Loved it. Great chemistry, wonderful characters, fabulous world building, and a non stop rollicking good story that has no flaws. Under it all rolls a theme of prejudice and being the underdog, leaving the ending uncertain the whole way through. A great stand alone read. Look forward to the next one.
Great balls of fire! This book was a great start to the Inferno Series!

Brand and Kasia should never have made it together.
Brand, a rogue dragon shifter, mercenary, and loner, has been on his own since he was ten when something horrific happened. Since then, he has been singularly focused on revenge.
Kasia, a rare phoenix, supposedly good luck to whomever she mates, was raised by her mother and three sisters to never trust the dragons. You see, a dragon shifter killed Kasia’s father because he mated with a phoenix and he was consumed with jealousy and then centuries later, a dragon king kills her mother. Her mother’s final act to hide Kasia and her sisters to try and keep them safe.
Brand on a mission to help the Blue Dragon King so he can take down his target. Revenge is consuming him, that is until he meets Kasia. That first meeting was hot to say the least. I mean literally hot. Kasia has visions, but when she does…she explodes into flames, is blinded, and essentially experiences a full body migraine. As Brand watches one of Kasia’s episodes, he quickly jumps in to assist. For some reason, his touch soothes Kasia, he soothes Kasia.
Kasia has been having visions for years, and the man standing before her now has been littered throughout them. She instantly feels as though she can trust him, but can she trust anyone? Brand’s mission is to find the phoenix and turn her over to the Blue Dragon King, Ladon so the Blue King will have more power and maybe, give Brand a clan.
This book laid out a sturdy foundation for what I suspect is going to be a fantastic series. We discover how everyone has come to be where they are now. The Rogue King had an engaging story, characters that drew you in and were well developed, and the main characters had chemistry off the charts, it was explosive.
I definitely recommend this book and will continue to read this series! That ending has me needing to know what will happen in Ladon’s book. I have a feeling Ladon’s world is likely to burst into flames!
Wonderful start to a series. I can’t wait for the next two (I already pre-ordered mine). Got to love the name she gave to her hellhound!!!
WOW!!! This story is packed with action, suspense, spies, double agents, and of course the good guys. It’s a fast aced book that grabs ya from the start! You know going forward the rogue dragon gets the girl but damn hot stuff on the road to claiming each other! Kasia is a spunky, sassy heroine! Brand is a tough as nails hot guy with an attitude… go figure LOL. I’d be interested in knowing more about Hershel also! Every girl needs a Maul by her side! This is the first story involving a phoenix I’ve read where the phoenix can’t fly but still it’s an awesome story from page 1 to page 429! I just love dragons!!! Can’t wait to read the next story, Blood King! Would like to read Maul’s story and the other 3 sisters stories also. Ms. Owen wrote so well I could see the scenes in my mind! Love it!!!
I received this book in my Bite Me Box.
Love the phoenix/dragon relationship mix. The story of the relationship in regard to being king was a good one. Kasia is strong and caring. Loved her relationship with Maul. We see just a little of her sisters and they should have great stories too by what little background was revealed. Brand wasn’t overbearing and all macho. He was a perfect rogue dragon. The book was a bit long for the story, it could have been shortened and still the story would have been told well. Will definitely be picking up the next one.
After the death of her mother, Kasia and her sisters are forced to separate. The phoenix power dispersed to them during their dying mother’s last act makes the siblings highly sought after by the warring dragon clans. On the run and unable to fully command her powers, Kasia meets Brand. He assures Kasia that to remain safe, she must accompany him to the blue dragon clan ruler King Ladon and she agrees.
On their journey, Kasia and Brand interact with various supernatural entities trying to either help or harm them. The two possess genuine chemistry. As their desire for one another increases the conflict in the story gains as well. Several of the supporting characters are intriguing, and I look forward to encountering them in future stories. Evil found in this world is truly despicable and without remorse. But the author equally discovers ways to include doubt as to whether those who seem trustworthy genuinely are, further increasing tension. It is an exhilarating ride as Kasia and Brand navigate their way through conflicts in The Rogue King.
The Rogue King represents an excellent start to the Inferno Rising series. The romance behind the story is integral to the plot, and it is quite sensual. But the excellent world-building could appeal to a predominantly urban fantasy audience. I enjoyed the balance between the two while reading an early copy of this book and will most definitely be continuing with the next book release in this series.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Jumping straight in here, cos ooooooeeeee I did LOVE this book!!
Brand is a rogue dragon, without a clan. Kasia, a Phoenix without a family. A Phoenix is the only one who can mate with the High King of ALL the dragons, and the makes her valuable. Brand is tasked with delivering Kasia to the Blood King, to his only friend from childhood. But Kasia ignites something in Brand, and he knows he cannot give up his mate.
This was, quite possibly, my favourite read this month! I mean, I had a lie in, read a few pages before you have to dig yourself out your pit, and before you know it, 3 hours has past and you’ve about flung your kindle (but not quite!) at the wall, cos now you NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED book two, yesterday!
Everyone, and I mean everyone IMPORTANT has a say: Kasia, Brand, and all those trying to get Kasia (but not saying who!)
Not everything is immediately clear, and you put things together all kinds of wrong before things are cleared up. And I LOVE being kept on my toes!
It’s different, and I LOVE different, with the Phoenix being the key to High King status. With female born dragons being unable to bare children. With Kasia and her sisters having hidden for so long, and Kasia not doing so well hiding herself anymore.
There is an ongoing story arc, that makes you NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED book two, yesterday, to see what happens to Kasia’s sisters. You can’t see what’s going to happen, not in the long term, but a massive clue screams at you for one sister, and there is another, much less subtle clue, for another. Whether that pans out how I see it, remains to be seen, but I WILL be reading these books!
Thank you, Ms Owen, for proper making my day!

I had never heard of this author before, which is weird since she’s been around for awhile. But, through the membership of NetGalley, i chose this book to do some light reading while waiting for authors I’m familiar with to come out with new books. I’ve got really good taste!
This was a very well written, very exciting, very romantic and very Dragon! book of Dragon shifters and Phoenixes. The storyline was well thought out and flowed wonderfully, giving me 2 of my favorite paranormal creatures in the same novel. With action galore from the very beginning, and with romance blossoming between 2 very similar yet very different creatures, I didn’t have a moment of boredom. Not for a single minute did I want to put it down because there was too much description or too much inane dialogue. This has become an unusual occurrence since overdone description seems to be rampant everywhere. This was truly a treat.
I also found myself liking most of the characters, and enjoying hating the ones that I hated. Between Kasia, Brand, Maul, Ladon and the various characters on the good side, and Pytheios, Uther and the myriad of characters on the evil side, there is no lacking for entertaining dialogue and exciting action scenes, be it fights or passion. All of which were gripping enough that I found myself unable to put the book down. I mean, what else would you expect with a tussle over the crown of High King, a tug of war over the Phoenix and a wrestling match over the heart. Throw in some snappy dialogue that combined sarcasm and wit with actual conversation and you have the recipe for an exceptionally enjoyable novel. And for someone like me who was thoroughly sick of shifter novels, this was is genuine find.
I’m looking forward to reading The Blood King, book 2 in the Inferno Rising series, and going back and reading the sister series, Fire’s Edge. It’s always fun to find a new author, well, new to me anyway, to add to my library.
Very Well Done, Abigail Owen. Very Well Done indeed! You actually brought me back to shifters, which I never saw coming!
This book was given to my by NetGalley for which I am providing an honest and unbiased review of my own volition.
Kasia is on the run to stay ahead of dragon shifters. Her being a phoenix makes her prized as a mate to the dragons. She ends up running into Brand, a rogue dragon shifter looking for her. He has his own agenda. These two have chemistry but also heartbreaking pasts to overcome. I loved this story.
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley and am leaving a review.
WOW! Just Wow! If any one reads my reviews and I mean anyone, they all know I have a THANG FOR DRAGONS!!!! I FREAKING LUUUURRRVVVEEE THEM SO MUCH!!! If I had a wish, it would be that I could shift into a dragon, Lol. This is my first read by this author and man, did she take me on a FIRE-BREATHING DRAGON RIDE!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!! This is Brand and Kasia story. Brand is a rogue dragon betrayed and on a quest for vengeance to those who wronged him and his family. Kasia, a Phoenix on the run with her sisters, too has been betrayed. Brand knows that if he mates with a Phoenix, he can enact his revenge on the dragon clan that killed his family. However, though Kasia and Brand meet and there is definitely some fire attraction going on, she feels that she cannot trust any dragons, as it was a dragon who murdered her Mum. Filled with action, suspense, a thrilling roller coaster ride of adventure, with hot some hot steamy sex thrown in, make for a wonderfully, well written story. I am sooooooo looking forward to the next book! I cannot wait!!***** 5 STEAMING, CONFLAGRATION, SCORCHING, INFERO, PYRE STARS*******
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
If you’ve read Abigail Owen’s Fire’s Edge series this new series, Inferno Rising, is a close cousin. If you haven’t read the others, you don’t have to, but I highly recommend them.
The Rogue King starts off with Kasia, a phoenix, being given her powers. Does she know what they’ll be? Will she know how to control them? Can she hide her abilities, as well as herself, from the creatures seeking to use her? You’ll love this feisty heroin and her cuddly pet.
Brand, a rogue dragon shifter, has to find the phoenix and bring her to the king. Doing so will bring him a step closer to the revenge he’s lived centuries to take. He’s the handsome, well-built, brooding, tough guy we all find so incredibly sexy.
The action and intrigue in this story will not only make you keep reading – it’ll have you doing it at the edge of your seat. Talk about a thrill ride! The ending is awesome!!!
The Rogue King by Abigail Owen is book One in the Inferno Rising Series. This is the story of Brand Astarot and Kasia Amon.
Brand is a Golden Dragon who has been shunned and he is looking for revenge which he thinks if he can get the rare phoenix he can put his plan in motion. Kasia is the rare phoenix who has been attempting to hid to keep herself and her family safe. But now Brand is in town looking for her…but when he spots her Brand starts a new plan in motions. Kasia stirs things in him that he hasn’t felt before.
Enjoyed their story.
*New author for me
I LOVED this story. I have to say at; first, I was like what am I reading, and I was a little not confused, just kind of not into it. But it did not take long for me to jump into the story and not want to put it down.
The Rogue King is a story about the dragon fractions, war, the phoenix history, and finding your mate. This story is so much more than just an ordinary dragon story. Abigail brought a new storyline to the dragon theme, and I loved it.
The Rogue King is an action-packed story with compelling characters that will make you fall in love. The males are strong, and alpha, but the woman are just as strong and will take them on when they have to.
I can not wait to see what is next. This book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger for the two main characters, but the storyline does go on. So I am ready for the next one, now, please!
I loved Abigail Owen’s Fire’s Edge series, so when I was given the opportunity to begin reading another I immediately took advantage. I loved every word of this story. I admit I can’t recall ever reading a novel that included a phoenix so that in itself made it all the more interesting. Brand was an enigma, Kasia headstrong and unrelenting. Combine the two and you have a steamy, highly combustible, hard to put down book!
What a great First-in-Series!
It had a bit of a slow start for me but boy oh boy, did it pick up. The sexual tension is off the charts and I was totally rooting for them by the end!
Great characters, I adored Maul. I’m anxious to find out who he really is. (I have a theory.)
Overall it’s a fantastic 4 star read.
This book is primarily about the intricacies and politics of a dragon shifter world, with the occasional phoenix, werewolf, demon and other assorted paranormal creatures thrown in for good measure.
Brand and Kasia seem to be at odds over what they want for their futures… but looking at the bigger pictures reveals (well into the book!) that they really have much the same goal and certainly both stand to benefit if they only work together. Besides which, they are crazy about one another. Like, white-hot, burning, phoenix flames in-love with one another.
Their attraction from almost the first moment that they meet just about jumps off the page. They banter they engage in is highly entertaining and delightful. And you just know (okay, so you actually DO know pretty early on, due to the nature of Kasia’s visions, first kind of vague and then very specific) that they are fated to be together.
But each of them is proud and fragile, and too afraid to express their true feelings for the other. Also, both Brand and Kasia are trying to do their duty and help achieve the greater good. Only they are so focused on the paths they think they must follow, that for a long time they fail to realize, as the saying goes, that “all roads lead to Rome.” Or, in this case, other roads can also achieve justice for their families, and a better future for their entire society. Not to mention a happily-ever-after for the two of them.
As delightful as these two are (well, he is often just a jerk and she can be a bit needy, but overall they are pretty great!), I absolutely adored the supporting cast of their story. From Bleidd to Hershel, Ladon and Arden, to the brief glimpses that we get of Kasia’s three sisters, especially Skylar right at the very end of this tale – all brought something unique to the table. Of course, there were the “bad guys” as well, but they were truly awful, so we’ll just skip right over them.
One of the only things that truly irritated me about this book was how very often Kasia thought the words “my mother taught me that.” We get it! Your mom was great and she taught you a lot of survival skills and other useful information, but you don’t have to expound on it in every chapter.
Otherwise though, the story was interesting, intriguing, and entertaining. I understand that this is the first in a four-book series, and there is a crossover/companion series as well, so there will be a lot more material about this world available. I can’t wait to read them!
The Rogue King is my first book by this author and I loved it. Sexy dragon shifters with attitude and strong female leads create a page turner as the story builds fantastic worlds. Phoenixes are highly sought after and being one of the last ones, Kasia Amon and her sisters have spent their lives hiding. Their mother trained them to be tough and to fear dragons. Brand Astarot’s whole life is about revenge. He is a rogue dragon that works as a mercenary and the blue king sends him to retrieve the phoenix. The chemistry between these two is off the charts as they fight fate. Brand is supposed to give her up to the blue king but he wants to hold her for himself. The HEA is hard fought but so much the sweeter for it. I love Kasia’s sass and how she gives as good as she takes to cause Brand all kinds of problems. With a dramatic sigh, Brand wins a coveted place on the best book boyfriends of all time list. This series promises to be totally addicting and Ms Owen’s becomes a must read author. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
I loved The Rogue King! I read the Fire’s Edge Series and loved it. I think The Rogue King, the first book in the Inferno Rising Series is the best so far. I have really fallen in love with these Dragon shifters and their mates. Brand and Kasia are my favorites so far. This book has lots of action and plenty of romance. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I give The Rogue King 5 stars for its great read.
I would recommend this book to Paranormal Romance Fans.

Abigail Owen is a fairly new author to me and I just fell in love with her work when I read Fire’s Edge series. I was completely hungry for more when it comes to her dragon-shifter series, so I was more than excited when she was giving us a spin-off. First up is Brand and Kasia, and these two are absolute fire, together!
I completely devoured The Rogue King, I wasn’t exactly sure how the story was going to go, but it was quite the ride from beginning to end. All while, the steamy connection that these two have will have you shipping these two so hard.
I loved that they both had different goals when it came to what they were heading towards. There was an instant connection between them and we can all sum the guesses what that exactly meant. And deep down, you know that they know it as well, but you’ll be wondering long it’ll take them to fully recognize it. A lot longer than I expected.
The one thing that I’ve noticed when it comes to books I’ve read by Abigail is that they’re getting better every single time. I love the world that she created for us and she does a phenomenal job covering everything without saying way too much. I wasn’t overwhelmed with the many clans and characters mentioned at all.
There’s a lot of barriers that Kasia and Brand have to get through and it makes for an action-packed ride. With every chapter you get through, secrets are revealed and the bigger picture becomes more than we’ve ever imagined.
I absolutely enjoyed every aspect of this story and you won’t be able to help, but just fall in love with Kasia and Brand. Between their banter and fiery attraction between them, it’s just one of things that will carry you through to the end.
It looks like we’ll have 3 books added to this series and I won’t reveal much except that I’m unbelievably excited for the next one! It’ll be FANNNNNTASTICCC!
**I RECEIVED A COMPLIMENTARY READER’S COPY FROM NETGALLEY AND ENTANGLED AMARA IN CONSIDERATION FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. **
Abigail Owen
She chose her moment to die…to save her children!
It is insta love, which in the dragon world is very acceptable, and Brand has an overwhelming need to help the woman covered in flames.
Kasia has seen him in her visions. She has been waiting for him. Everyone wants her…dragons, werewolves, vampires… for their own reasons, but no one will make her do something that isn’t right for her.
Brand is a rogue, unclaimed by any dragon clan.
Though the theme, dragons and paranormal romance is familiar, the Phoenix is rare and coveted…by me and other lovers of the supernatural world. Even though I know dragon meets girl, falls in love, braves many dangers and lives happy ever after, it’s the bits and pieces that an author like Abigail Owen adds that makes the story special.
The world building makes the scenery and action come to life. The characters are easy for me to remember, because the story engulfed me. At times the dialogue is humorous, helping alleviate the feeling of danger that hovers around the characters. Tons of action and never a dull moment.
I have read several of Abigail Owen’s series and look forward to each and every story she writes. As expected, she gave me a magical love story and new characters to love in her new Inferno Rising series. I have met two of Kasia’s sisters and I think I know who’s story may be next. I can hardly wait.
