Hunted, shot, and without her memory, eighteen-year-old Ann Baker wakes in shallow water on a deserted Pacific Northwest island. She is soon approached by two young men claiming to be her friends. Something isn’t right, but when gunshots sound, Ann is left with little choice but to allow Devon and Archer to help her escape. Soon she finds herself in their North Bend mountain compound, where the … the higher evolved humans claim to be mind-readers. While Ann heals, she realizes they believe her to be one of the last and most powerful of all – The Lost One.
She’s welcomed by most with opened arms, but not everyone is happy about her arrival. A jealous adversary has plans for Ann, which spirals the entire Reader community into chaos.
As lies, murder, and betrayal threaten to rip apart the once harmonious mountain dwellers, Ann is thrust into making a decision that could save or devastate not only The Readers, but all of mankind. But there’s just one glitch: by doing so it may require her to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Riveting and incredibly fast-paced, The Reader delivers a non-stop action ride that keeps the reader entertained and enthralled by the story and the characters. That is probably the best facet of this story, the pace because Harkins can do what many people cant, which is squeeze is massive amounts of history without bogging down the pace of the story or distracting the reader. Harkins approaches her storytelling the way she approaches it regarding Ann. She does not know much, and she has to learn a lot in a small amount of time, so Harkins gives the Ann the cliff notes version of history which is essential. Some authors do not do that which does not work out to well because unless it is essential, it can just make the story drag out. Here Harkins breaks up the history with tension, with a descriptive narrative of what the world is like in the present. So, with the break history lessons broken up by action and character dynamics, it makes for a great read because the story keeps up the momentum while also building up this world for the reader, a world that the reader can understand and get to know.
Some slight problems go hand in hand with the pace of the novel, but ultimately, they are minimal. It just follows the ending. The resolution was so quick; it happened in a snap and the redemption of the villain, it moves like a flick of a switch that their loyalties, it is uneasy to see a villain switch over so quickly without really understanding the motive. It was just too quick, the ending, and could have used a tad more action and character development here.
Nevertheless, it is a good novel. There is a small cast of characters that allows the reader to get to know each of these characters and how they fit with one another. There isn’t much room for character growth in this novel, but the way they all fit together and influence each other is what makes it fun and makes the reader invested in them.
Ultimately, this is just a quick read. It offers a great story that moves effortlessly with a quick pace that keeps the reader engrossed in the story and action of it all.
The Reader is a paranormal YA by M.K. Harkins and the first book in The Immortal series. Ann wakes up on a beach with no memory of how she got there or if the two guys there are actually her friends or not. When Archer and Devon take her back to a compound to heal she discovers everyone there has extraordinary abilities and she just might be the most special of them all. This was a great book, there was action, suspense and a love triangle that will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting to know how it will all play out! I have enjoyed other books by M.K. Harkins before so I was excited to read this book and it didn’t disappoint! I especially enjoyed the secondary characters and really hope you get to know more about them as the series progresses. I highly recommend this book to paranormal romance fans!
The Reader by M. K. Harkins The Immortal Series Book One
5 stars!
Ann has no memory of her past. She is taken in by a group of people who call themselves the Readers. They have lived for centuries and are immortal. They also believe Ann is the Lost One, a very powerful Reader who will change their world when she is bonded with her soulmate. There are four different individuals who could possibly fill that role and they all have to see if they have a connection. With the Jacks attempting to steal her new friends work to keep her safe while also helping to restore her memory.
I loved Ann’s character as well as her friends Archer, Devon, and Lucy. They help her so much with the memory loss and the loss of her family. I also loved the excitement the storyline had and how easily it flowed. I could not put this book down.
The Reader by M.K. Harkins is the first book in The Immortal Series. A unique story that captures your attention effortlessly.
Imagine waking up with no memory. Bow imagine the reason for that being that you were shot. And then imagine being approached by two strangers claiming to be your friend. Would you trust them? Would you believe what they were telling you? Or would you question everything? Ann has to make that decision when she finds herself in this exact situation. She knows that hot everything is as it seems and yet she has no choice but to trust the two men.
Only Ann then finds out that everyone believes she is something more, some special – the last of the Lost Ones. Only she still can’t remember anything. But when someone out to get her she has to try and find a way to recall her past, before it catches up to her.
This book was such a good read. My interested was piqued from the moment I read the blurb. I already at that point knew I had to find out what was going on and who Ann was. The start of the book just hooked me even further. I couldn’t help but try to work it all out, to put the pieces together. The writing style was brilliant. The book was well paced throughout, fast and intense where it was needed and slower and more descriptive where applicable. It had everything you could want for this kind of book. A great read and I am looking forward to more from this series.
The Reader was an interesting 4 star read.
Ann wakes up on a beach with no memory of who she is and a gunshot wound to her arm. She ends up meeting Devon and Archer who were sent to find her and bring her safely back to the compound where doc can help her.
Both Devon and Archer definitely have different personalities. Devon was standoffish and short with Ann and Archer was charming and helpful. As I got to know them better and we learned more about Ann and the Readers, I understood some things even more.
Ann starts to have memory flashes here and there. I had a lol moment during the “rat” scene. Ann eventually gets confronted and threatened by someone who has some jealousy issues with her.
There are some twists, turns and a love triangle. This was a quick read with a good storyline. The secondary characters were great, my most favorite character was Lucy, her personality was bouncy and fun. I really enjoyed this book, although while reading I felt some similarities to some other books I’ve read. If your looking for some action and heart stopping moments this would be a good read for you. I actually would love to see more from all of these characters, maybe some history on them. Can’t wait to see what’s coming next from M.K. Harkins.
This was quite a departure from MK Harkins typical sweet romance novels that she usually pens. There was some romance though, don’t get me wrong, quite the flirtation with a love triangle there that kept the reader on its toes guessing who our main gal, Ann, would choose to be with, it just wasn’t the focal point of the novel. Actually, that would be one of my reasoning’s behind a lower scoring of the novel. I was just a bit confused as to where exactly this was supposed to be as far as a categorized novel. I wouldn’t say it was dystopian. It was more so set in our world. It had that feel of a sci-fi to it that really kicked off toward the end and culminated. I just was a bit lost throughout and felt like it never really hit that spot. (For lack of better words.) I think maybe if this was to be a series or even a small collection of novellas, Harkins would have had more of the time frame to spread the story out and give us those details that were missing that would have made the story a bit more dimensional. It felt as if this was a rush to fit a lot of story into 250 pages. Of course, this is just a personal opinion. Having read all of Harkins romance novels, I have loved them all and really enjoyed them so it was hard for me to not fall in love with this one like I had hoped that I would.
The premise is Ann wakes alone and wounded on a beach. She has no idea how she has gotten there and how this bullet has gotten in her shoulder. She doesn’t even remember her name. It is by fate that two men, Archer and Derek, come along to her rescue. Scooping her up and taking her to their refuge in the nearby compound she is introduced to a whole new world and they set out to help her find herself again. She has no idea what is about to come and who these men will turn out to be to her. But it will all make sense to her in due time…
“The Reader” by M.K. Harkins is the first gripping book in The Immortal Series by M.K. Harkins. This book blew me away with the originality of the story, amazing characters and nearly non- stop action. To say I was pulled to it is an understatement. I couldn’t stop thinking about it! It starts with a young woman waking up on a beach, not knowing who she is or where she is. From there, the story gets crazy good but I don’t want to give away any details because they are SO GOOD! If you like books that are a bit off the norm, you will love this book! M.K Harkins has built such an interesting world with “The Reader” and I’m hoping for many books to follow! M.K. Harkins really keeps you guessing until the very end how everything will shake out and even in the end, I’m still not sure what lies ahead but I know I can’t wait to read it! This book isn’t very long, so give yourself a few hours to devour this book and get ready for “The Jack!” I clearly give “The Reader” five stars and would give more if I could!

The Reader ( The Immortal Series Book 1) By M.K.Harkins is the first book in the Immortal Series and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series as well. I’ve read other books by this author and this one climbs to the top.I had the hardest time putting it down once I started reading. The authors style of writing grabs your attention from the beginning and keeps it till the end. There are some twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happens next and then we are taken the other way. This story is about Ann, who is a eighteen years old and she’s being hunted, shot and has some memory loss. When she finds herself on a deserted island And is approached by two men.Does she get her memory back?will she regain her past and who she really is?who are these two men? I highly recommend reading this Book especially if you want to know what happens
The Reader by M.K. Harkins
Four Stars
The Reader is the first book in the Immortal Series by M.K. Harkins. This is not the first book I have read by this author, but it is my new favorite of hers. This Young Adult book had me hooked from the very first page. I read it in one sitting. The witty banter and the intrigue was funny and creative. The characters are likable and the plotline although paranormal is highly believable. I love that this book had me guessing almost till the end, and the twists and turns had me shaking my head thinking what could happen next. This is a great start to a new series, and I can’t wait to see what M.K. has instore for us in the next book in this series.
The Reader (The Immortal Series Book 1) By MK Harkins. While I wasn’t immediately drawn in, I did eventually get hooked on this story of a young girl in a world she doesn’t know. Now I did take an instant liking to the main character Ann, I simply loved her character. In fact I liked every character for a different reason, each of them brings something unique and different to the story making for a really great reading experience. This book is more than just a paranormal type story there’s a healthy dose of suspense that keeps you on both the edge of your seat and the tips of your toes. The characters are complex, flawed and believable. The author brings the story to life simply with the way it’s written. It’s well thought out and paced nicely. I’m excited to read more. Giving this story a five star review and highly recommend it.
The Reader (The Immortal series book 1)
By MK Harkins
The reader is book one in the immortal series by MK Harkins.
This isn’t my first book by this author and once again I haven’t been disappointed with what I have read. Yes, this book is probably aimed at YA, but the book kept my interest from the first chapter to the last chapter and I do recommend this book to anyone of any age and I hope you enjoy it as I did. This book is a quick read, the storyline itself moves at a good pace. The character building in The Reader I feel gives us the chance of getting to know the characters. There is plenty of things happening in this book for everyone and I can promise you will not be disappointed. We have romance, mystery and action. What more do you need?
The Reader by MK Harkins is a YA book but do not let that deter you from reading this book. Harkins has spun a great story. There is mystery, suspense, paranormal, and a little bit of romance. The characters are fully developed and works well within the scope of the story. I really like Ann Baker. She is a strong young lady who has a total memory erased. First, I think I would totally not be trusting of anyone. I would not go with two men that cannot answer questions. I would eventually warm up but have my guard up. Ann went with the two guys and learned that there is a compound for higher evolved humans reside. There many people who have welcomed Ann with open arms but there are others that wish she was not found. This is the meat and potatoes of the book, so I am not revealing any more. Will Amy figure out what is going on before it is too late?

I’ve never read a book by this author and was pleasantly surprised by this read!
I loved the twists and turns and I was able to be sicked right in. The story, even without the romantic interests , was great.
After waking and not remembering what happened, Ann is on the beach injured and finds a community of readers. They believe she’s one of The Lost Ones, and it causes split thoughts in the community. Jealousy causes actions that turn to chaos.
I really didnt want this to end, cant wait to read more from this author.
I must admit what pulled me in was the cover of the novel but when i started reading it, it also had me pulled in i couldn’t tear my eyes away had to read the whole book in ome sitting. The storyline was fun and it certainly is a page turner. It had plenty of action and the plot kept me intrigued right til the very end i can’t wait to read more from this author.
The Reader is the first book in MK Harkins’ The Immortal Series. It introduces us to Harkins’ wonderful world of Readers, Jacks and Seers through Ann, a young woman who may or may not be the chosen one.
The book begins with Ann washing up in a strange place with barely any recollection of her past, or who she is. She has to make quick decisions about who to trust, and whether or not to be guided by the cryptic thoughts that send shivers down her spine.
Over the course of the story, Ann regains memories and learns more about the community she finds herself in. This is accompanied with a development of her relationship with two men – Devon and Archer. At times, this comes across as a clichéd love triangle, but with some twists thrown in it stays interesting.
As the first book in the series, there is a lot of world building which I really enjoy. It’s a fantasy set within the modern world, with plenty of state-of-the-art technology giving it an almost sci-fi feel. There’s action and training scenes, romance and mystery that keep the story varied and enjoyable.
For me, this is a five star read. It’s really entertaining, and gripping at times. I’m looking forward to reading the next book and seeing how the story progresses! I’d recommend it to fantasy and sci-fi fans, particularly young adult readers!
Wow, this book had me turning pages so fast because I couldn’t absorb the story fast enough. There was no way I could take a break to be an adult while reading it.
This is the first book in “The Immortal Series” and I’m so glad I have book 2 downloaded already.
This story had a familiarity about it but was different enough that it heads in a direction I was not expecting. I read this blind so wasn’t sure exactly what the story would be about.
The character development is spot on. The descriptions of locations was detailed enough to be visual but not so detailed that it dragged the story down. The story has a very obvious beginning, middle, and end and has a well thought out plot. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This is a fantastic book for young and old readers alike.
The Readers is the first part of a duet by M.K. Harkins. It is not the first encounter with this writer and when this book popped up on my radar then I knew that I have to pick up a copy as I absolutely loved the other books I had read by her! I was though not ready for it!
I would call it paranormal love triangle … what else would you call when you have highly evolved humans who can read minds (Readers), humans who can hijack other bodies (Hijacks), and Seers who have been wiped out though … so we have that crazy world where the Seers have predicted a very special Reader will be born one day who will unite everyone … this is the stage where we meet Ann and Devon and Archer. When Ann wakes up in shallow water she has no recollection who she is … can you imagine being only eighteen, shot and without your memory? Who can you trust, where will you go? Can she trust those two young men – Archer and Devon – who approach her?
The writer takes us down a rabbit hole filled with lies and murder and betrayal … well, she actually takes us to a mountain top but you get me … it is an intense story that is fast paced and doesn’t leave many cold … cannot wait to see what the sequel brings us!
The Reader (The Immortal Series #1)

The Reader was a really great, fast paced read. This isn’t the first book that I have read by this author in fact I have read quite a few so I knew that u would be in for a great read and again I wasn’t disappointed! The story was full of fantastic plot twists and turns, great characters and a unique storyline that made for a thrilling and exciting read.
The authors’ writing was brilliant, the world building particularly good. I was already hooked on the book after reading the blurb but once I started reading I knew it was going to be one of those hard to put down books. The book really did start off strong; whilst there were a few parts that felt a little rushed I still enjoyed it immensely. I liked the main characters and thought that they developed well over the storyline.
I would absolutely recommend The Reader to sci-fi, paranormal fans and definitely YA’s. I am looking forward to book 2 in the series.
The Reader by M.K. Harkins was a fast pace unique read that had twist turns and my attention.
My first read by this author I didn’t know what to expect, cause the blurb was dark, intriguing and it really got you in the right mine set for this original read.
I have to say this book has a strong start, and it really drew me into the story. The wiring was solid, easy to follow and had a nice dark tone that matched that powerful opening. But, I have to put this in there, I’m not a fan of insta-love, and the way our MC’s runs into, not one but two love interest and has a connecting right away, really drew me out of the story had by my eyes rolling. I felt like it was forced and in truth, this story could have ran without the romance.
Outside of that the world building was great, the detail was rich and painted a movie like picture in your head. The plot was unique and, it did feel rushed in places, but this did tie together the scenes nicely and nothing was left unanswered. The ending, was okay, but, I felt like it was again, rushed. This book is under 300 paged, so there was room to expand on that ending to polish it out.
This book is worth the read, it has a little bit of everything, could use with maybe another edit just to help with the rushyness and maybe just polish out the scenes that were rushed, as to closed then out nicely. But as I said, this book is worth the read, as it has a wonderfully unique plot, world and the characters, that are very well written and enhance the plot.
I give this book my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.
Happy Reading

The Reader
MK Harkins
4 out of 5 stars
MK Harkins is a new to me author but with the gorgeous cover and intriguing, mysterious synopsis of The Reader I felt that picking up this book was a no brainer. As I had hoped, The Reader was an attention grabber from the first few pages and even though I was skeptical going in, the characters were not what I had preconceived them to be as young adults. I was worried that the characters in The Reader may be too immature, whiny or completely unrelatable since the premise of the story was so unique. (Can you tell I do not read YA, paranormal romance often?) I couldn’t have been more off base with this. I thought that Ann was a great, strong, feisty character and the dynamic relationships throughout were well crafted.
The Reader is a fairly short book with a good pace so it was hard to put down once I started reading, overall I enjoyed my short escape from reality and I look forward to reading more from MK Harkins.
