Little Red Riding Hood is heading back into the woods to meet the big bad wolves … But she’s not little anymore.Having survived a childhood attack from a savage wolf, 16-year old Helena Basque remains disfigured with triple scars across her face. Bullied and plagued by nightmares of a supernatural wolf that spoke and stood upright, Helena urges others to teach her how to hunt and defend herself. … herself. When she sees no help coming from the French government or her local priest to stop the killings, Helena sets out on her own to destroy the wolves.
Armed with a repeating crossbow and other unique weapons, she takes a stand against the creatures, donning a red cloak like the one she was once forbidden to wear. Isolated and determined, Helena wages a one-girl war against the monsters, refusing to surrender or slow down until she destroys every last one of them.
Come along for the ride.

I came into this story not knowing what to expect, but sort of thinking it would be “just another” fairy tale retelling. Instead, it’s a slam bang of a tale, full of grit and fire and fight and excitement, coupled with a young woman’s struggle to be brave in the face of horrific fear. I really, really enjoyed the book’s vivid descriptions. Overall, this is just a fresh, fantastic take on an old story. Can’t wait for the sequels.
The best book I read recently. The history is so well done, and give another look of the Grim’s Brother fairytale. 😉
Helena is a realistic heroine with fears and insecurity.
I started my reading and if I didn’t have anything more to do, I probably could read all book in a day, because it’s a reading holds you and makes you lose track of time.
I’m curious of the second book, what Helena will do with the Lycanthru? Will she meet another wolf as Grenault?
Starting now, the second book to discover it. 😉
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Thrilling
I was given an ARC for an honest review of this novella. The action was thrilling, strong storyline and protagonist. Other than wanting more, I enjoyed this read.
This book, just wow! This re-imagined take on Little Red Riding Hood just blew me away. The world building was excellent. The characters are compelling. The writing is terrific. The plot is wonderfully imaginative. When I finished this story, I just had to say wow. This book is so worth the time to read it. It ticked all five of my boxes for a book and deserves every one of those stars. For the record, I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book with the request to leave an honest review for other potential readers. Let me tell you, if you like action, suspense and a new take on an old story, this book is definitely for you.
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
“The Red Rider” is an intriguing reimagining of the tale “Little Red Riding Hood”. Well, more of an extension of that story since Dunn’s retelling begins after the events in the original children’s story.
This book also asks the questions “What if the Big Bad Wolf wasn’t a true wolf, wasn’t a lone wolf, and what if the Big Bad Wolf wasn’t the biggest, or baddest wolf in the neighbourhood?”
Q: Who is the Big Bad Wolf(pack) afraid of?
A: “The Red Rider”!!…
Can Helena, the little girl that becomes “The Red Rider”, prevail despite all of the betrayals, losses and heartbreaks that happen to her, with the odds stacked heavily against her?
I strongly urge you to get a copy of this book and find out for yourself!
In the interest of transparency: I was given a copy of this book. This is my own honest opinion.
Red Riding Hood is one kick *** heroine!
I don’t think I can view the fairy tales of my childhood in the same way ever again! From a series of horrible losses blamed on wolves, “Red” has to pull herself up from the lowest of the lows. Her entire family has been stalked and murdered, as well as a close friend of the family. The wolves are not normal in that “Red” has heard them speak and walk on two legs. But she will not be deterred in her search for revenge. GO GET ‘EM RED!!
