In the swamps of New Orleans sits an old church. Its history is steeped in blood and death. For over a century, this abandoned church has inspired fear, and the rumors of the creatures that inhabit it have kept the locals away. The church has been sold, but work on the property has stalled. Centuries-old fears resurface when accidents start to befall the construction crews and ghosts are seen … and ghosts are seen wandering the derelict stone building. No one dares go back until the property has been cleansed.
The Hathaway Foundation is hired to rid the property of ghosts so that work can begin again, only Emma Crane soon discovers it’s not the ghosts they have to fear, but something far more evil.
There was a reason the church was abandoned, a reason a powerful protection spell was put around the property, and a reason everyone from her father’s priest to Silas, her demonic grandfather, is warning her to stay away.
But now that she’s discovered what roams the halls, she can’t walk away. She can’t be responsible for innocents dying when she might have prevented it.
She’ll gather her team and go up against something she thought existed only in books and movies, something even the hunters in the area fear—a primordial evil, a creature that spawned the first vampires.
But can she stop the creature before it’s too late, before its family destroys hers?

4.5 Cranky Stars
I have loved this series since book one which then made me go binge the series these are a spinoff from. It was a glorious binge session with my favorite living reaper with many other talents Mattie Louise Hathaway AKA Emma Rose Crane.
In the Red Church Emma is off with her family and friends to investigate the Red Church. A New Orleans church with a dark history that was to never be sold to the general public. Now Emma must face an ancient evil in which no one has ever encountered or if they have, they aren’t alive to tell you about it. This book is so much more than killing the creepy crawlies it’s also about Emma starting to accept herself and the new life she has. She will never be the prim and proper society darling her grandmother would love her to be but Emma is a force made up of ghost matter and other things at home In a pair of jeans and a t shirt. She is loved by those around her even Officer Dan who is also on a new adventure.
The Red Church has such amazing supporting characters such as Mary and Eric and Ethan. I even love Cass and let me say when I read his parts in his Cajun accent I heard them the right way for I am also a New Orleans girl through and through. Oh that ending….sigh. I can’t wait for more adventures from this group.
I don’t do spoilers if I can avoid it. I LOVED THIS BOOK! If you didn’t start with ghost files: START FROM THE BEGINNING! WORTH EVERY MINUTE and $! So my vague shouting of happiness! Sups are all real! New sups! Emma/Mattie and Dan!!! I love Mary she’s so cute! Nathaniel is still sketchy. Eric and Ethan need to hook up in this next book. Yes yes yes! I want more Craine diaries after this book! #ghostdemongodess
Mattie/Emma gets roped into helping her friend Cass to de-ghost an old abandon church. But with everything Mattie come across. It’s never that easy, and she finds more trouble than she realizes.
This is one of the best in the series. Full of surprises, and mystery. It has a few errors, but it doesn’t take away from the story. If you’ve loved Matties story in the past. You’re really going to love this one!
I have been hooked since Ghost Files. I tried to take my time, but it was so good that I couldn’t. I love everything about Emma and Dan and her extended family. This was one adventure I’m going to have to read again!
I am I die hard Apryl Baker fan – especially the Ghost Files and now the Crane Diaries. I love how the characters have evolved and matured through the series. The story draws you in and captivates you. I didn’t want to put it down! Red Church has suspense, drama, intrigue, romance (Emma style!) and action. You can’t ask for more. If you want a book (or series) that you can’t get enough of and actually feel for the characters and care about their world, Red Church is a book for you. I highly recommend Red Church and all of Apryl’s books.
mma has come so far since her Ghost Files days. In this book she goes up against something purely evil and no one believes she is prepared for it. She has grown tremendously as a person and in her gifts. We get to see more into the relationship between her and Silas and why he treats her the way he does. This really is an amazing book!
I have been following Mattie Hathaway since I read Ghost Files. What a great series. I was so excited when Apryl Baker decided to start a new series when that one was finished. Now I know Mattie as Emma Crane. She is more grownup and is experiencing more grownup adventures. I love all the characters in these series and I can’t wait to see where they go! Can’t wait for the next book
Emma and her team are hired to clear a church so it can be taken care of but what she finds has her so worried about anyone else being there ,
Each one of the books in this series has let you see more and more of what Emma is made of and just how strong she can be.
The danger is there for everyone who she loves and even those she doesn’t even know , it is up to Emma to make it save again
I have been a fan of Mattie/Emma since the Ghost Files n have loved the series, I tend to get sad once im done reading because I want more, can’t wait for the next one, keep them coming Apryl..definately a must read
This series keeps getting better and better. I literally sat on the edge of my seat the entire time reading this book.
Just when I think Apryl can’t outdo herself, she does. This book was so amazing. I could not put it down. I cannot wait to see what’s in store next for Mattie and Officer Dan!
ust when you think it can’t get any better. Apryl does it again! I have loved these books from the first one. And honestly didn’t know how they could get any better but they do. I love the characters they are all well written. The books suck you in and keep you there until the very end. Anxiously awaiting more!
Mattie/Emma’s story just keeps getting better and better. I love the growth of the character. We’ve watched her grow from a snarky foster kid to an amazing woman that’s all about protecting innocent people while protecting her loved ones as well and this book does not disappoint. I finished the book in one sitting and am rereading it again! Great job Apryl!!
This is the next installment of Emma’s (Mattie’s) story. I want to say so much but I don’t want to giveaway and spoilers either. First, let me start by saying that I adore all of the cast of characters in this series and I love that each book gives us one more layer to their identities as well as their relationships. The story always evolves at a steady but logical pace. I am thrilled to get more backstory for some of the characters as well as getting an introduction to some new players. Second, I can’t tell you how much I love that this spin-off series has taken us to NOLA (which is what I call my soul city). I love that each story includes snippets of the character of the city and it’s rich history and design.
So, the Red Church opens with Emma establishing the Hathaway Foundation to aid hunters and taking her first paid job to see that they ensure funding. Of course with Emma and the crew, no case is as simple as it sounds and this is so much more than clearing a ghost problem from an old building. This is a building steeped in mystery and danger. Everyone is deadset against Emma and the gnag working on this project but Emma can’t let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak, because she can’t live with the idea that innocents might die because of it. We get to see her working more with her family and her extended family. Full of twists and turns, danger and adventuer, emotional outpouring and more. Epic tale and I can’t wait to see where we journey to next with little Ms . Crane and her rag-tag band of brothers and sisters. Excellent read!!
This book was so amazing. I tried to take my time reading it so that it would last longer…I really did. But darn it! Apryl always pulls me in, just sucks me right into her brilliant mind and her amazingly creative stories. I loved The Ghost Files and I absolutely adore Matties more adult adventure as they continue in The Crane Diaries. Thanks again Apryl for another awesome read. You never disappoint!
This series just gets better with each new book. I have been following Mattie/Emma’s journey and it is amazing to see her grow and develop with each book! With The Red Church, we get to see a very decisive and in control Mattie… trying to write the review without spoilers is challenging lol… read it.. you will love it… especially the ending 🙂
This book is absolutely amazing. It never fails to keep you entertained and intrigued. I wait on pins and needles because Apryl’s books are the best and this one did not disappoint.
Once again April Baker did not disappoint. This book is a wonderful addition to “The Crane Diaries”. Emma is back at it again. New characters equal new adversities. New adversities equal new adventures. Love it love it love it.
Apryl has done it yet again. The red church is such a great addition to the crane diaries. To watch Emma/Mattie grow up from the ghost files to the crane diaries is like being part of her world, I love it. Also to add in the other characters (not spoiling it) makes this one of the more unique books she has so far.
