A touching and intimate correspondence between Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, offering timeless wisdom and a revealing glimpse into their lives
The Rainbow Comes and Goes is a charming, intimate and fascinating collection of correspondence between broadcaster and #1 New York Times bestselling author Anderson Cooper and his mother, the celebrated … Times bestselling author Anderson Cooper and his mother, the celebrated Gloria Vanderbilt.
Anderson Cooper’s intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS’ 60 Minutes affords him little time to spend with his ninety-one year old mother. After she briefly fell ill, he and Gloria began a conversation through e-mail unlike any they had ever had before —a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discussed their lives, the things that matter to them and what they still want to learn about each other.
Both a son’s love letter to his mother in her final years and an unconventional mother’s life lessons for her grown son, The Rainbow Comes and Goes offers a rare window into their close relationship and fascinating lives. In these often hilarious and touching exchanges, they share their most private thoughts and the hard-earned truths they’ve learned along the way. Throughout, their distinctive personalities shine through—Anderson’s darker outlook on the world is a brilliant contrast to his mother’s idealism and unwavering optimism.
An appealing blend of memoir and inspirational advice, The Rainbow Comes and Goes is a beautiful and affectionate celebration of the profound and universal bond between a parent and child, and, like Tuesdays with Morrie, a thoughtful reflection on life and love, reminding us of the precious knowledge and insight that remains to be shared, no matter what age we are.

What an interesting way to get to know these two famous people and she the worlds they live in and how they relate to each other.
This book is a series of conversations between Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt. It was an opportunity for them to finally get closer and understand each other better. Gloria is the eternal optimist, and Anderson is the realist. It interesting to see how they relate to each other and incidents in their lives, like the death of Anderson’s father and brother. It also gives insight into Gloria’s strange childhood. I found it very interesting.
Anderson Cooper does an excellent job telling of his mother’s upbringing and all the twists and turns that surrounded her life!
too slow to finish. Very disappointed
I don’t read much non-fiction, but I enjoyed this dialog between Mother and son. So wonderful to really get to know each other.
Interesting to hear the dialogue between mother and son. Enjoyed reading the book very much!
Amazing story of mother and son. Her life was unbelievable.
So glad that Anderson got to ask his mom the hard questions he never knew before she is gone. Good read!
I’ve always been interested in Gloria Vanderbilt , as I have visited the Vanderbilt mansion, Biltmore Estate, several times. Once I found out that Anderson Cooper is her son, I was even more intrigued. I really enjoyed reading this book and found it very touching, the relationship between mother and son. They both have lived very interesting lives , with periods of excitement, as well as plenty of hurt along the way. It’s interesting to read the events that shape people into who they ultimately become.
Enjoyed reading reading about the building of their relationship and about life’s ups and downs and how they coped.
Two very public lives share very intimate thoughts.
A VERY well written and easy to read book – in essence a memoir written by two people sharing and searching for deeper meaning and understanding….
Interesting because they are both well known celebrities but really didn’t know their background and “their story”.
Interesting sharing between mother and son. Learned a lot about Gloria Vanderbilt’s life! Gloria’s outlook on life is little too optimistic to be realistic. Nice they had this opportunity to share life and beliefs while they still can.
Anderson Cooper and mother Gloria Vanderbilt get to know each other better through emails. Actually we find out a lot more about mother. Amazing how our childhoods shape us and haunt us and influence so many areas of life and future relationships. Also, we find as we have heard so often, “ Money doesn’t buy happiness.”
it was heartwarming and so true to how life is
