In the romantic tradition of Dear John, an injured Navy doctor meets two extremely important women whose secrets will change the course of his life in this #1 New York Times bestseller. Trevor Benson never intended to move back to New Bern, North Carolina. But when a mortar blast outside the hospital where he worked sent him home from Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated … Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated cabin he’d inherited from his grandfather seemed as good a place to regroup as any.
Tending to his grandfather’s beloved beehives, Trevor isn’t prepared to fall in love with a local . . . yet, from their very first encounter, Trevor feels a connection with deputy sheriff Natalie Masterson that he can’t ignore. But even as she seems to reciprocate his feelings, she remains frustratingly distant, making Trevor wonder what she’s hiding.
Further complicating his stay in New Bern is the presence of a sullen teenage girl, Callie, who lives in the trailer park down the road. Trevor hopes Callie can shed light on the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather’s death, but she offers few clues–until a crisis triggers a race to uncover the true nature of Callie’s past, one more intertwined with the elderly man’s passing than Trevor could ever have imagined.
In his quest to unravel Natalie and Callie’s secrets, Trevor will learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness . . . and that in life, to move forward, we must often return to the place where it all began.

just started a few days ago not loving it yet. and i usually love his books
Nicholas Sparks doesn’t disappoint in this one. Absolutely kept me turning the pages! Characters were relatable and likable!
typical Sparks book. well wrirren with wonderful characters
Loved everything about this book!
Loved learning about bees and hives during a romance with first person a male!
I dearly love all of Nicholas Sparks books!
Not my favorite of N. Sparks books but it was a unique story and wonderful characters. A little mystery and romance and tragedy all in one story that makes you not able to put the book down. I enjoyed learning about bees and honey collection also gave the story something extra enjoyable
It was okay, not really my favorite from him.
Nickolas Sparks’ The Return flowed logically and smoothly with wonderful surprises and tension along the way. Trevor Benson is a lovable, flawed character with a huge heart trying to settle his beloved grandfather’s estate in a small town. The locals cannot explain why grandfather died so far from home, but Trevor pursues the mystery. Believable, complex characters energize the story.
Another heartwarming peek into the soul by Author Nickolas Sparks.
An especially good Nickolas Sparks novel. It’s obvious he did lots of research on bee keeping, PTSD, war injuries, the long road to recovery, and psychiatry before writing this novel. As always his plot was gripping and his characters well developed.
I found the mystery part pretty good, but things were to long and drawn out. I was a little disappointed in the romance part, it was very lacking. In my opinion Trevor was too pushy with Natalie. I didn’t get the instant love thing, I just didn’t feel it. Even with all the things not right with the story, I still cried. Overall it’s okay, but too long. In my opinion not Nicholas Sparks best. I read from Broward County Library.
Awesome book!
This book is enjoyable to read even though it doesn’t stand out among the others I’ve read recently.
3/22/21 – As amazing as every other Nicholas Sparks book. He is a fantastic author that builds amazing characters with great stories to tell. Though the romance in this one was different than others, it was equally as amazing and powerful. I couldn’t put it down.
It took me awhile to decide to listen to this one as there are so many mixed reviews. But I have found I still love Nicholas Sparks books. I think there has only been one I did not care for. Yes the writing style has changed a bit but I think that’s a good thing. I like the stories and this one I could not stop listening to. A young girl who is closed off and a trip his grandfather was making is the center of the story. I really couldn’t stop listening as the clues unraveled. Just a tad of romance sweetens it. Great narrators did an excellent job.
Nicholas Sparks captures the small town community feel in this book as it occurs in New Bern, NC. I usually am very captivated with books written by this author but this book did not draw me in as much. I found Trevor to be an endearing character but his friendship with Natalie felt too forced. Trevor’s obstacles and his techniques to help guide himself through were important to read for anyone and were very timely for the current day. I also found his drive to want to help the community members to be heartwarming as he hadn’t known them very well but was still ready to jump on in.
I enjoy a story with a wounded hero, and ‘The Return’ delivers Trevor, formerly a Naval surgeon who served in Afghanistan, and two very interesting heroines, both carrying guilt over their families. While aspects of the story were predictable, I enjoyed how the mystery surrounding why Trevor’s 91-year-old grandfather had travelled so far from home was slowly teased out by Trevor. Even though his grandfather was deceased when the story began, their relationship felt strong and special throughout, and the bees and the boat were tangible reminders of the bond they had shared.
Highly recommended.
Great book
The Return by Nicholas Sparks was a thought provoking read. It is the story of a disabled veteran, a young runaway and a deputy sheriff. What will happen when their lives intersect? Another winner for Nicholas Spark
Very good, but not N. Sparks best. Predictable for the most part.
