Kara Martinson and Harry Canton weren’t exactly high school sweethearts, but they did share one night neither will ever forget. Twenty-seven years later, Harry surprises Kara at an art gallery opening and discovers he left her with more than just memories when he went away to college. Desperate to connect with the family he never knew existed, Harry convinces his son to move to Stonehill—and … pleads with Kara to come, too.
Kara hasn’t stepped foot in their hometown since the day she was sent away to a home for unwed mothers. Now Harry’s back in her life and as they put together the pieces of his parents’ betrayal, old heartaches start to feel anew. She wants to be near her family, but returning to Iowa means facing some things…and some people…she isn’t quite ready to.
Can Harry convince her to forgive the people who betrayed her so they can embrace the future they were robbed of so long ago? Or will the pain of the past be too much for Kara to overcome?

Sweet love story
I don’t know a couple like Kara and Harry, but I wish I did! They are very likable. Harry’s character should be a role model for men’s behavior…
realistic characters seeking solutions to hard problems.
First book I have read by this author and I loved it. Wonderful characters – looking forward starting the next book in the series. Good thing about finding Marci late is there are books in this series all ready out
This was really a tear jerker but wonderful story. Recommend for anyone who loves a good love story.
I loved this book! Mature adults, mid 40’s, involved in a plot from their teens which comes back to change lives. Great characters, totally opposite, resolve their issues where neither one has the upper hand. Recommend this really enjoyable read.
Never thought I would enjoy a romance about forty five year olds. The Road Leads Back is actually about a unwed pregnant girl being sent away to a compound for unwed mothers in Oregon. Kara and Harry are those out of place kids in high school. Their one night together leads Kara on a long trip home and gives Harry a family he always wanted, in a round about way. Marci Bolden writes a very detailed, emotional story that all lovers can relate to but she also wrote a wonderful piece about family and what happens to families in situations like the one Kara and Harry got themselves into.
I enjoyed the book so much that I’m looking for additional books from this author.
A tear jerker and emotional roller-coaster
Phew! I have to say honestly that I spent most of my time crying while reading this one. Not sure why it touched me on such a deep emotional level. It was totally heartbreaking for me. Full of anger, resentment, hurt and plagued by ‘what ifs’.
I felt instant connection with Kara, she’s such a great character, full of love, ready and willing to forgive but struggling to forget. But everyone deserves second chance, so would she be willing to give one and to take her life in her hands and be finally happy with what she can have? We are not always granted the second chances, and sometimes it is just too late to take back harsh words or to try to mend broken relationships. But what’s done is done and people need to look forward and find a way how to be happy and be there for the others. For me this story is about the rejection, hurt, shows journey back to the family and about many second chances that not many of us is granted.
This is my first book of this author and I really enjoyed the writing style. For sure I will read the rest in the series.
What appeared at first to be a worn premise turned into an interesting story of people suffering from their mistakes and overcoming them.
I found his book to have very interesting characters and a plot that keep keeps you reading. There are definitely surprises. I can recommend this book.
Extraordinary! So worth the read! Wonderful characters. Thoughtful, carefully plotted. A very different angle on an old trope.
The Road Leads Back by Marci Bolden was an emotional romance about second chances. Kara and Harry shared one unforgettable night, but family interference changed the course of what could have been their life. Even so, Kara powered on and managed to have a successful career and raise her son. When Harry sees her again decades later, he wants a chance to get to know the son he never knew about and spend time with Kara as well. Can they forgive those who hurt them in the past and find a new future together or is it too late? A sweet second chance romance with all the feels.
Happy reading!
Easy read, very enjoyable.
This was a joy to read!
An emotional story about finding your place in life when it seems that all you see around you is rejection. Kara considers herself a strong capable woman. She did what she had to do in order to raise her child to the best of her ability. What she did though might come across to some as flighty and sometimes irresponsible…especially to her now grown son. She constantly runs in order to find herself because she has trouble believing that anyone can want the quirkly person she is. Some things can’t be taken back and some circumstances must be faced in order to grow, to face a future that you deserve. Harry may or may not be that future, but he will do everything in his power to allow Kara to be the person she needs to be. I loved the story because the child is now grown, so the dynamics of the usual surprise baby story certainly change and evolve. Anyone who has a rocky relationship with their parents and their past will definitely see parts of themselves in this story…as I did. I look forward to more Stonehill stories in my future.
There is so much to love about this book, the characters are great, they are flawed and get things wrong but only want whats best. Kara has had it hard after raising her son Phil on her own with no family supporting her, while Harry had no clue what happened to the girl he was in love with at school. You go through an emotional roller coaster as Kara, Phil and Harry find their new places in life which is not an easy road for any of them but they all have a ray of sunshine and unicorns with Jess who makes you smile when ever she is around. This has definitely got me hooked on the series and can’t wait to dive into the next one!

The beginning of a new series called Stonehill a well written story. Kara Martinson after almost thirty yeas of raising her son Phil by herself she is having a gallery opening and who should come to it but Harry Canton Phil’s father. They find out a lot of things where kept from Harry by his parents. Harry now wants to get to know his son and Granddaughter who has Downs Syndrome. He asks the three of them to come back to his home so he can get to know his son and granddaughter. This is a story where there is a lot to be forgiven. A new Author to me. This was my first book by this author but definitely not the last! Kara and Harry had a one-night stand and when Harry left for college Kara was left with more than just memories. When she went to Harry’s mom she was turned away and ended up across the country and now almost 3o years later Harry has discovered he is a father of a grown son. Kara is an accomplished artist and has raised their son, Phil, who is also a father of a 7-year-old daughter, and when Harry shows up and wants to get to know his son and get re-acquainted with “the one who got away” he convinces Phil to move and wants Kara to “come home.” This is a beautifully written story full of healing and heart. Don’t miss this one!
Harry and Kara will have you in an emotional twist with their story. Their one night stand ended with both going separate ways but for Kara she was given a parting gift that had her parents disowning her. Now it’s almost thirty years since they have seen each other. Kara has come into her own with her art and her son is a grown man with a daughter of his own. Will her meeting with Harry be a second chance to get it right and have a happily ever after.
