A masked patriot…
By day, Ian Blackheath is the most sensual rogue in the colony of Virginia. At night, he secretly rides as Pendragon, ruthless leader of the patriot cause. The last thing he needs is a ward. What is a masked raider supposed to do when a pint-sized mistress of disaster is dumped on the doorstep of his mansion? Especially since little Lucy displays a penchant for unearthing … unearthing secrets?
A reluctant British spy…
When Ian Blackheath and Lucy have an altercation in Emily d’Autrecourt’s millinery shop, the lovely Englishwoman is horrified at Blackheath’s insensitivity toward his ward. Then Lucy steals a doll from Emily’s shop— secreted inside the plaything is evidence of Emily’s role as a spy. Accepting Ian’s offer that she be Lucy’s governess is dangerous, but how else can Emily search for the doll without arousing suspicion?
A rebellion of the heart…
Ian is stunned when Emily agrees to take charge of “hurricane Lucy”. As for guarding his secret—it should be no challenge to keep Emily far from the wing where Pendragon plots rebellion. One sample of Ian’s wicked, seducing ways and the prim Englishwoman will avoid him like plague. He doesn’t expect Emily to catch fire in his arms or for the tempting seamstress to discover the secret power of her own desires. Suddenly, in a land racing toward revolution, Ian and Emily must choose. With everything to lose, do they dare to risk their hearts?

I love this book! A classic. Highly recommended.
Ian Blackheath takes on the role of Pendragon to help the Rebels cause in 1772 without realizing Emily d’Autrecourt has opened a dress shop to pass secrets to the British using her fashion dolls. When Ian’s niece steals a doll, Emily is forced to take the role of governess but can she tame the hellion child and not lose her heart to Ian, a man who seeks danger to avoid love? Cates is an expert at developing characters that take the reader on an emotional ride from start to finish.
She lost her husband, her daughter and her country. Will the new colonies of America bring a chance of happiness or more tragedy? There’s plenty of excitement in this book!
I laughed so hard I was choking about the horse. So much hurt, and, yet, there was love. Some mystery, drama, good, evil and hatred.
A wonderful story of love and betrayal, set during the American war of independence. Great characters and plot, with a surprise in the end.
Loved the characters, but felt that supposedly 6 year old Lucy was a bit too mature for 6. Her pianoforte skills, worldly knowledge and wit better suited to at least a 10 year old.
Too much emotional description. Found myself skipping. Over done & passed the point of tension the author meant to create.
Story is excellent& plot twists are well done.
Steamy sex scenes are imaginative.
Overall I recommend it to those who like steamy romantic historical novels.
Be swept back in time to Virginia pre-revolution era that brings unrest, spies, and nightraiders who seeks justice and freedom from the British. It’s a rollercoaster ride of heights of dizzy delicious passion swirling down into a vortex of uncertainties. The Raider’s Bride will keep you spellbound from the moment you begin the journey with Ian and Emily until the very end! Kimberly Cates is not afraid to write a story that is heartrendering, heart stopping and a villains with secrets. Kimberly has a writing style that I thoroughly enjoy; she’s filled this story with characters that are well thought out and each one comes across clearly, as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale, they come off the pages and pull you in, plot brims with tension-building twist, and great dialogue, witty banter, which brings this read together perfectly. Ian, a tortured soul, who has abandoned himself, so lost he has given up and would embrace death gladly. Lucy, a 8 year old child who no one in the world but her uncle Ian and doesn’t know what love is. And Emily with emotional scars that run deep who just wants to start a new life. But as Emily falls in love with Ian and Lucy will Emily’s be enough to heal their broken souls and become a family. It’s a heart pounding romance with trials and tribulations, passion, danger, uncertainty, heartbreak and the twist and turns that make this one outstanding read that you won’t want to miss.
I enjoyed this historical romance that was set in the 1770’s before the American Revolution. I received this for free and I voluntarily chose to review it. This is not for the under 18 readers. There is some sex and violence in this. Add a precocious child, and horses together and it gets real interesting. I gave it a 4* rating.
One of Kimberly Cates’s very best books!
I really enjoyed this book. Good plot with an unexpected twist and a happy ending. Story is continued in a 2nd book. I’m reading it now and loving it.
Book started out with much foul language and smutual that I read only a few chapters and decided I did not want to waste my time reading further.
