Sergeant Wade McKinnon knows who killed Samantha the moment he arrives at her crime scene. Problem is, he watched her killer die a year ago. A year after serial killer Michael Rhodes is executed and allowed to donate part of his brain as an organ transplant, Wade gets called to a murder scene that shares uncanny similarities to those of the late Michael Rhodes. Other similar killings happen … killings happen around Seattle, and Wade seems to be the only person still alive who knows enough about Michael Rhodes’s murders to be able to replicate them. When evidence found at one of the crime scenes points to Wade as the killer, he races to find the real culprit before it’s too late to clear his own name.
Elle is overjoyed when her husband, Brian, receives a lifesaving organ transplant. Their lives seem to return to normal, but Elle notices a disturbing change in Brian’s behavior. When Elle learns that her husband’s organ donor was Michael Rhodes, she fears that Brian now has the mind of a serial killer.
The Recipient is a chilling crime thriller mixed with domestic suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Praise for The Recipient:
“A chilling debut suspense thriller that blends a clinical murder know-how with riveting characters against a brooding Seattle backdrop. Audrey J. Cole squirrels deep into a serial killer’s mind and the at-times fractured minds of those who seek justice for the killer’s crimes. A perfect read for fans of Rachel Abbott or The Couple Next Door.” Lizzie Harwood, Amazon bestselling author
“It’s been a while since I read through a racy and pacy thriller, served piping hot in Robin Cook style… The blurb got me hooked, and I couldn’t put this book down until I finished it.” SiMPLiREAD Book Review
“Once The Recipient got its claws in me it didn’t want to let go. The Recipient is filled with so many twist and turns that it will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more and just waiting to see want is around the next corner. I can’t wait to read more in the Emerald City Thrillers series.” The Avid Reader Book Review

The Seattle Serial killer is at it again or that is what it looks like when Sergeant Wade McKinnon is called to investigate a crime scene. The only problem is that our serial killer was executed a little more than a year ago. So who is this mysterious killer that is on the loose? Wade is called to help solve the crime as he was the officer in charge and helped to put Michael Rhodes behind bars and probably knows more than anyone else about the Seattle Slasher. The evidence is plying up and it is pointing toward our very own Sergeant McKinnon. Who is this copycat killer? Is it Sergeant McKinnon?
Elle’s husband Brian suffered a stroke at the young age of thirty-seven which left him a drooling mess of his former self. Elle is ecstatic when Brian receives a partial brain transplant and is then able to return to his former self and his job. But when Brian starts to act differently and not like himself at all Elle becomes concerned about her husband especially when he starts lying to her about where he is and comes home late. When Brian’s late nights start coinciding with the same nights when the Seattle Slashers strikes Elle starts putting two and two together and starts to wonder if her husband could be involved somehow. Is Brian the copycat killer?
When I read the summary of The Recipient I thought now that sounds very interesting and intriguing. It did not disappoint in the least. Actually it was way more than I ever expected. I couldn’t stay away from it I would lay it down to do some blogging or other things but the next thing I knew I had my kindle opened again. Once The Recipient got its claws in me it didn’t want to let go. The Recipient is filled with so many twist and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more and just waiting to see want is around the next corner. I can’t wait to read more in the Emerald City Thrillers series.
I would recommend The Recipient to anyone who loves a good mystery, thriller or suspense. Come join Sergeant McKinnon to find out who the copycat killer is.
This review is for the audio book.
Wow, this is the first book I have read/heard from this author but it won’t be the last. I loved it even though I suspected who the killer was the author was still clever enough that she still got an ‘a har’ moment out of me. I liked the characters and it did keep me guessing if I was right. The story is told by several of the characters but it worked and wasn’t jumpy in the telling.
Sergeant Wade McKinnon is called in to look at a dead body found in a hotel room. As soon as he enters he know this is not going to be an ordinary or easy case because he had all ready caught the killer and watched him die by leathal injection.
Battling demons of his past he once again has to catcher what he hopes won’t be a prolific serial killer and re visit the worst case of his career. Then another body is found, closer to home this time but with no evidence and the killings exactly the same he starts to wonder if it’s a copy cat or did they get the right man in the first place.
At the same time Elle is worried her husband is having an affair, late nights at work and smelling perfume on him. When she talks to her sister we explains that after a brain transplant it is normal for the person to be different and give it time. Elle can’t give it up he is just acting to weird, then she discovers who the transplant came from and being afraid of an affair is the least of her worries.
I really liked the production of this audio book with the use of a male and female narrator it really made the story enjoyable and brought the characters to life in my mind.
Over all a great book and a must listen.
I thought I knew what was going on…until the big twist. This is the kind of book I love! Well done!
I am actually reading the Emerald City series of 5, and this is the first one in the series. If the others are anything like this one, it will be hard to put them down! You can read the synopsis, so I won’t repeat the gist of the story. If you like serial killer mysteries, I recommend this one that takes some unexpected turns.
I don’t usually read thrillers, but this one I couldn’t put down. Tons of ups and downs along with secrets to uncover. This was a very interesting thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
What a page turner! Author Cole expertly wrote a thriller with captivating characters and believable scenes. In this story, instead of wondering who the killer is, we the reader think we found out early. But is it really that person? Cole defies cliches by making it less about WHO did it and more about WHY.
We get a carefully crafted flashback that helps us understand who the Slasher was, and how he was caught. But now there are more deaths, so is there a copycat killer? I loved how Elle worked through her suspicions, and the ending was inspired. I couldn’t stop reading this book. Its compelling, and written well with no obvious typos to distract. Author Cole has become a force in thriller writing.
The Recipient (Emerald City Thriller #1) was another great read by Audrey J. Cole. Wade is a police Sergeant that knows who killed Samantha but the problem is that the killer died a year ago. Michael Rhodes was executed and allowed to donate part of his brain for an organ transplant. Wade comes to the scene of a crime that replicates Michael’s murders. But evidence is found at the crime scene that points to Wade as the killer. He must now race to find the culprit so he can clear his name. Elle was happy that her husband received a partial brain transplant, until she finds out that his brain cells came from a serial killer. This was a good book and I can’t wait to read more by the author.
