NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This is Jeff Shaara at his best, giving us another superb [and] historically grounded novel of one of the most dramatic struggles of World War II.”—George McGovernUtilizing the voices of the conflict’s most heroic figures, some immortal and some unknown, Jeff Shaara tells the story of America’s pivotal role in World War II: fighting to hold back the Japanese conquest … back the Japanese conquest of the Pacific while standing side-by-side with her British ally, the last hope for turning the tide of the war against Germany. As British and American forces strike into the soft underbelly of Hitler’s Fortress Europa, the new weapons of war come clearly into focus.
In North Africa, tank battles unfold in a tapestry of dust and fire unlike any the world has ever seen. In Sicily, the Allies attack their enemy with a barely tested weapon: the paratrooper. As battles rage along the coasts of the Mediterranean, the momentum of the war begins to shift, setting the stage for the Battle of Normandy. The first book in a trilogy about the military conflict that defined thetwentieth century, The Rising Tide is an unprecedented and intimate portrait of those who waged this astonishing global war.

Another Shaara book that doesn’t disappoint. Shaara always enriches the general picture with reactions and insights from particular characters he’s chosen as commentators on the situation as a whole.
Shara’s books bring history alive in a unique manner. Well researched, easy to read and hard to put down.
a favorite author
It showed the personal side of the commanding generals on the African campaign and the invasion of Sicily. Obviously not a biography, but entertaining book of fiction based on the personalities and events of the campaign. Not an in depth action report of the battles.
The best of US historical fiction military history. Could almost be considered non-fiction considering his sources.
A novel about the North African campaign during World War II. A manly novel about men doing manly things.
This is a really good WW II historical novel. It faithfully relates the early war efforts in North Africa while making historical characters and added characters interesting and authentic. I especially enjoyed the building of Field Marshall Rommel’s character. If you like history, you’ll love this book.
He puts history in a readable interesting way.
I always enjoy reading Jeff Shaara’s works. I re-read this book as it’s a little understood time period of WW2 and this book offers gleaned personal and historical perspectives that can really enhace the understanding of the context of the times. In that regard, these books are worth reading to get more of a “flavor” of what things were like. The book is well-researced, well written, and informative. Highly recommended,
Outstanding!
Jeff Shaara makes history come alive. Excellent read
An insightful, behind-the-headlines look at the events surrounding the Allied invasion of North Africa, setting the stage for the drive on Italy.
Always a good history by this author
I found this tedious and dry.
Historical fiction at it’s best.
Excellent book about ww11
Jeff writes books that are historically accurate as far as the battles and dates. He puts you in the minds of the men who fought those battles, you know their fears and their hopes…
was really impressed with this book, highly recommend it for military readers
Like the way he fills in the probable conversations of the commanders.
Very well written book. If you like the history of WWII, this book is a required one on your shelf – after you’ve read it for the third time. It’s that good.
