Because of who – and what – she is, Kasia Amon is a master at hiding. To dragon shifters, she’s a treasure to be taken and claimed and there’s a sexy dragon shifter in town hunting for her and she can’t stop bursting into flames. Turning a phoenix over to the feared Blood King would get Brand Astarot one step closer to the revenge he’s waited centuries for. But when Kasia sparks a white-hot need inside him – he’ll have to make a new plan: claim her for himself and take back his birthright.
The ‘Inferno Rising’ series is off to a fabulous start – one that gets the adrenaline pumping, the heart pounding and the passions soaring. The strong, sexy and bold characters are too die for… they have some uber hot chemistry and have sparks flying in every direction throughout their turbulent relationship. They both are very stubborn and are quite perfect for each other as they continuously overlook what right in front of their hearts while juggling everything that life is throwing at them which has some pretty heavy emotional turmoil flowing from the pages as well.
The plot is fast paced, extremely engaging and suspenseful, guaranteeing that readers can’t put this book down as Brand takes steps to secure his path of revenge. But with enemies dogging their every step, explosive battles and the passion continuously building between them, Brand has to entertain some new, radical ideas if he wants to claim Kasia. The author has also introduced more elements to her world which promises more exciting possibilities are in store for this series while some stunning ‘OH MY’ moments and unexpected twists keeps the adrenaline pumping throughout this energetic, exhilarating and satisfying dragon shifter story.
My first dragon shifter book. Who knew they could be so Badass?
What a great adventure and an awesome romance. I loved this book and after that powerful ending and terrific fight scenes, I can’t wait for Skylar’s story next. The hate to love romance sounds like it will be fantasmorgamsic. This book with was the story of Kasia and Brand. Brand is a rogue dragon shifter due to the fact that Uhler, King of the Gold clan killed his family when Brand was a boy and took over the throne of the Gold clan. Brand hid in the mountain caves and has been a rogue ever since.
Rogue dragons don’t generally survive, they are usually killed by their own kind, so the fact that he has survived over 500 years speaks to how strong he is. However, he is working for his friend the blue king and he has promised to bring him a Phoenix to mate in exchange for his chance at becoming part of the blue clan and getting his revenge on Uhler.
Kasia is one of 4 Daughters of the Phoenix Serafina and her Mate Dragon shifter who was king of the white clan, though their mating wasn’t fully formed at the time the Red King killed him. The legend says that when a Phoenix mates with a Dragon King, that king becomes the High King (leader of the Five Kingdoms). The red king wanted to be the High King and wanted to be immortal as High Kings and Phoenix’s are, so he murdered Kasia’s grandparents, her father, then last year her mother. Her mother just barely had time to send her 4 girls into hiding. Kasia is the oldest and is a Phoenix, we don’t know for certain if any of the others are.
The book has awesome twists and turns. Kasia was in hiding, but is having some sort of burning visions so she goes to a supernatural clinic and the doctor tells everyone and their brother about her. Brand finds her first but she is wary of him. Her father was a Dragon but also a Dragon hunted and killed her mother and the Red King controls 4 of the other kings and their clans. The book definitely end spectacularly. It is a stand-alone but it sets up the next story so that is nice also. I really want to read the next one. The romance was awesome, the sex was steamy but there wasn’t too much, there was more adventure and fantasy and the story was written well.
This shifter paranormal was sheer fun.
In case you don’t know what shifter paranormal romances are, they are HUUUUUUGE over at Kindle e-books. (Check out Zoe Chant for a good example.)
In shifter romances, heroes (and heroines at times) have animal souls, or selves, and they can shift into these animals. Sometimes they have powers. They live among us normal humans, keeping their shifter selves secret, and their culture is a palimpsest over ours. The romances are lusty with high-octane romance, often centering around finding one’s mate for life.
In this one, we’ve got trouble in the world of dragon shifters, the apex-predators of apex-predators. But we begin with our heroine’s mother on the run from a truly evil shifter king, who is determined to capture her and drain her blood so he can become immortal. She’s reached the end of her running after five hundred years–but she goes out in style, sending her four daughters to various corners of the earth.
Kasia, one of the four daughters, is central to this story. She wakes up in a facility, suffering debilitating periods of pain and visions. Brand Astolot, a rogue dragon without a clan, is sent to find her, because Kasia is also a phoenix. Phoenixes have special powers all of their own, and anyone who mates with one is going to get magical bennies.
Kasia doesn’t trust Brand as far as she can throw him, so she steals his one treasure–his car. But Brand is a dragon. He can fly, so she doesn’t get far.
Watching the two bicker as their attraction grows is part of the fun. They are great on the run together. Kasia is no fading flower–she knows martial arts, and she also knows what she likes in a man. If she has to mate with Brand’s boss, well, she can deal . . . if she decides to.
It’s a fun story, with nifty characters. Bonus, Kasia’s pet, Maul the hellhound! This novel comes to a satisfactory resolution, which opening up threads for what will obviously be a series centering on those four sisters.
I really look forward to the rest!
Kasia is special and has been hiding her whole life. What she is… a rare find in the paranormal world and that makes it dangerous for her. Her mother was murdered for what they are. But she has been having visions and with the visions come uncontrollable fire and pain. So she is forced out of hiding to seek the help of a doctor. One who specializes in paranormals.
Brand is a rogue dragon shifter with a quest for revenge. To take out the man who killed his family. He has been on his own since he was a small child, barely escaping the slaughter of his family. Little does anyone know of his origins and he would like to keep it that way. Now a mercenary for hire, he finds things that people want and gets them. Which brings him to his current assignment and the last step in his quest.
Easy right? Guess again. When Brand meets Kasia he immediately recognizes her for what she is. Not only that but he is instantly drawn to her. He feels her pain during the visions and he can control her fire and the pain soothes when he touches her. What is happening? How can this be? Yep! His mission just got a lot harder.
Can Brand deliver her to the Blue Clan king as per his quest?
Wow!!! The books in this series just gets better and better. Abigail Owen makes it hard to choose a favorite. The Rogue King is the first in the Inferno Rising series, a spin off from her Fire’s Edge series. I have to say I loved every minute of this book. It was a dangerous ride.
The characters in this book were amazing. Kasia is a surprising and very resourceful woman. Hey she stole a car by hot wiring it. How cool is that. She was an amazing character who was very kindhearted and true to herself. She was willing to put others before her own safety. Her character was refreshing and sweet.
Brand was definitely a hot commodity. That man was sizzling. He was strong and very independent. The strong silent type. He kept his wall up around his heart as he was determined to get the revenge he so rightly deserved. But he was also protective and sweet, yet humble. He did not believe that he deserved to be loved or have a mate.
Kasia and Brand had this chemistry that was so strong, it was off the charts. How they could deny it was beyond me. They had this connection that just would not stop or go away. A bond that was strong and hard to pull away from.
Overall this book was an amazing beginning to a new series. Even though it is a new setting, we still get a small dose of some old characters from the previous series, which I love. Abigail Owen is a master at writing dragon shifters. She has all the aspects of hot dragon men down to a science. Each one is not only hot and very dominate, they are smart and kind. The world she has built around these characters feel so real and unique. I love the way you feel the passion of her characters in each story. I have cried many times reading these books, as I feel the emotion rolling off the pages. Emotions that a hard to ignore, yet feel amazing. This book is no different.
I truly recommend this book to all you paranormal romance book lovers out there. These dragon shifters are worthy of your love as readers. They are fun, loyal, loving and not to be trifled with. You are guaranteed to fall in love with each book you read. So pick up a copy today. You will be glad you did.
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. This is my first time reading this author, and I hope it won’t be my last.
Holy shiznet!!! I was grabbed from page one and held right until the end. Kasia is a strong female. She’s smart and sassy as well, letting no man or dragon tell her what to do. Brand being so sure of his path, has met his match. I’m so looking forward to reading the next book. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
This was my first Abigail Owen read, and wow, it won’t be my last! This book was fascinating, with dragons, phoenixes and hellhounds, wolves, vampires and demons, just to name some of the many mythical beings in here. But the main focus is on dragons, their clans and wars, and of course their kings. Kings who want/need a Phoenix. And one was found. Brand, a rogue dragon, found Kasia, someone he believes to be a Phoenix, in a clinic. When he questions her, she doesn’t give much away. When she later takes off and steals his car, he finds her and clues her in on the fact he knows what she is. This starts their adventure and holy wow, what an exciting, dangerous, intense adventure it is. I don’t want to say anything else to give it away, but this is one epic read and I can’t wait (and truly hope) for more!!!
This is the start to a new series In this first book we meet Kasia Amon she is one of a set of quadruplets whose mother the last phoenix on earth gave her powers to her four daughters before she was killed by Pytheios of the Red Clan Dragon Shifters. The dragons are divided into four clans Red, Blue White and Gold and each king must marry a phoenix to gain his true powers Kasia has come to the attention of the dragons as she is starting to lose control of her powers, Ladon King of the Blue Clan employs Brand Astarot a rogue dragon ho belongs to no clan (he should be a king) to track Kasia down and bring her to him so they can mate. Only problem is that when he tracks her down she is his mate will he be able to hand her over to Ladon or will his own dragon mark her and claim her Looks like the next story will be Kasia ‘s sister Skylar but who will be her mate I think I have a good idea after that epilogue
5 Stars! The Rouge King by Abigail Owen
Fantastic story brought to life by great characters and awesome creatures.
It is a wickedly fun and exciting story filled to the brim with badass hunky dominate male dragon and wolf shifters and take no crap heroines!
The story is well written and has great world building, strong witty characters, great plots, twist and turns that keeps a reader rooted. I’ve never been a big fan of shifter novels so this was a welcome and pleasant surprise! This author is new to me and I’m a instant fan! I’m looking forward to the next story in this series.
Note: This tantalizing story is adult rated with strong language and very steamy sex scenes. Enjoy!
Kasia Amon is a very rare Phoenix. She has lived all her life hiding from others who would enslave her and use her just because of the legends about her kind. Unfortunately she has had to seek help for the side effects of her recent visions.
Brand Astarot is a dragon shifter without a clan. To try and get accepted he is going to find the one creature that could make his bestfriend the High King of the dragons.
This is an exciting and firey story, full of danger and smoking hot sex scenes. Just about every supernatural on the planet wants our heroine, is our tormented hero up to protecting her??.
This is the first in a new series it’s a complete story with a teaser for the next at the end. I can’t wait to read the next one.
Great, exciting fun
**I received a copy of The Rogue King (Inferno Rising) from Net Galley and Entangled Amara in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinions expressed below are mine alone and not solicited.**
The Rogue King by Abigail Owen is the first book in her Inferno Rising series and boy is it ever a wild ride from start to finish. The first chapter begins with Serefina (Kasia’s mother) who’ll protect her daughters even giving her own life. As she’s a Phoenix they’re a a prize to the Dragon Clans as wives because they prolong their lives. Now I have to say that my knowledge on this mythical beautiful bird is limited to Harry Potter and Percy Lightning books but Ms. Owens did her research quite well I loved this book and give it a 5++ star rating.
Kasia Amon has been on the run and in hiding but her powers as a Phoenix are suddenly uncontrollable with visions. When Brand Astarot finds her at a special hospital he’s able to take her fire within himself but they are soon on the run back to the Blue Dragon clan from shifters and dragons. Can they get to the Blue Dragon clan in Scotland in time or will Pytheios and other dragons take her?
Brand Astarot is a Rogue dragon PI working for Ladon the Blue Dragon’s King but he has a secret that he’s not willing to share even to his best friend. He’s been tasked to bring Kasia to Scotland and Ladon so they can marry. But problems are everywhere when they try to reach the clan plus can Ladon but can he resist his feelings and not make her his? There will be an Epic fight in the end that will have you glued to the book trying to find out how it will all end. Plus a teaser as to who is also protecting Kasia and might she be the one destined for Ladon?
Reborn by fire
Just when I thought this author’s work couldn’t possibly get better, she gives us this fantastic story. She has taken her dragons to a different continent and pulled the action to the royals and the usurpers, filling the pages with the action and adventure that I have come to expect from this author. I love that there is this amazing love story right in the midst of an epic journey to a throne. The addition of the Phoenix adds another element to her dragons and spices up the story. I found it impossible to put this book down once I started reading and I can’t wait to read the next installment.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
A fantastic to a new series!! We start by meeting Kasia’s mother for a brief time giving us some explanation along with the fact that she had quadruplets. As she dies she passes her powers over to her daughters and teleports them to four different safe places. The main story then starts a year later just as Brand is going to investigate a woman that may be the one he has been sent searching for. What follows is a race from danger as the two of them end up traveling together as well as inadvertently falling in love no matter how hard they try not to. Full of amazing world building with lots of key characters giving the series plenty of room to grow. The tidbit at the very end sets up the next book superbly. If you enjoy paranormal romance then you should totally try this one. I really liked is so I give it 4/5 stars.
This was an entertaining, well-written book. Kasia is always in hiding and is hunted by everyone in the supernatural world. Brand has spent his life hiding his true identity. Bringing the phoenix to the Blood King will move him a step closer to the revenge he wants above everything else. There’s something between the two of them they don’t expect, though, and it pulls them toward each other. I enjoyed this book and would read other books by this author.
Every now and again, I get in the mood for a paranormal read. The reason that I tend to stay away from them is the world-building. You either get tons of details which bog down the story or not enough and are lost as to what exactly the setting is. And then you get that rare find.. a perfect balance between world-building and story. Luckily for me, The Rogue King strikes that balance making for a read that you can fall into.
In a world of dragon and wolf shifters, vampires and demons, Kasia is something special ~ a phoenix. Her mother has run and hidden herself and her daughters with the humans after her husband is killed by a vicious rival king hoping to use her and her powers to become the Blood King of the dragon kingdom. After her mother is killed, Kasia is now the one being hunted for her power. Enter gold dragon shifter, Brand. Brand lost his family and his place in the dragon hierarchy as a young child. He has placed his alliance with the red dragons and they need Kasia. Brand and Kasia fight their way to safety as Kasia fights having to be a mate without choice and Brand fights his feelings.
The romance edges more towards enemies-to-lovers then fated mate with funny, battle of the sexes scenes and touching bonding scenes layered with the push and pull of two people who deny their attraction even as it takes them over. The story has vivid characters that are read both mystical and fantastical as well as real. The story moves along at a steady pace, revealing secrets and subplots along the way making for a rich tale. The aerial dragon fight scenes are very well done, making it easy to “see” it on the page.
A great choice for paranormal and romance lovers alike.
Abigail weaves a tale of romance and fantasy in her newest book. Brand is a rogue dragon who lost everything when the current gold dragon king Uther massacres his entire family. Kasia the phoenix; the only one some believe actually she is one of four born to her mother the last known Phoenix. She watched as the current High King murder mother right in front of her. Fate has a plan of its own as when she develops seizures and seeks helps but no other than Brand is thrown in her path. Kasia steals Brand’s car. When Brand catches up to her he has a plan. Take her the last known Phoenix to marry no other than his friend Landon the King of the Blue Dragons. Sometimes the best-laid plan goes awry and the what is supposed to happen is better than out best-laid plans.
This was my first in to read in her Dragon Series and I have to say I was over the moon excited to open it after the first page and I did not put it down until the last page which meant reading into the night. The action and suspense never end with a few steamy scenes thrown in. There are plenty of sexy characters and enjoyable storyline to keep the staunches critic of paranormal romance satisfied. You will find your self a character just for you with her real to life characters and very appealing personalities I wanted to take one home myself right out of the pages. If you are a true fan of dragons, paranormal and romance this is the book for you. I am excited to see where this series goes and I am waiting to pick it up as soon as it hits the stand, especially since I was lucky enough to get this one from Net Galley.
A solid start to a new series, Abigail Owen has crafted a fascinating world fraught with clan politics and filled to the brim with all kinds of paranormal goodness. Owen has done an excellent job of introducing readers to the complex world that Brand and Kasia live in. I have read my share of shifter books but this is the first time I’ve been introduced to a phoenix and I’m here for it! I love the idea of different legendary creatures as shifters. Dragons are fun but I like variety.
I am all about strong, sassy heroines. There is a fine line to walk with Kasia’s character and I felt the final result was the perfect blend of strong yet fallible. Brand is a charming combination of broody, thoughtful alpha-male, with a healthy dash of respect for his female lead. I love his fierce protection of Kasia while still allowing her to make her own decisions. He will grouse about it, especially if she is putting herself in danger, but he will be there in begrudging support. Off the charts chemistry between Brand and Kasia had me hook line and sinker. The steamy bits were on point and worked as a complement to the story rather than hijacking the romance into erotica territory. Don’t get me wrong, it was erotic but there was so much more to the story.
Final thoughts? The Rogue King is an exciting, sexy start to the series Inferno Rising. The epilogue shows all the signs of the next book being an enemies-to-lovers romance and I am here for it! I may or may not have been jumping up and down after reading it and I hope we don’t have to wait too long to meet all the other sisters!
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Rogue King, book 1 in the new Inferno Rising series by Abigail Owen is set in her Fire’s Edge world, so if you’ve read The Mate, The Boss, or The Rookie then you’ve already got a good grasp of the world and some of the politics and habits of the people contained within. If you haven’t, however, you will not be left behind. Though we meet and hear of some of the characters from those books, you won’t be at a loss in the least.
The summary from Mrs. Owen is perfect and leads the reader to the true tone of the book. This is nice, because not all summaries manage that. Our main characters, Kasia and Brand, are both essentially outcasts that will come to find they have a common enemy. In this world, Phoenixes historically end up the destined mate of a dragon, with the relationship being mutually beneficial in that the dragon offers protection while the phoenix offers luck and an extended life span. Because of a power hungry dragon shifter, the entire world was thrown into a bit of chaos. Kasia and her sisters were raised to fear dragon shifters and avoid them at all costs. During the same time period, Brand lost his entire family and became a rogue dragon; which pretty much means he’s hunted by his own kind and has spent his life fighting. Both have a past that makes my heart hurt for them, but also makes me root for them even harder.
Brand is friends with the Blue Dragon King, Ladon, who wants the phoenix for her legendary ‘ability’ to make her mate the High King of all dragons. As he is currently the only dragon king standing against their current high king and his pawn kings, this is important. Most of the book is Brand and Kasia’s journey from Montana to Scotland. Along the way, we get to know the two of them as they get to know one another. We also, as readers, get to learn more about the political maneuverings of the dragons and what’s been going on for the past 500 years or so.
The world Mrs. Owen designed is detailed and quite lush. It’s full of interesting people as well as species both common and uncommon (shifters, vampires, spirits, hellhounds, etc). The perspective changes mostly between Kasia and Brand, but occasionally branches out to other important characters giving us inside views of the happenings outside our current focus. This helps to engender greater love or hatred for other characters, which I believe is a beautiful setup for the future of the series. I definitely look forward to the next books in the series.
This is most definitely a fantasy and also quite clearly a romance. There are steamy scenes as well as profanity and bloodshed present in the book. If you like shifters, paranormal creatures of various types, romance, action, and a dollop of world shaking political restructuring, this is a book you really shouldn’t miss.
Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Owens is a new to me author I found on NetGalley and I am so glad I was browsing their ‘request’ section of ARC’s. After seeing the yummy cover and reading the enticing blurb I definitely wanted to give it a read. I will surely be adding Owens to my new author list of books to explore and definitely this new series – Inferno Rising.
This book was really great! I was hooked from the first page. My only complaint is that I would really like to get my hands on the second book now; this one really left me wanting more.
Appealing characters and an action-packed storyline full of suspense, danger, betrayal, secrets, bonds of brotherhood, dragons and other paranormal creatures, revenge, delicious chemistry, fun banter, and snarky comments are contained in the pages of this well-written story. It is entertaining from beginning to end with plenty of laughs to ease the pulse-pounding tension and sense of urgency that is carried from page to page. Brand and Kasia were made for each other and I loved them together and was pleased with how everything worked out in the end. There was never a dull moment in this story and I am looking forward to reading the next. And with the cliffhanger at the end, I cannot wait to read Landon and Skyler’s fiery adventure.
*I received an ARC from NetGalley and I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
Kasia has been hiding all her life. But a year ago when her mother was killed, she sent each of her daughters away. Kasia is very special but the dragon shifters want her the most. Brand is a rogue dragon shifter and is looking for Kasia to take back to the Blue dragon king. Brand’s family was killed and another dragon took his clan. That’s the only way to get his rightful clan back. Ladon, the blue dragon will help him once he brings Kasia to him. Other paranormals try to capture Kasia but Brand will do anything to keep her safe. Even though he’s not the mating type but the chemistry is out of this world between them. Will Brand realize Kasia is his mate before it’s too late?
Shifters, secrets, steamy. I’d never read this author before but can’t wait for the next one in this series. A lone dragon shifter and a woman who is just coming into her powers. A little confusing at first but then it sucked me right in.
* Voluntarily read and reviewed this for NetGalley *
This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it definitely won’t be my last. It was absolutely fantastic!!! This paranormal story was non-stop action from beginning to end. I loved the characters, the storyline and the authors writing style. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. The female characters in this story, especially Kasia were not weak in any way. I love that they say what they want and mean what they say. They hold their own against all of the male characters and let them know from the start that they will not just sit back and watch. Kasia and Brand’s story is one that must be read and I’m excited to read Landon’s story. I know from this cliffhanger ending that he will definitely have his hands full and that his mate will challenge him as much as Kasia did Brand. I can’t wait for the next book.
