Greg Iles is a master writer who pulls you from page to the next and from the of one chapter to next. His characters and dialogue builds vivid visual images in your mind as the story evolves and changes. This was the first book I ever read by Iles and led to over 15 others since then. In addition some of his books were spun into movies that were equally entertaining. In addition to the plots and character development he builds into his novels his writing style is flowing and intelligent. There’s always a quote or phrase that stays in your mind. A must read.
Love this author and he never disappoints. His Penn Cage character is believable. I’m always anxious to see what Penn Cage and his father are going to dream up.
Penn Cage is one of the most intelligent and moral characters in modern book series’. He cares about his Community, cares about his family and always tries to do the right thing, though he often struggles with the choices he’s forced to make. The historical references are always fascinating – Isles is a master at infusing the culture and history of his books’ settings into the natural flow of the book, so you don’t feel like you’re reading either a travelogue or a history book, but you learn both.
I have had the Natchez Burning trilogy in my to be read stack for awhile. I planned to start those when I realized that the first book in the Penn Cage series was The Quiet Game so I decided to start with this one. Set in Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage returns to his home in the Deep South after the death of his wife. He soon finds himself involved in an old case that involves his family, local government, and higher ups in the FBI. Not everyone wants the case solved and Penn finds himself unsure of who he can trust and in a race to find the truth while he protects his family. Great start to the series!
One of my favorite authors. Look forward to each new release.
This book introduces a character who will be the main character in many more books. I love this author, and this character.
great start to a series
Iles is a master of blending the past into a modern-day story. “The past isn’t forgotten; often it isn’t even past.”
Penn Cage is my fave! Great start to the series!
Greg Iles is my favorite living American author . I have read all of his books but two. The Quiet Game is a good one.
Excellent action-packed, with a convoluting story. Very interesting.
Good characters and interesting plot twists to keep you entertained but not so much it’s too complicated.
I’m still very new to Greg Iles’ work having just discovered him last year. I’m pretty much inhaling the stories now and enjoying every minute of it. The Quiet Game was no exception. I’d been hearing a lot about the Penn Cage series and I now have proof that all the accolades are true. Thoroughly loved the story. Enjoyed the large cast of characters, the subplots, the secrets…I adore Penn although I do think that he behaved like a lovesick boy a little too much in this book. It’s strange to say this, being a romance reader and writer but I hope to see that element toned down a bit as the series goes on. Unless Mr. Iles gives Cage women who are worth his time. The ones in this book…uggh! Still, an amazing story that is definitely worth the read-I suggest the audiobook- the narrator was spectacular!
Intense. Period.
Very much like John Grisham.
Wonderful
Can’t say enough about this author, especially the Bone Tree series.
His books are always entertaining
It’s not very often that a book can keep me intertested for long periods at a time. The author made me feel like I was there. I had never read any of his books before and I was looking for something, did’nt really know. This review is late because I’ve been reading the whole seriers. I’ve found a new author to follow.
Very interesting
