but compare this story with a Jack-the-Ripper-esque type of plot. I think she brought it about rather well. And for those who have always wanted a true resolution to the Jack the Ripper mystery delivered it in a rather elegant way.
Loved the story and history included.
I enjoy reading, especially who-done-its. I have to say I couldn’t anticipate the ending until the last chapter.
Female protagonist makes this Victorian mystery an interesting read. Shows the seamy side of London. Part of a series but I think one is enough
I enjoy English historical novels. Interesting characters.
I enjoyed reading the book esp.’the setting in 1800’s London. Nice historical information.
Thought provocing…a very trying period in history for a woman and one of science harder still….very interesting.
Clean mystery. No foul language or inappropriate sexual behavior. Nice read.
