As owner of the most scandalous club in London, the last thing the notorious Marquess of Roth wants is a wife. Keeping up his false reputation as a rake brings in the clients with the deepest pockets–money he needs to fund a noble cause. Even though everything inside tells him not to leave his beautiful, innocent wife behind at his country estate…he must. But three years later, tired of her … tired of her scoundrel of a husband headlining the gossip rags, Lady Isobel Vance decides enough is enough. She is no longer a fragile kitten, but as the anonymous author of a women’s sexual advice column, she’s now a roaring tigress…and she can use her claws.
Isobel decides to go to him in London, channeling her powers of seduction to make him beg to take her back. But she didn’t expect her marauding marquess to be equally hard to resist. Now the game is on to see who will give in to the other first, with both sides determined like hell to win.

I was pulled into Isobel and Winter’s story hard and thought I was not going to be able to put it down. Then life intervened and stretched it out for me. Any time I stall in a story I am more prone to pick it apart, but I mostly resisted and I was flying through the pages towards the end. I liked the story overall even though I think Winter needed a swift kick in his pants. There was miscommunication but interestingly enough it wasn’t between the two main characters. The story had a lot going on but there were entertaining moments and a lot of girl power.
4.5 Lady Darcy stars!
Amalie Howard, where the hell have you been my entire life?! I cannot believe that this is the first book I’ve read by Amalie as I absolutely adored her writing style; it was so effortless and perfectly balanced in dialogue and character growth. I loved every single word of her novel, and I could not read fast enough even though work this week made it hard to devour as quickly as I would have liked.
However as much as I loved this story, I do have one minor hang-up which caused me to drop 1/2 a star. I really wanted Winter to grovel more and have this grand moment of “I’m such a bastard and a blathering fool and I would be nothing without you and I’m so sorry, please forgive me and I’ll spend the rest of my angst-riddled days making it up to you.” Even though we hear his guilt and remorse, I felt he wasn’t as contrite towards Isobel after he majorly fucks up multiple times and just wish he would have given her the epic grovel she deserves after putting up with his nonsense.
Nevertheless, there were so many aspects of this amazing story that I loved. I loved Winter’s constant swearing; his sailor mouth definitely felt in sync with my own! The side characters were just as lovable as Winter and Isobel; I found myself rooting for Oliver and Clarissa almost more than I was for Winobel and cheering whenever Clarissa sampled Oliver’s tea… **wink, wink** There was just enough OW drama, angsty thoughts of unworthiness from our hero, danger and excitement with guns and swordfights, and plenty of scenes of our heroine taking the reins and showing our hero what a dumbass he really is (lovingly, of course). I will definitely be reading more of Amalie Howard’s books, beginning with THE BEAST OF BESWICK, and look forward to more from her!
This was my first time back in the historical romance genre in probably 5 years! I am so happy I have dived back in with the Rakehell of Roth! To say I loved this book would be an understatement.
Isobel married when she was young, only 18, to escape Beaumont’s clutches after he had already ruined her sister. Isobel was young and full of hope for her marriage to the Marquess of Roth. The Marquess of Roth, Winter, had always been vocal that he never wanted to marry. But he did one good thing and stepped up to help Isobel by giving her his name, and family’s protection.
Spending a single night with her, to consummate the marriage, he fled back to his life of debauchery in London. Leaving his young wife in the care of his father. Winter’s wasn’t really what everyone thought he was. And that one night with Isobel was all it took to have him obsessing about his wife. However, his hatred for his father following the deaths of his mother and sister have left him enraged, and he won’t do anything that would please the duke, not least be back with his wife and have a family.
For three-years Isobel has been sequestered in the country while reading all the exploits of her husband in London. Isobel sick of reading the tales her husband is up in London comes to town to reign her husband in and fight for him. She arrives in London, and makes it plainly clear that she is wanting a proper marriage, and children, they come to a sort of wager, where if she hasn’t managed to seduce him back into her bed by the end of a month, she’ll go home, and might find another way to have children, without involving Winter at all.
These two characters are everything! They are fighting against themselves as much as they are each other. Isobel is a Lady Boss. In the time she has been in the country away from husband she has found her voice. She knows what she wants and when the stories of Winter’s antics become too much she goes all in to get what she wants.
This story starts of hot but there is a slow burn element to it. Amazing banter and characters you want to smack and hug all at the same times. I loved every second of this story.
Unfortunately this book was a miss for me.
I had some problems with the writing and I can’t even explain what it was that bothered me about it sorry.
I didn’t understand the heroines eternal struggle to win the hero’s affections since I thought him very annoying and way too stubborn.
I just thought she should move on and take a lover and be happy in the country where she loved to be.
It also bothered me that he wouldn’t listen to his father and half brother when they wanted to tell him the truth about his sisters death. If he had done that there wouldn’t have been all this heartache and they could have been happy way before.
For me the mystery should have been the main plot but that also fell flat to me unfortunately.
The good thing about the story is the heroine’s sister from the former book, the best friend who is very open to speaking about sex and her relationship with the hero’s half brother and the orphan twins that are so different from each other that you can’t help but laugh.
I hope I will love the next book.
Gorgeous, steamy, sexy. Loved it!
Amalie Howard does it again! This book is a great addition to the Everleigh Sisters’ series, I adored Beast of Beswick and this one fantastically holds its own! Howard’s writing is engaging, funny, fast paced, sensually sexy as see weaved together a love story between two people who start of their relationship with a marriage of convenience.
Howard has craft her characters with care and thought. I found our hero and heroine to be extremely compelling and I delighted in all of our side characters, everyone felt real and grounded. I was charmed by the secondary love story that sprouts up amidst our main story. I loved that the heroine is determined to grow and come into her own as she challenges the hero throughout the novel. I loved that the hero has a deeper depth to him that drives him to distance himself. I loved watching both of their journey as they realize what they want in life, how they truly feel about the other and how they are delightfully compatible in all aspects.
I absolutely recommend this novel, Amalie Howard is fast becoming a favorite of mine, and I am looking forward to continue reading her back list and new novels (one which is very recently out)!
When I read The Beast of Beswick last year, I fell in love with Amalie Howard and was super excited to read more about Isobel’s marriage of convenience to the notorious rake, Winter Vance, Marquess of Roth in The Rakehell of Roth. Isobel and Winter did not disappoint in steam, angst, emotion and fiesty banter!
After being abandoned in the country by her scoundrel of a husband immediately following their wedding three years ago, Isobel has turned her life around. Instead of a timid mouse she’s now a brave, fearless, woman writing a sex column shocking the ton. She is determined to go to London and win Winter back with every means of seduction, masquerading and dirty talk she knows!
I loved Isobel! She is a strong heroine that takes what she wants. Isobel has completely changed who she was- a wide eyed innocent to now she can ride a horse, shoot a gun and speak freely about sex. She’s turned herself into a bada$$, she saves Winter’s butt, proving the Queen can save herself. Those are the stories I like!
There were a few parts that I just swooned over. A bachelor auction! Yes Please! Especially when Isobel uses it to prove to Winter that she loves him and then desk sex! The side characters of Clarissa and Oliver, the Duke of Kendrick and Astrid and Beswick. They were all delightful. Isobel disguised as the groom, Iz, and Winter sharing his soft side with the “boy” made me actually feel like Winter had depth.
Isabel and Clarissa are the best friends you want in your life and the character of Lady Darcy that they created is like if Lady Whistledown shadily dispensed sex advice. I liked the Lady Darcy quotes at the beginning of chapters.
“If you don’t feel like you are about to expire from organ failure, you aren’t doing it right.”- Lady Darcy
Sleeping Beauty But Make It True Love’s Sexual Skills!
Roth married Isobel to save her from a scoundrel. Isobel married Roth fancying herself in love with him…until he literally abandoned her on their wedding night. Three years older, wiser, and determine to find her own pleasure, Isobel sets her sights on claiming her husband.
I love the idea of retelling Sleeping Beauty as story of sexual awakening. Lady Darcy, Is, Clarissa, and the twins were perfect nods to the fairytale classic with a fun regency, and naughty, twist! I also loved that Isobel got to be the hero in multiple ways.
Amalie Howard is quickly becoming a favorite historical romance author for me!
The audio of this one is delightful with lots of emotion, unique voices for each character, and great pacing.
I absolutely loved this book. The heroine is strong and takes no prisoners. I loved the way Amalie Howard keeps the steam going while weaving an amazing story!
The Rakehell of Roth, is book 2 of The Everleigh Sisters series. Most of the main characters were introduced there and by the end The Beast of Beswick both sisters seemed to be safe from the villain, the Duke of Beaumont. But looks are deceiving.
While young Isobel is already in infatuated with her new husband, Winter, the Marquess of Roth he only married her to save her from Beaumont and he needed a wife to secure his inheritance from his father the Duke of Kendrick. He beds her once, spilling his seed, as he has no intention of ever fathering a child (not that he ever shared that with her before the wedding) and then leaves her at his father’s residency, Rothingham Gable in Chelmsford. He hates his father, because he believes that his father is responsible for the death of his mother and his beloved sister Prue. He is also not on very good terms with his younger brother Oliver. While he plays the rake, he is secretly one of the partners of the Silver Scythe, an infamous social club, has become quite wealthy and uses much of that wealth for charitable causes. Three years later, Isobel is fed up with her husband’s antics. In the interim, the Duke has taken her under his wing, teaching her how to ride a horse, shoot a gun and other activities. She has also become BFF with Clarissa Bell, daughter of the Duke’s solicitor, and childhood friend of Winter and Oliver. Together the two of them have taken the publishing world by storm, writing “Dearest Friends letters” penned by the Daring Lady Darcy, making them fairly wealthy themselves. So, the Duke, Isobel and Clarissa head for London for the season, shocking her husband, who refused to allow himself to love her, but also has not been able to get her out of his head these last three years. Isobel is no longer the innocent she was three years ago, and now she will get her husband up to snuff using whatever techniques that takes.
The author writes a tantalizing, convoluted tale, with wonderfully complex characters, both villains and heroes. The banter is lively, though often anachronistic. I do recommend reading book 2 first, though. I was also confused about the social status of Clarissa, as she attended balls and other social events with Isobel, but her father is a lawyer, not part of the ton.
I read an ARC from NetGalley.com. this is my unbiased and voluntary review.
Oh my god the steam.
The Rakehell of Roth, book 2 of The Everleigh Sisters series is one heck of a historical romance. Winter, the Marquess of Roth needs a wife to secure his inheritance, but he didn’t expect to fall in love with her. Needing to maintain his false reputation as a rake to keep his clients at his club in London coming back, he must leave his wife behind at his country estate.
Three years later, still married and without a visit from her scoundrel of a husband, Lady Isobel Vance has had enough. Tired of seeing her husband headlining the gossip rags, she decides to go to him in London to win him back. Using the power of seduction she learned by authoring a very popular anonymous sexual advice column she plans to channel her writing, but she didn’t expect her husband to be just as seductive and hard to resist. Will she be able to win him back?
This book…..

This is one amazing romance read. Full of steam, romance, family drama, hidden secrets and the most hilarious and satirical sexual advice, there’s no way I can’t help but give it the highest of praise. If you are into steamy romances, then I recommend this read be at the top of your list. Isobel and Winter are alluring characters that you can’t help but fall in love with, and their sexual encounters are salacious and sexy. With a plot line that is not what it seems, it’s easy to ravage this read in one sitting. I absolutely loved it.
This is Book 2 in the Regency Rogues Series including the Everleigh Sisters but can be read as a stand alone. The first book, The Beast of Beswick is one of O-The Oprah Magazine’s Top 24 Best Historicals to Read, and I highly recommend it as well.
THE RAKEHELL OF ROTH, by Amalie Howard, is book 2 of the Regency Rogues. The Marquess of Roth abandons his wife, Isobel, on their wedding night and flees to London. Three years later, tired of her scoundrel of a husband headlining the gossip rags, Isobel decides enough is enough. She is no longer a fragile kitten, but thanks to being an anonymous author of a women’s sexual advice column, she’s now a roaring tigress. Isobel goes to London to use her power of seduction to make her wayward husband beg to take her back, not expecting to find her marauding marquess to be equally hard to resist. The game is on to see who will give in to the other first. It is the battle of the sexes involving his/her banter, hot, sensual attraction, and intrigue. Amalie Howard makes THE RAKEHELL OF ROTH a sexy, delicious romantic adventure that will make you blush.
One of the best tales I have read this year. Wish I had read the first and I will read it. This book made me laugh out loud and feel for them all. I want to be friends with them. Loved these characters and the plot. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Isobel and Winter…an unusual couple from the start, though not by looks. He, a notorious rake though heir to his family’s title and then some, and she, a beauty without a season desperately trying to escape an entirely unwanted match. It looked good on paper, it certainly felt good on their wedding night, but that is where the potential fairytale ends. He left her for three years with barely a correspondence, which even when received was not directly from him, while building up his business and carefully courting his reputation as a notorious rake. She having caught wind of these affairs some time ago has finally reached a boiling point…and with the help of some good friends, and a boost of confidence from Lady Darcy herself, she’s finally ready to call his hand in the ultimate game of life; LOVE.
The tension between these two leaves almost everything feeling like an innuendo, having been made intentionally or not. I was routing for Isobel as I truly felt for her. She entered the marriage thinking one thing, only to be disillusioned, but she wasn’t giving up without a fight! Still…I was also behind Roth because, well…I mean, he’s who he is with the brains and the brawn, and yet he still can’t help but get it wrong with where he places blame. True, it’d help if he listened to some much overly needed explanations that were trying to be given to him concerning the whole situation, but I get it…his heart was hurt and he wasn’t risking it again. Or at least, he THOUGHT he wasn’t…because as we all know, the heart wants what it wants!
So, if you’re a Historical Fiction fan, love witty banter, and don’t mind the serious blush factor here, this is SO the book for you!

Winter Vance, the Marquess of Roth, didn’t particularly want a wife but he needed to unlock his inheritance to fund a worthy cause and she needed a husband. As the owner of a rather secretive and most assuredly improper club, he has a debauched reputation to uphold and leaves his wife behind in the country, even though he feels uneasy about it.
After three years of abandonment, Lady Isobel Vance is fed up with seeing her husband’s name in the scandal pages. She’s grown up and even become a coauthor of her own scandalous column educating ladies on subjects usually forbidden to them. She’s not the same girl Roth left behind and she’s eager to show him as much. She decides to beard the lion in his den and heads to London for the season to attempt a seduction of her husband. Unfortunately, she’s just as susceptible to him and they’re soon locked in a battle of wills to see who will cave first and she’s determined it won’t be her.
This story engrossed me, though it wasn’t totally issue free. The premise was well done and quite unique, but it left me with a few questions, mostly why Isobel endured such callous treatment for three years before deciding enough was enough. I also wish Winter had made more of a point of detailing his fidelity to Isobel, though thankfully it is at least made clear to the reader, otherwise I couldn’t have liked him at all. As it was, I never fully understood what his endgame was in pushing Isobel away and how he couldn’t see that he was doing to her exactly what he believed his father had done to his mother and which he so reviled the man for. Fortunately, Roth did come to his senses, but this came almost too late for me and I would’ve liked to see more groveling from him. Otherwise, I loved the dynamics between the other characters, especially Isobel and Clarissa, and I would’ve loved an extension of the scene between Oliver, Kendrick, and Winter in which they were finally openly communicating. Some of the modern language used here was a bit jarring, but I loved the naughty banter between Isobel, Clarissa, and the twins, and found it utterly charming. I loved Isobel as a heroine. She walks the line of being strong and knowing her own mind and her own worth without crossing over to being shrewish. She can take care of herself; she was unafraid to stake her claim, and she saved her man when he was in danger. This story pulled me in and made me feel Isobel’s emotions right along with her and I found it satisfying even though I do think Winter could’ve used a couple more swoon-inducing dialogues/apologies. I enjoyed this so much more than the first book in this series and I’m thrilled to finally have a strong, smart heroine I can really get behind.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Blog link: https://mustreadalltheromance.blogspot.com/2021/02/the-rakehell-of-roth-by-amalie-howard.html
The Rakehell of Roth was a steamy and humourous historical romance. I loved the female relationships in this book and thought their topics of conversation were too funny! I loved the push and pull of Isobel and Wynter’s relationship. Their constant games lead to some very spicy scenes. I wish Wynter hadn’t come off so cold and mean. Once I really got to understand him things made sense, but I didn’t like how he treated her at times.
Audio Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5
OMG – so hot and funny and romantic!
This book is only the second one I’ve read by Amalie Howard and I loved it just as much as The Beast of Beswick. These two books are connected (the female MCs are sisters) but you can easily read each as a standalone story.
I alternated between reading and listening to this book. Once again, Nina Nato turned in an outstanding performance of the audiobook. I will definitely look for other audiobooks that she’s performed.
I wasn’t expecting this story to be a steamy as it is – it was a pleasant surprise. Both Isobel and Winter are great characters. I loved how strong Isobel is and how determined she is to get what she wants. She thinks that Winter is indifferent to her but we soon learn that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The pearls of wisdom from Lady Darcy (the anonymous author of a women’s sexual advice column) that are sprinkled throughout the story are priceless.
As there are no more Everleigh Sisters, I’m guessing that there are no more books coming in this series and that makes me a bit sad. M/F historical romance isn’t my “normal” go to type of book but I’m going to take another look at Amalie Howard’s backlist!
A review copy was provided by the publisher via NetGalley but this did not influence my opinion or rating of the book.
A battle royal ensues Isabel challenges Winter to make him want her. Along with her best friend Cassie they stir up all kinds of delightful trouble. Melting Winter’s icy heart becomes a war fought on many fronts. There are other forces at work determined to see them stay apart. Together they have to fight to fend them off and see that their marriage survive.
The Rakehell of Roth by Amalie Howard
2nd book in the Everleigh Sisters series. Historical romance. Can be read as a stand-alone.
The Marquess of Roth married Isobel, did his duty and left her alone in the country for the next three years at his fathers estate. She tired of the gossip and heads to London to confront him.
I enjoyed the first book, more than expected since historical romance isn’t a particular favorite. This book was better. Maybe it was just the mood I was in, but the tone was lighter and the man spent hours on accounting and charity work. And he has been faithful while staying away from her all that time. Why not fall in love with him? But he too, had some growing up to do and letting go of the past
Lovely humor and glorious sexual tension. In a naive sort of way. Some old troupes and some kick it heroine.
I don’t know if this is typical of the author but I will be checking out some of the backlist.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share and a copy to keep. I love a feisty heroine.
After The Beast of Beswick, I’ve been desperately waiting for Isobel and Winter’s story. Their marriage was one of convenience and I was ready for Isobel to return from the country and fight for her husband. Isobel is truly a great heroine. She may have been an innocent when she married but the years apart have taught her what she wants and she’s not afraid to go after it. The sensuality of Isobel and the burning attraction between her and Winter lights up the pages. This book is sexy and scandalous and that made me love it even more. Winter is haunted by the tragedies of his past and doesn’t think he deserves to be happy. Because of this and that he senses his new wife would make him happy, he leaves her in the country for three years and occupies the scandal sheets instead. However, I will say that there isn’t any cheating in this book for those concerned. When his wife shows up and is determined to win him back, Winter struggles to fight against her wiles and his own desire for Isobel. This leads to very sexy scenes and a burning tension between the characters.
In addition to Isobel and Winter, the side characters of Isobel’s best friend Clarissa and Oliver, Winter’s brother were equally interesting. The plot of the scandalous club Winter runs is great and the hints about his ducal friend make me intrigued for future books. I think Isobel was definitely the strongest character in this story and I loved that she turned a lot of different tropes like the heroine in distress and the shy virgin upside down.
