Marie Carrington is running from a host of bad memories. Broke and desperate, she’s hoping to find safety and sanctuary on Prince Edward Island, where she reluctantly agrees to help decorate a renovated bed-and-breakfast before it opens for prime tourist season.Seth Sloane didn’t move three thousand miles to work on his uncle’s B&B so he could babysit a woman with a taste for expensive … expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her. He came to help restore the old Victorian–and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart.
The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just two months will take everything they’ve got. Can these two wounded souls find hope, healing, and perhaps a bit of romance on this beautiful island?
Step into the Red Door Inn, a lovely home away from home tucked along the north shore of fabled Prince Edward Island. It’s a place where the wounded come to heal, the broken find forgiveness, and the lonely find a family. Won’t you stay for the season?

If you have ever had the urge to run away from your problems into the world of books, you will have something in common with Marie. After overhearing her father use her trauma as a bargaining chip in a business deal, Marie takes $300 out of an ATM and takes off for Prince Edward Island in Canada. Hoping to find some of the peace Anne found at Green Gables, she finds herself at the ferry without the means to pay for the ferry ticket to finish her journey. Seeing the desperation in her face, Jack pays for her ticket and offers her a job rehabbing and decorating an inn on the island. Jack, his contractor nephew Seth, the local baker Caden, and Aretha the antiques dealer all work together to see the inn open in time for tourist season. As they restore the Red Door Inn, the house starts restoring all of them. This is one of those feel good stories about how families can be built with the grace of God. Can’t wait for book two!
Great story line
Marie and Seth are an unlikely pair of wounded hearts who both end up on Prince Edward Island…both working on the Red Door Inn to get it ready to open in only two months. Marie has a definite eye for expensive antiques which will bring new life back to the inn. Seth only wants to help his uncle and have time to heal. Will they be able to finish the inn on time? Will they both find what they are looking for? This is a great read and I enjoyed it very much!!
Felt like I was on Prince Edwards Island with great characters. Well written.
I couldn’t put it down
I loved this book. It had so much heart. The characters were engaging and there was a depth of feeling about them. Sometimes they made me smile and sometimes they brought tears to my eyes. I loved how the story was woven around one man’s dream and the hope of two other characters. A must read.
Ahh….Prince Edward Island… a comfortable bed and breakfast; a cozy bakery; the calming, continuous presence of the seaside. You are calling my name.
The Red Door Inn by Liz Johnson is a refreshing, entertaining contemporary romance novel about God’s love, kindness, and tender mercy to one of His daughters who needs a safe place.
Marie Carrington from Boston goes to Prince Edward Island for safety. She finds more in this safe haven than she ever imagined. Love and true friendships await her in the midst of island breezes, fun times, and plain, hard work on a bed and breakfast.
At the center of this novel we have this cozy bed and breakfast called The Red Door Inn. Marie is the decorator, Seth Sloane, the renovator; and Seth’s uncle, Jack Sloane, the owner, is the glue that keeps everything together. This successful team works well together, after a rocky start getting the bed and breakfast up and running. Hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, and any hospitality areas are among my top favorite subjects to read. This subject is what mainly drew me to read this novel. There’s something exciting and invigorating about this environment and The Red Door Inn invites us to take part in this adventure.
Marie Carrington is a lovely heroine and I like how she is different than the majority of fiction heroines. She is a quiet, introverted woman, but can be more outgoing and light on occasion. Marie carries a burden that weighs on her emotionally and causes her to have panic attacks. My heart hurt for her pain and struggles. Liz Johnson writes in a respectful manner and with a tenderness that draws the reader to empathize with victims in these situations.
Decorating spaces is Marie’s talent. Her decorating abilities are inspiring. I am not a decorator, but reading about her job makes me want to try my hand at staging a room or home. Some authors never let us travel with the characters to work, but this one does! I enjoyed Ms. Johnson’s allowing us to visit the antique store and attend an auction with the heroine. These kind of scenes help us get to know the character and feel a part of the action in the novel.
Seth Sloane [Every time I read that last name I think of Charlie Sloane of Anne of Green Gables] the hero, is a great guy. Of course he is handsome and muscular, but I like how he wasn’t immediately attracted to Marie and vice versa. It gave the reader something to look forward to when they realized that they did love each other. They had to get to know one another first and weren’t half in love because of looks. Another thing I appreciated is how Seth acts like a normal guy. He isn’t perfect and does not automatically read the heroine’s thoughts. Seth also isn’t educated in the art of decorating in the least and wants his own cinnamon roll. 🙂 (Read the book and you will find out about the cinnamon rolls.)
Good friends are difficult to gain and keep, but the supporting characters in The Red Door Inn are the true kind. Jack, Aretha, and Caden each bring their individual talents and light to the lives of the community. Liz Johnson made them interesting without taking center stage.
Liz Johnson has let us be a part of this entertaining adventure and I look forward to the next books in this series with anticipation. The Red Door Inn is waiting for us to procure a room, partake of a delicious repast, and experience pleasurable relaxation at our home away from home.
This was a great story and really inspirational!
I enjoyed a light read. I was tired of mysteries and who done its. It was a feel good book and was fun to read a book about Nova Scotia.
A well written book that demonstrates how giving of ourselves can heal emotional wounds.
I loved it enough to order the other two books in the series.
The first in the series. Loved every page of all 3 books.
Heart warming story. Well written.
Sweet little story!
Ohhhh this beauty. I love this series. I have read all of them that are currently released (up to Sept. 2017) and each and every one of them are special, beautiful gems. Relatable characters that you’ll find endearing, exciting plot with a great story, and a beautiful writing style that will make sure you really feel like you know these people, that you’re in PEI and this is happening right in front of you. So incredible. You have to read this series, but warning! I think you’ll have to visit Prince Edward Island after this. I think I left a part of my heart there, and I only visited through this book (and through Anne, of course!) What are you doing still reading this review?! Go and buy this book and read it already! Come on!
Really enjoyed the relationships in this story
A little too predictable

A very original plot. I love the interesting characters in this book. I think I want a red door!
