In John Grisham’s The Rainmaker recent Memphis law school graduate Rudy Baylor finally has a job lined up with a firm only to have it fall through at the last minute. Not to give too much away, but it quickly becomes the least of his problems and, maybe in an odd way, something that provides a positive influence. Grisham’s description and portrayal of not only courtroom antics but the legal profession in general, is excellent. This is a somewhat long read, 600+ pages, but it was thoroughly compelling and entertaining. Along with the drama, there’s a good bit of humor.
There was one part in the book that had me roaring with uncontrollable laughter while reading in bed.
I never went wrong choosing a John Grisham novel or short story.
One of the best in the genre.
Another great Grisham novel. Thrilling, interesting characters and full of intrigue. Wonderful!
Fantastic legal mystery writer. All the Grisham books are spell- binding winners.
Typical early Gresham, with interesting back stories, legal maneuveringseand courtroom proceedings. First time I have added tear-jerker to a Gresham novel.
The Rainmaker applies to a member of a partnership / firm ( not just legal) who is instrumental in bringing in high value clients. In this case it applies to a new young lawyer and his shady paralegal who in trying everything to get their business off the ground (“ambulance chasing”) come across a abuse victim, resulting in a murder of the victim’s husband; and a dying son whose mother is trying to get a predatory insurance company to fulfill its contract re: her son, leading to a bittersweet conclusion. The lawyer’s housing arrangements also are an interesting back story. Made into a movie w/ Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Mickey Rourke … and directed by F. Coppola.
I read years ago, all of Grisham’s book are great
Awesome Awesome book. 6 stars.
I’ve read every John Grisham that I know of, from legal thrillers to the nostalgia. Most are over the top good reads. I like some better than others, but I’ve never been disappointed.
Absolutely amazing read
John Grisham novels always a great read
The Rainmaker is a book that will resonate with all law students or wannabe law students. It follows the story of a jobless graduate forced to hang out a shingle on the mean streets of Memphis. He must learn his craft while taking on the city’s most prestigious law firm in a bad faith insurance case.
The main character’s scrappiness and refusal to admit defeat is inspiring. The reader will root for him, even as they discover just how sleazy and unethical the bottom-dwellers of the legal profession can be.
Right up there with all of Grisham’s others
Grisham at his best
One of my all-time favorite Grisham books.
Grisham deserves his reputation. Even his weaker books are better than most other thriller writers. The Rainmaker is definitely worth reading, even if it’s not one of my Top 10 Grisham books.
Great read. Action packed with the twists and turns you expect from this author.
What is there to say about John Grisham’s, The Rainmaker? As with all of his books, of which I’ve read many, it was a GREAT read. Very informative about the law, the court’s & lawyers. A book you won’t want to put down.
