Detective Peter Decker of the LAPD is stunned when he gets the report. Someone has shattered the sanctuary of a remote yeshiva community in the California hills with an unimaginable crime. One of the women was brutally raped as she returned from the mikvah, the bathhouse where the cleansing ritual is performed.
The crime was called in by Rina Lazarus, and Decker is relieved to discover that she … that she is a calm and intelligent witness. She is also the only one in the sheltered community willing to speak of this unspeakable violation. As Rina tries to steer Decker through the maze of religious laws the two grow closer. But before they get to the bottom of this horrendous crime, revelations come to light that are so shocking that they threaten to come between the hard-nosed cop and the deeply religious woman with whom he has become irrevocably linked.

Excellent book, Faye Kellerman is one of my favorite authors, her books keep you in suspense plus being very informative on the a Jewish religion. I strongly urge you to read her books.
Great mystery. The characters are great and the mystery keeps you guessing.
Well written and very readable.
I enjoy learning about the Jewish faith. Faye and Jonathan Kellerman are excellent authors. I love reading their books
I was spellbound by the suspenseful plot and had the extra benefit of learning much about Judaic rituals and beliefs.
Masterful story-telling! Besides being a suspenseful read, it opened my eyes to inside details of a culture I only thought I knew and gave me insight into the origins of my own Christian faith.
Great book! I’ve read it several times.
The plot was okay but there were so many references to Jewish customs and words that were in a foreign language that it was distracting to a non-Jewish reader as well as confusing because I couldn’t figure out the meaning of many phrases. I thought the writer could have explained the customs and language better so the reader didn’t feel excluded.
I’ve read other books in this series admittedly out of order when I came across them at the library. It was great to read this first in the series and see where the relationships started. Interesting read and great characters.
I was very interested in this book as it gives an insight into the religious Jewish life. If you have the same interest, then I would highly recommend this book and the series.
I enjoyed reading this book and thought the various plot twists kept it interesting. It was also informative and may help others to better understand a more strictly observant branch of Judaism, so that they are not just perceived as strange.
This is one of my favourite books. I learned so much about Jewish culture and rituals in a terrific whodunit. Lovely romance as well. A winner!
Interesting setting, lovely characters, sweet potential romance and unpredictable ending.
Very interesting and informative book about the developing relationship between a Hollywood area police detective and a religious Jewish widow who lives in a yeshiva. They are brought together by a rape that occurs just outside the ritual bathhouse where Rina works, leading her to call for help. Peter is the officer in charge of a series of …
Besides being a page turner mystery, learned a lot about Jewish religion.
Trying to read this book was like watching a foreign movie with sub titles. Too much work.
This was my introduction to Faith Kellerman. I am now a devoted fan.
The book expanded my knowledge of Jewish culture which was the most interesting aspect of the story. A quick read but fairly predictable.
Great book. Love the author
This is an informative mystery with well-developed characters and an outstanding description of the settings. It offers insight into the lifestyles of law officers and a sect of the Jewish people.
