The stultifying and dehumanising effects of a caste-based society and the seductive but ultimately destructive nature of vengeance lie at the heart of Evan Winter’s tale. A feudal people known as the Omehi fight a never-ending war against encroaching tribes to maintain their hold on a peninsular they invaded two hundred years before. ‘Lesser Common’ Tau Solarin drives himself to the point of madness as he gains the warrior skills needed to avenge himself on the noble caste. Expertly structured with a keen eye for action and character, Rage of Dragons is a captivating epic heroic fantasy from a major new talent.
This book is everything! I am soo looking forward to book 2. Definitely an epic you won’t want to put down.
There are few relatively new writers who have burst on the fantasy scene with the brilliance of author Evan Winter. “Rage of Dragons”, the first novel in “The Burning” series, is absolutely breathtaking, heart-stopping, and I doubt the reader will able to put it down without trying desperately to read the whole thing in one sitting. It so amazing and motivating to see authors writing novels with worldbuilding using entirely African-inspired settings in fantasy, and Winter does an incredible job with his novel in this regard. The magic system is extremely well-thought-out, the auxiliary characters are unforgettable, and the world is painted so vividly by Winter that you will believe that you’ve lived there. Thankfully there is a burgeoning group of numerous Black and other racialized fantasy writers, including Winter, who are becoming powerhouses in the genre, adding some distinct flavour to epic fantasy, and representing the unique tales, culture, and voices of Black and other people of colour. These voices need to be heard loud and clear as being relevant and exciting, because they are. Winter is already rising towards the top of even those esteemed writers. Winter’s blood-soaked tale of oppression, love, betrayal, and loss is action-packed, and the main focus of the novel is the protagonist Tau’s unceasing thirst for vengeance. Tau is one of the most daunting fighters and indomitable spirits you will meet in fiction, be it written, television, move screen, or any other medium. When I envision him, I see something like Shaka Zulu meets John Wick. This book pulses with energy, originality, and is entirely captivating. Don’t dare miss out on reading this one.
WOW! After finishing the first 2 chapters I could not put this book down. The magic system is different than in any other book i’ve ready and I like the fact that the other explains how it works at different points throughout the book. Once the action started it didn’t stop and my adrenaline was pumping. I am really looking forward to the sequel.
An endless, unwinnable war…
A young peasant soldier destined to die for his betters…
An underworld where demons lurk and time stands still…
There are not enough days for the lesser warrior Tau to gain the fighting knowledge needed to survive wave after wave of battles, to beat the superior nobles that have been trained from birth to destroy him and to gain revenge on the three men that murdered his father.
But what if there was a way of borrowing time…
What if he could trade a piece of himself for such a gift?
When death is your only destiny, what price is too high for life?
I enjoyed this book for its action and for the journey that Tau takes to becoming an unlikely hero. I loved this book for its lore, the author’s creativity, and the way in which the hero overcomes his perceived limitations.
