Blood is thicker than oil–until murder is involved. Fenway Stevenson doesn’t want to return to the coastal town where her estranged father is practically king. But the death of her mother draws her back home–and the murder of the county coroner draws her into a deepening conspiracy. As the body count rises and all signs seem to point toward her father’s oil company, will Fenway uncover the … uncover the truth before family bonds become deadly?

I enjoyed the book. It kept my interest and I couldn’t wait to get back to it. I was a little disappointed that towards the end the editing seemed to end and there were incorrect words in sentences. I would still read the next one and hope the editing had improved.
loved it!
Intriguing story with great characters.
The book was well crafted with good character development until 2/3 of the way. It was interesting until Fenway slept with the sheriff. It fell apart then. All the character development became trite and the story ridiculous.
Rewrite it from that point.
I loved the pace of the story. Great flow. Believable characters, imperfect and strong.
I wasn’t too sure about this series of books when I first started reading them but by the time I got through this first book I was hooked and I ordered the whole series. I’m working my way through them, I believe I’m on the third book now, and it just aggravates the crap out of me when I have to put it down.
How could you not love a main character named Fenway, (yes after the park)? She becomes a coroner of a small California town where her estranged father is often referred to as the “Owner.” Her prep has been her work, almost done, in her nursing degree and a keen mind, staunch independence, and the ability to learn from her mistakes: and there are a lot of them. It’s a fun read. You’ll find yourself rooting for her all the way to the end, trying to find out who murdered her predecessor.
Very well written. Love this series. Great characters.
Would have been just as good without the sex between a married man and the protagonist.
Good read
I’m not quite finished with it but it’s a good, fun read.
Definitely kept my interest!!!! Great story!
This book is well written and keeps you interested in each step of the new coroner’s investigation. Believable characters with humor attached; always a plus in a mystery story. I look forward to the next in this series.
Started reading this book and didn’t get up until I finished it. Great read!!
Wow! What a first day on the job!
Fenway Stevenson is lucky to find a job her first day in town but she wasn’t expecting to be appointed the new coroner and her first assignment is to find out who murdered the old coroner. It’s hard to make friends when everyone is a suspect.
Paul Austin Ardoin really knocked it out of the park for me with this story! This is a great start to the series. I really enjoyed the interactions between the characters; even the stressful ones. There is good humor, good suspense, a hint at romance, and an excellent crime mystery plot. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
This has a strong female character that I really enjoyed reading and was rooting for until…she knowingly slept with a married man. I totally lost respect for her then and there. Bummer.
What a great book. I really enjoyed the characters and Fenway is amazing. I live in the Sacramento area and love reading stories about locations in northern California. This one is great. It is thrilling, suspenseful and very hard to put down.
This is a terrific thriller mystery. There’s lots of action, danger and suspense, all in Fenway’s first week of work.. I loved the characters and the interaction between them all. It’s unputdownable, enjoyable, entertaining reading.
I found this story very interesting. I learn ed things I didn’t know about coroners. I liked learning how they help solve crimes. I like CSI shows so maybe that’s why I liked this. I didn’t guess who did it until the end. I liked that Fenway finally got a reason as to why her Dad ignored her after the divorce
I loved this book, especially the main character, Fenway! The book is easy to read and leads you on an exciting journey with twists and turns. It kept me guessing until the very end.
Fenway was raised by her mother and rarely had anything to do with her father, so it was a surprise when she was asked to temporarily fill in for the coroner of Estacia, CA where her father lives (and more or less runs the town). She has one more class to finish to get her forensic degree, but she jumps right in. The people she works with are used to a laid back coroner who didn’t work too hard. Fenway insists that she be involved in everything and presents theories for the problems in the department and the death of the last coroner.
I’ve already bought the next two books in the series and look forward to learning more about Fenway and the others she works with.
