This story just drew me in right from the beginning. I mean Adam Westfield is an ex-Franciscan Friar. He murdered another friar who was molesting a young child. Adam saw red and in his rage, he threw the other man across the room. He was killed when his hit his head. Adam’s foster brother, who is a cop, arrested him when they confronted him in the church, praying for forgiveness. Adam was a model prisoner who served little over half his 10 year sentence. Upon his release, he cross to the U.S.
Adam comes to Heavenly Pastures at the suggestion of the local priest. Sage Hammond is struggling to keep her dead husband’s horse ranch from foreclosure. The ranch was in the black until her husband, Mark, falls off his horse and hits his head. The medical bills puts the ranch in dire straits. Sage turns Adam away and as he is leaving, a neighbor comes and practically threatens Sage to sell out before going into foreclosure.
As events unfold, I fell more and more in love with Adam. He was such a humble man to do what he did. He was upfront with his history. The hurdles that these two characters go through were daunting. I love Sage’s two children especially Jenna or as Adam calls her “Little Bird”.
This is written in a dual POV format. I loved this as I am able to understand the character so much better during a scene. It is a sexy story so I would only recommend this to anyone over the age of 18.
Wow this one awesome book
At first look at the cover has you thinking the book is set in the late 1890s but it’s present day about a ex-Brother/friar who went to jail protecting a child from abuse after the predator who died from injuries suffered during a fall. When he is released from jail he feels that he needs to travel the country and that God has plans for him. When he arrives in Oklahoma he’s recommended to go to Sage Hammond’s ranch when she needs him most.
While everyone is hesitant to trust him he manages to prove his worth and dedication to those around him daily. But when accidents start to happen on the farm it all leads up to Sage being kidnapped and Adam will rally the town to find her. Will they make it time to save her from a evil mans clutches.
Definitely worth more than 5 stars and I loved it.
Wonderful Story & Narration Captivating & Heartfelt!
The Road to Solace
By: Samantha A. Cole
Narrated by: Donovan Kane
I loved everything about this book, Samantha A. Cole is a gifted author, she has a wonderful writing style, her storylines are original and interesting, they captivated me from start to end. The characters are complex and well developed, they are realistic and easy to relate to. Adam Westfield captured my heart right from the start, a good man forced to do a bad thing, he chose to sacrifice himself and paid for his sins dearly. Yet he still could not forgive himself for what he done, he could not see the goodness of his deeds only the bad. After serving his time he sets out roaming the country, stopping at different parts and working small jobs. He finds himself in Rosewood, Oklahoma becomes friendly with the local Pastor who then refers him to a ranch that is in need of ranch hands. Sage Hammond’s husband died in a riding accident, leaving her to run ranch that has been in his family for years. She also two young children, Jenna and Matthew. She is having financial problems and is barely making ends meet and payments to the bank. When Adam arrives on her ranch looking for a job she goes to send him away, as he is leaving someone else pulls up, Sage’s neighbor telling her she should sell him her ranch before she goes into foreclosure. Upset that he knew her business she throws him off her ranch and Adam backs her up. Adam goes to leave but she tells him he has the job. I loved how everything plays out in this book, it is plotted out nicely and there is never a dull moment. It was great getting to know these two people better and to see them bond, they were great together and for each other. Adam was great with the kids and working on the ranch too. A lot goes on in this book, there is plenty of drama, a bit of angst, some mystery, twists and turns, some thrilling and suspenseful moments, and a whole lot of heart and heartfelt moments. Samantha A. Cole, thank you for this wonderful story and the emotional rollercoaster ride.
I listened to the Audiobook version, Donovan Kane is a terrific narrator and voice artist. He did a great job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving each their own voice and personality. You could hear how much heart he puts into his work & his characters as he projects their emotions into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank for you this great listen
This book has a little bit of everything great in a story. There’s a second chance theme; reality of faith; asking and receiving forgiveness; and, newly formed life of romance. The adventure and touch of mystery in this book was written perfect and I loved it. Sage and her children had lost the love of their lives; Adam had made a decision that affected his life so drastically that he doubted he had a real future. The characters in this story-line actually gave me a feeling of hope and deeper belief in prayer and good works. There are sensual scenes which are well written and yet it has a faith-based belief. I look forward to reading more books by this author. Thanks for a great story.
Released from prison and no longer part of the Friars, Adam needs to start his life over. Sage, a single mother of two young children, needs to hire help in order to get everything done around the ranch. What seems a simple fix does not end up that way when the locals find out Sage has hired the ex-con. But can true love happen when the odds are against them? Or will Adam and Sage end the relationship before they get their chance at a HEA? With great characters and a storyline that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat this book is a must read.
I found Brother Adam Westfield to be fascinating.
1. He was a Franciscan Brother
2. He took out a child ped and that’s how he ended up serving five years
3. He knew Krav Maga
Adam is complex, devout and looking for redemption.
Sage is a widow and a mother who owns a horse ranch, aptly named Heaven’s Pastures.
She hires Adam to help out after she’s having problems with Bart and paying the mortgage.
Can she find hope and he redemption?

Another great hit from Samantha Cole and a surprising new direction from some of her other books. Adam Westfield is a former Franciscan Friar who was released from prison after serving a term for killing a fellow Friar who he caught sexually abusing a young boy. He pleads guilty to avoid having the young boy testify. He hits the road and after hitch hiking around various towns he ends up at the ranch of a young widow, Sage Hammond and her two small children. The author masterfully reveals the relationship that builds between Adam and Sage with all the insecurities and missteps of a man as he discovers the physical and emotional love of a woman, something he never thought he would want, much less have. This is not the usual storyline that you will find from Samantha A. Cole but it is one that you will definitely enjoy.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The book is a good romantic suspense read. The story has a good story line, and the story is a well written read. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry. The story has some unexpected twists and turns. The story is a good second chances not only in life but in love.

A good story
A different angle on a love story. It helps to have a knowledge of the
Catholic church to read this but not necessary. I enjoyed this book
Really enjoyed this one. Adam is a wonderful hero with a tormented soul and Sage is a strong heroine. I like these two together and was glad to see them get their HEA. Nicely done.
Great romance
I couldn’t put this book down! The characters and plot kept my interest throughout.
A former friar from New Yofk released from jail. He is honest and trustworthy but many distrust him. Great Christian story.
Adam was a man of God and in a moment of rage, did the unthinkable! That had me hooked to read the book. This is a totally different style of book that Samantha has brought her readers. I was wondering how a romance between a Godly man and a widow would work out but Samantha nailed it. Sage and Adam are perfect together and they need each other. When things begin happening at the ranch she is trying to hold on to, she’s glad that Adam is around. The story was great as there was a build up to the sexual part of the characters relationship, which I’m glad of. I couldn’t put the book down once I started it. Well done!!!
The Friar is a romance between a religious man that paid for his sins and a strong single mother trying to keep her ranch afloat. The story is sweet and easy to read. It also has a bit of a mystery and suspense.
Overall it’s a solid book. Adam was just a bit too perfect for my taste. Honestly, I didn’t find anything special about any of the characters, so to me this was a bit… boring.
Adam Westfield is a man who feels he has fallen from grace. Now that he has served his time for the sin he committed, he begins searching for meaning and purpose in his life since he can never return to the brotherhood he was forced to leave behind.
Sage Hammond is a woman struggling to maintain the ranch she ran with her now deceased husband. The widowed mother of two is determined to keep the ranch in her family’s name, but is struggling to make ends meet after medical bills forced her to take out a mortgage on the property.
When Adam finds himself on Sage’s land seeking work for meager wages and a place to stay, Sage finds herself reluctantly agreeing to let the handsome stranger stay. It’s not long, however, before sparks begin to fly between Adam and Sage. Adam finds himself both falling in love with a woman as well as with her children – two things he never thought he would experience in life. Sage finds herself ready to let go of her first husband’s memory in the hopes that she can once again find happiness with a man.
Fate, however, does not make this relationship easy. Misfortune seems to have found Sage’s ranch and she and her children are in danger. Will Adam be able to keep them safe while discovering the cause of the danger? Will Sage and Adam be able let go of their pasts to have a chance at a future? One click to find out!
The Friar was very different from Samantha A. Cole’s typical work, however the story was simply stunning. The characters feel so real and are very easy to fall in love with. Adam’s struggles with his past actions are heart breaking at times, and his inner character truly shines the more we discover about that one fateful night. Sage is a strong and sassy woman determined to preserve her children’s future. Watching her learn to let go of the memory of one man to have a chance at love with another was beautiful. I also loved watching Adam fall in love for the first time with not only Sage but her children. The relationship he forms with her young daughter is truly incredible to see.
The Friar is action packed with a plot that will keep you guessing where the danger to Sage and her family is coming from right up to the end. It is a well written mix of romance, sassy banter, heart breaking moments and thrills. Kudos to Samantha A Cole for stepping outside of her box!
