This is a fun, light-hearted book….perfect for an afternoon’s escape. Lady Isobel is newly married to the Marquess of Roth. Immediately following the wedding, he whisks her away to the ducal estate to consummate the marriage and then leaves her. For over three years. Isobel is lonely, frustrated and angry. She wants a husband and a family and decides it’s time to demand both. Her husband, Winter, is not only surprised when Isobel reappears in London but also finds himself still wholly attracted to his wife. Something he sees as a true inconvenience.
This is a sexy escape. Isobel finds her fire and the game of seduction between her and Winter is entertaining to watch. I liked Winter for the most part. I didn’t always see his reasoning behind insisting he avoid Isobel but it still worked for “romance reasons.” Same goes for several plot points in the book that seemed pretty implausible. But once I reminded myself that this is a story…and a fun one at that….it’s easy to overlook these things and I found that I really couldn’t put the book down.
This is my first book by Amalie Howard. I knew that it was part of a series but stands just fine on it’s own. I would recommend this to any fan of historical fiction looking for a fun, steamy, quick read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled for an ARC of this book. The opinions here are my own.
The notorious Marquess of Roth never wanted to get married but agrees to marry Lady Isobel Vance to protect her from a former gross peer.
After their wedding night, he slips away back to London leaving his new wife behind at his father’s estate. This way he’ll never get attached because he can’t be what she needs.
Three years later, Isobel is still leaving apart from her husband and learning of all his exploits via the gossip rags. When the latest piece arrives she decides enough is enough and heads to London to win her husband back by channeling Lady Darcy, a persona she and her best friend created in order to write a bawdy advice column.
I loved this so much. Especially Isobel’s overall growth from when we first met her in the Beast of Beswick.
Oh man, and every time Winter ordered her to leave, I’d feel the sting and wonder what she would do next to get her husband’s attention.
Do we get a Westmore book next?
Thanks so much to Entangled, NetGalley, and the author for this ARC to review.
Owning a unprincipled and wicked club, the Marquess of Roth has a reputation to uphold. He definitely does not want to be seen as a family man and so he leaves the wife he was pushed into accepting because of a strained father-son bond.
Isobel, the new Marquess of Roth has decided three years of exile and total silence from her philander of her husband according to the gossip rags is no longer going to be tolerated! She decides to journey to London on his territory and become a seductress to catch his attention.
Fireworks erupt when he discovers her arrival and how much she has changes from the young naive girl he first married.
The author makes the characters fun and fresh! I was wanting to turn the pages to see what would develop next.
I definitely would recommend this book!
I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
I had a great time with this book! I fell in love with the first book in this series of stand-alone novels, The Beast of Beswick, so I was really eager to read this book. I went into this book with pretty high expectations and I was not disappointed. The story pulled me in right away and I was hooked until the end by this pair of characters.
The book opens with Winter and Isobel’s wedding. After their wedding night, he leaves his wife at his father’s estate and goes back to London where he remains for the next three years. Isobel has grown up a lot during those three years and now writes an infamous advice column along with her best friend. When she reads the newest gossip headline involving her husband, she is furious and decides it is time to go to London herself.
I loved these characters. Isobel knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to take steps to make it happen. She sometimes does things that would be considered improper which I loved. Winter doesn’t feel like he deserves to be loved or truly happy so he has kept his wife at a distance even though he is drawn to her. He works very hard at making his rather scandalous club a success. He has a lot of things to work through and Isobel is more than willing to help him do it. I loved the chemistry between these characters and their banter was a whole lot of fun.
I really liked how original this story was. I don’t read a ton of historical fiction but the genre is not new to me by any stretch. This book started with the couple getting married and then we get to see them fall for each other instead of the other way around. Isobel was a lot more assertive than I am used to seeing and I loved her for it. I think that the author did a fantastic job of creating two characters that were perfect for each other in this book.
I would recommend this book to fans of historical romance. I thought that this book was a lot of fun, filled with great characters, and had a good dose of excitement to keep things interesting. I definitely plan to read more of this talented author’s work in the future.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Entangled: Amara via NetGalley.
I did enjoy this entertaining story very much. I loved the way Isobel took things into her own hands and made more than a match for Winter, Marquess of Roth. At times, I felt like giving Roth a shake, especially when he purposely said cruel things. However, Isobel was certainly up to the task she set herself. It was good for Roth to be told a number of home truths. There are a number of interesting secondary characters, dangerous events and another romance. Altogether, an engaging read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Winter Vance, the Marquess of Roth doesn’t want a wife, but his father is being his usual stubborn self. Just because he has to take a wife doesn’t mean he has to live with her.
Lady Isabel Roth is fed up with being ignored so it’s time to take control of what she wants. London and a grand adventure await.
There is much more to both our lead characters than anyone could guess. Secrets and denials are the rule, and sexual tension is running high. There are also plenty of giggles between all the females.
I loved it.
“The Rakehell of Roth” by Amalie Howard
I liked the story. It is a good story, although, there was more sex than I prefer, thus the less than 5-star rating. In a print format those scenes are not that difficult to skip over.
NOTE: I received an ARC of this story from the publisher. This is my honest opinion.

Will he be able to see past his blinders before loosing his way to redemption…
I have read the first book in the series, and while it was good, it did not reach the level of this one.
How young both were, as winter married Isobel before his twenty-first birthday.
Still there was an ocean of differences between them, when She was naive, he was bitter, gullible to the fault, cynical to the bone, blind to his flaws, conscious of the muddy waters he was walking in.
I confess despite the hero’s causes to act the way he did, which was very wrong. I was 1000% behind the heroine to teach him a lesson. So each time, she faltered, I was shooting at her « stand up Girl! », to steel her spine, grit her teeth and face him her head held high. He was the one who left her behind to rot alone after he got what he wanted. Worse repeatedly he hurt her, again and again, deliberately.
I just would have liked her to have more mastery over her emotions, I am not fond of women turning into puddle of drooling. Yet when it mattered truly, I liked she was able to lock her knees and jumped straight into the fight.
Isobel changed a lot in the course of three and a half year she was left to languish in the country. Left and forgotten.
I loved she was taken in hand, striped of her ingenue’s skin. She found a new family and allies in the place her cad of a husband dumped her and washed his hands of her. There she recreated herself in a stronger, more confident and independent young woman. She can take care of herself and stand for herself. Yet when you receive blow after blow, it is understandable your resolve can falter.
Winter while I understand his reason to be angry from his point of view, not once did he seek to understand the hows and whys. He let his ire take control and decided to become the worst possible heir to spat on his father. He used Isobel as a pawn, and while he is drawn to her, he slapped her emotionally many times, rejecting her again and again, because he denies his feelings and chooses his revenge over everything even else, even love.
I know love is forgiveness why Isobel too readily took him back, but he really needed to grovel and crawl a lot more, after the many blows he threw at her, some grand gesture would have soften the path.
But oh my, the love scenes, hot hot hot and wondrous. Get an atomizer at close range, because it will be handy when the heat around you will rise.
And while the plot is all about Winter and Isobel, there is a second romance in the background, and if look could kill, Oliver the uptight younger brother of the hero would be long dead, killed by their childhood friend Clarissa. Clarissa was the breath of fresh air in this tale, witty, outrageous and impertinent renaming at will all those bothering her, mostly Oliver.
And more often than less, she stole the limelights, she is such an accomplished performer with words, it is hilarious, she wields her peculiar language like a blade, slicing and pricking.
I hope the author will one day offer them a novella.
In all, if you are in for a mouse turned cat, a dashing hero in need of his head being bashed, supportive witty characters and ton’s intrigues, do not miss this clever and brilliant read, you will a fan to cool off during certain scorching passages.
4.75 because I needed more groveling rounded up to 5 stars.
hot hot hot
I have been granted an advance copy by the publisher Entangled, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

4.5 Stars
As owner of the most scandalous club in London, the last thing the notorious Marquis of Roth wants is a wife. Keeping up his false reputation as a rake brings in the clients with the deepest pockets—money he needs to fund a noble cause. Winter Vance, the Marquis of Roth marries Isobel Eversleigh to give her protection form a dastardly earl & also to meet the codicil to his inheritance, he beds her & promptly leaves her at his father’s country seat. Three years later, tired of her scoundrel of a husband headlining the gossip rags, Lady Isobel Vance decides enough is enough. She is no longer a fragile kitten, but as the anonymous author of a women’s sexual advice column, she’s now a roaring tigress…and she can use her claws. Isobel decides to go to him in London, channelling her powers of seduction to make him beg to take her back.
This is the second book in the series but is easily read on its own. I loved both Winter & Isobel not only was their attraction combustible but their verbal bantering was brilliant too. Winter had lots of emotional baggage, which he found hard to let go of but then he learnt that not everything was as it seemed. I loved how the quiet docile Isobel came out of her shell & often took a leaf out of her alter ego on how to behave. I also loved the secondary characters, Clarissa was a hoot & I’d love Westmore to be brought to his knees! An entertaining, engrossing read which I found hard to put down
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Stunning sequel to The Beast of Beswick!
Were you as shocked as I was when Isobel showed up married to Roth at the end of Astrid and Thane’s book? Well, here we get the rest of that story. Winter Vance, Marquess of Roth, had his own reasons for agreeing to the quick wedding, as long as it didn’t interfere with any other aspect of his life. That’s why he deposited his new wife at his father’s estate the very next day and promptly returned to London, but not before securing the marriage with a quick yet satisfying consummation. Hate him yet? Yeah, me too.
Isobel waits patiently for THREE YEARS while he’s off supposedly still living the life of a confirmed rake, until the latest scandal is the proverbial last straw. Now the game is ON, and it’s anybody’s bet as to who is going to win (not really – we know Isobel holds all the cards – Winter is a man, after all).
Isobel has matured tremendously in the ensuing years, while Winter hasn’t been able to forget a single detail of his lovely wife and their brief time together. NO WORRIES here – he remained faithful to her, regardless of the rumors to the contrary. Their battle to break down the walls between them is predictably steamy while surprisingly tender and sweet, and it cleverly includes scenes and tropes that I have never before seen done so well in a historical romance.
Along the way secrets are dredged up, enemies known and unknown complicate matters, and a secondary romance delightfully gives new meaning to the concept of “tea parties.” This amazing story is every bit as engaging and entertaining as its predecessor. If you read The Beast of Beswick, then you already know you have to read this one. If you haven’t, then you want to read that one AND this one and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I received “The Rakehell of Roth” from Netgalley and voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Amalie Howard has a way with words that brings the readers right into the story.
Lady Isobel Vance, the new Marchioness of Roth, is married to Winter Vance who leaves her right after consummating their marriage… on their wedding night. Now, three years later, Isobel wants to have a true relationship with her husband, who seems to be cavorting in every vice possible, and scandalizing the ton. She hides a few truths about herself as well when she meets Winter again. A fabulous love story.
I got an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) of this book from Netgalley and as always the opinions are all mine. This was my first time reading Amalie Howard and it won’t be my last! In fact, I just found out this is actually the second book in a series. This does make sense as when you read this book Isobel has a sister named Astrid who is deliriously happy with her beloved husband. The series is called Everleigh Sisters and I am not sure who might be written about in book three but it’s a must-read series for me!
Now on to “The Rakehell of Roth,” the book is named in reference to Winter Vance, Marquess of Roth and this is a dual POV book so we do spend plenty of time in his head, but make no mistake this book is Isobel’s story.
I completely enjoyed this book, Isobel is a strong character who doesn’t give up even though her Husband has built up some very high walls around his emotions and is really good at self-sabotage. Even though this is the Regency Period this book is filled with consent and the women are not ashamed about the pleasure sex gives.
Each chapter of the book begins with a quote from Lady Darcy which is an advice column written for women and read throughout London during the book. To give you a taste of what those columns are like here is a quote: “Sometimes, Dearest Friend, white knights are overrated. Be the storm in the night and stage your own rescue.” * Wow right? That’s what this book delivers- empowerment and great sex!
This book is a very satisfying read. If you like romance, but don’t read much Historical Romance, I say give this one a go, I think you’ll really enjoy it.
* The quote I used was from the Advanced Reader Copy so the text might change again before the final publication- but I wanted to share an example of Lady Darcy’s advice because it was so delightful.
Let me just say that this story is totally not what I was expecting and I am so glad! This is one hot and fiery story. The heroine is bold and outspoken and totally in love with her husband.
He was pretty much a jerk but, oh, how the sparks fly. This book is wild and crazy, with shades of erotica that takes the story to new levels. Humorous and bold; I absolutely I love it!
I have never read Howard before this book and while I am super sad on one hand, the fact is now I have a new author whos works I get to devour! Her writing is unapologetic as she blends her lusty sass into a historic based, typically conventional storyline. You will not look at historic romance in the same light again!
Fast paced, exciting, and definitely not full of boring banter, The Rakehell of Roth is one you won’t forget and will have you craving even more from this author.
Everything is not as it seems. While I am hesitant to read stories where there is a lot of misunderstanding that goes on in the entire book, this story is really so much more than that. I found the interactions between the characters to be outstandingly witty and clever. Isobel is terribly clever and even though she feels hurt sometimes it almost never lets her abandon her real purpose. Winter frustrated me at times with his letting Isobel believe certain things that were absolutely not true. Men! Slowly Winter realizes that the love, not lust, of his life is right before him. I also like that it has a secondary romance and I would have loved to see more of that relationship on the page. I thought this book was great fun and it is one of the top two books I have read of Amalie’s.
Is Westmore next, I hope so!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher from NetGalley.
I enjoyed The Rakehell of Roth immensely. If you’re looking for an entertaining and steamy historical romance, look no further.
I loved the fact that Amalie Howard brings us a trope with a married couple. Sometimes that makes the romance and story even better, and it definitely did that here.
In the Rakehell of Roth, Isobel and Winter were an estranged couple that never really knew each in the first place. When they reunited after 3 years, they had chemistry and sexual tension in spades, and the buildup was spot. on.
The banter and repartee between the two was edgy and entertaining, and their slow-burn was brutally satisfying. I enjoyed both Winter and Isobel, but I especially liked Isobel. She was an excellent combination of innocent yet strong-willed and independent, slightly reserved while also surprisingly blatant and passionate.
Isobel’s best friend Clarissa was a blast, and I was hoping she’d get her own full story but (alas) she starred in a secondary romance in this book.
Winter was also a great character, but the miscommunication with his family deterred me from fully appreciating him. I got frustrated with how long the misunderstanding between him and his father and brother went on.
Overall though, this was an excellent read. Now I’m hoping to hear the Duke of Westmore will be getting his story.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy generously provided by the publisher via NetGalley.***
I liked the first book of the series and I loved this one. The characters and the story was original and so entertaining. It was refreshing seeing the naive and innocent Isobel becoming a strong and saucy woman. Her boldness and her recklessness were so appealing that I read the book in one sitting.
Winter on the other hand was a bit annoying because of his stubborness, but Isobel was strong enough to “take him down”.
That was amatch made in heaven!!
I received an Arc through NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
A Battle of Wills.
Reputations stick! Despite having mended his ways since his sister’s death, Roth is still considered a rake and it must be said, his reputation enhances that of the club that he owns with friend. The person who is hurt by the gossip sheets is the wife he married to protect from a villain, but then abandoned at his father’s country seat.
After three years her father-in-law the Duke persuades Izzy it is time to seek Roth out in London and fight for the future she wants. Roth is convinced that as he was unable to save his sister that he doesn’t deserve a family of his own, plus his ongoing feud with his father means he bends over backwards not to please him. However the Izzy he meets in London is now a woman and a far cry from the young and adoring girl he married and she is determined that he will see her! Steamy read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
They always talk about the country girl going to the city but they never talk about the city girl going to the country, until now! And Oh the mischief she is up to. Amalie Howard is fast becoming one of my favorite authors with her saucy leading ladies and her brooding, devastatingly handsome leading men. Winter Roth marries the beautiful Isobel to get her away from a horrible, older suitor. After the ceremony he takes her to his father’s estate in the country, has sex with her and then flees back to the city. For three and a half years Isobel and her companion, Clarissa, set everyone atwitter with their scandalous news articles called “Lady Darcy:. Finally Isobel decides she has had enough and she goes to London to fight for her husband. She is not the timid little mouse he remembered leaving in the country and his efforts at shocking her seem to shock him. This book has all of the elements of a perfect romance: drama, sex appeal, mystery, humor, and heat that would scorch. I read it in one sitting!
Thank you Amalie Howard and Entangled Publishing for the chance to read and review it.
