The third volume in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them As the Shadow of Mordor grows across the land, the Companions of the Ring have become involved in separate adventures. Aragorn, revealed as the hidden heir of the ancient Kings of the West, has joined with the Riders … the West, has joined with the Riders of Rohan against the forces of Isengard, and takes part in the desperate victory of the Hornburg. Merry and Pippin, captured by Orcs, escape into Fangorn Forest and there encounter the Ents. Gandalf has miraculously returned and defeated the evil wizard, Saruman. Sam has left his master for dead after a battle with the giant spider, Shelob; but Frodo is still alive–now in the foul hands of the Orcs. And all the while the armies of the Dark Lord are massing as the One Ring draws ever nearer to the Cracks of Doom.
“A triumphant close . . . a grand piece of work, grand in both conception and execution. An astonishing imaginative tour de force.” – Daily Telegraph

This is the book I wish was twice as long…or 10x longer…or more. I never want to leave these characters and this place. Yes, Tolkien gifted us with appendices and family trees that helped fill the void left at the end of the trilogy. And yes, there is the background mythology of the Silmarillion, but my heart left with Frodo and I want to know …
Except to say that this book is a fitting end to this amazing trilogy is about all I can say. If you want to know what I thought about the characters, themes, setting, language it’s all in my reviews of the last 2 books.
That this trilogy was Tolkiens way of reminding us (because we often forget) what are best qualities are and that our humanity …
This is one of those books that was ruined (or at least seriously downgraded) by my enjoyment of the film version. Perhaps it speaks to the great accomplishment of the films more than anything else.
The story is much more nuanced and detailed in the book, going much further into the Hobbit’s world but at the same time it has so much detail in the …
Awesome conclusion to Tolkien’s trilogy. If you’ve never read the books but only watched the films, you’re missing out on so much! I love this tale and will re-read it again and again…
This is a wonderful series. Highly recommend this series
Enthralling, gets your imagination going.
Like with my “review” of the other books in this series, this is going to be less of a real review and more just my thoughts on my experience with this book. This is my first time through the trilogy, and I’m listening to the audiobooks, because I don’t think I’d make it through if I was reading. Also to reiterate–I have watched the movies …
Absolutely wonderful book with fantastic characters and tales of courage and perseverance.
The action during the series just kept building and building. Finally, in The Return of the King the series hits the final crescendo. This was a wonderful adventure series with a brilliant conclusion.
Nothing better – I’ve read tens of thousands of books & the Lord of the Rings gets 10*s! Best ever!
Loved entire series
This is the conclusion to the incredible classic that has shaped every fantasy book since its publication, and it doesn’t disappoint. The world of Middle Earth is opened once again to the faithful followers of the lore of the One Ring, and once again we are thrown into the war that will shape the world.
The first part focuses on Aragorn, …
What can I say. It’s Tolkien. The best author in history.
One of the most satisfying endings ever.
While The Return of the King is just as meandering and verbose as the first two, and I could still tune out for awhile and come back without missing much of anything, I still just love how this series makes me feel. All the description and detail is just the best. Also, I love Sam!!! He’s just so …
I enjoyed it but found it confusing at time. I would like to read it again after watching the movie again – I think it would be easier to follow…
It Tolkien what more can you say
Better than The Two Towers. Continuation of the saga. Good read. Good ending.
If you are a writer or a reader, LoTR is the starting point. Anything less isn’t worth the time to read. Tolkien set the bar high, and though some even many writers have surpassed it, it is still the measuring stick.
Tolkein isn’t the father of fantasy for nothing. He built an incredibly rich world and then inhabited it with fantastic, realistic (in fantasy), damaged and imperfect characters. A must for all fantasy lovers.
No one tells a story like Tolkien. Love the trilogy. Such an imagination! So many twists and turns and scares and surprises. Of the three, this is the most victorious. Leaves me wanting more of the characters and the adventures every time I read it (which is a lot).
