I didn’t really understand the premise. I understand what wagers are, but I didn’t understand ruining someone for one or the fact everyone wanted to do it. I had a hard time getting over the gross factor of the wager to really enjoy the book and I wasn’t very sympathetic to those that took part in the wager including the supposed hero no matter why he participated.
This was one of those books that you just have to read the last pages on your cell while you are watching the timer on your Thanksgiving turkey run down. What a fun journey watching how it all takes place. I even found myself rooting for the buddy of Ambrose. Vaughn really seems like a scoundrel, it seems he’s got a good heart! Alex and her best friend Perdita are two ladies I would have been friends with! I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it!
Fun reading
Ambrose Worthing may be a cold-hearted rake with a reputation that has marriage minded mamas hiding their daughters; but when he learns of a wager placed on the betting books of White’s gentlemen’s club that will result in the public ruination of the Earl of Rockford’s daughter he is compelled to intervene. He accepts the wager, rationalizing that his seduction of the young woman would be kinder than if she were to fall prey to some other ruthless scoundrel. Although Worthing has no idea what the intended victim looks like (he hasn’t seen her since she was a young child), he sets about renewing his acquaintance with the Earl – a longtime friend of his father. The earl invites Worthing to spend several weeks in the country and Worthing readily accepts, knowing he can accomplish his goal more easily in the countryside.
Lady Alexandra Rockford has vowed never to marry nor fall in love. Although it is several years since she’d been jilted by Marshall Clifford who chose to marry instead a wealthy London socialite, Alexandra (Alex to her friends) still nurses a broken heart and thus shuns London and the ton. She and like-minded friend Perdita Darby enjoy the local dances and festivities until the night that Worthing shows up. Alex and Ambrose meet at a dance and without benefit of knowing who the other is are immediately attracted to each other. Imagine Alex’s surprise in learning that the most handsome man she’s seen is Ambrose Worthing, a notorious rake whose reputation is known even in the countryside. Imagine Worthing’s surprise when the bold and beautiful minx who captivates him is none other than the one he’s agreed to seduce for money. He’d been expecting a mousy and unattractive young miss. What neither suspects is that love holds all the cards in this hand, although the dangerous and almost destitute Viscount Darlington is the wild card. A carefully scripted and tightly-woven plot make The Rakehell’s Seduction a joy to read.
This reviewer read the ebook edition and was discouraged when the story ended little more than half-way through the purchased edition. The remainder of the space was given over to three chapters of another of the author’s works. This should have been billed as a novella.
I always love her books, but this one was so bad, I couldn’t finish it.
Good book, have read alot of this authors books

He never expected the lady in question to be a beautiful, fiery creature who has passions of her own that call to his guarded heart.

Another well written book by the author, I was drawn in to it from the first page. Ambrose is everything a rake should be, Alex is delightful & at their first meeting proves she’s no shrinking violet but felling him with her knee. Their verbal sparring is very entertaining & often had me chuckling. Their attraction to each other simmers & then sizzles. The lengths Ambrose went to win Alex was touching & definitely a case of when a rake fell he tumbled!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book
‘The Rakehell’s Seduction’ by Lauren Smith is book Two in the “Seduction” series. This is the story of Ambrose Worthing and Lady Alexandra Rockford. Ambrose is a know rake and seems to be somewhat selfish but when he learns about a bet that is on the books about Alexandra the daughter of his father’s best friend. Ambrose goes forward with a plan to try and win the bet in order to help Alexandra in a way. Alexandra has been hurt in the past by a childhood sweetheart who up and married a heiress. So Alexandra has sworn off marriage and knows how to put someone in their place who tries to make demands of her. But Ambrose has a way about him that she is finding hard to fight. Ambrose to is surprised at how much he is attracted to Alexandra. But how will things go when Alexandra finds out what Ambrose is up to. Can Ambrose become the man that Alexandra needs? Wow! This was another great book by Ms. Smith. Ms. Smith is one of my favorite authors and when I see her name on a book I know I will be getting a great story!
I loved this story!
So, it appears that even the worst of Rake’s can be reformed and have his heart thoroughly broken. Wonders will never cease and I say that in the nicest of ways.
This story is simply delightful. It held my attention throughout, made my heart pound and throb, brought tears to my eyes and had laughter bubbling out of me.
The plot is amazingly simple and on reflection, those rakes are idiots and really must have been bored out of their heads to take on the wagers they did, this one in particular, but I can see that kind of thing happening.
If you want to read a steamy yet all engrossing historical novel you have to read this one!
very wordy. to long
