There are 6 books in this series and the 7th due out on April
Greg Iles is one of the best authors I have read. These books you can’t put down once the characters are introduced.
This series main character is Penn Cage and his dealings with the city of Natchez, Mississippi.
He started out as a prosecutor turned writer turned mayor.
Each book has its own set of new and old characters and his writing makes you feel that you are right there.
Absolutely give this series 5 stars.
This is a great book, for plot, for character, for ambience, for entertaiment, for every conceivable reason I can think of. I very much enjoy this author, he seems to improve with every subsequent book.
First book in a great mystery-thriller series!
I want to start off by saying that my husband told me to check theses books out awhile ago. I can’t believe that it took me so long to start reading this book. I am so glad that I finally did. And can’t wait to continue reading theses books. Highly recommend this book. The narrator did amazing job keeping me wanting to know more.
About Book Penn Cage just lost his wife and to take care of his daughter alone. He decides to leave Houston to move back to his home town Natchez Mississippi. To have help from his family. But when Penn returns things that were left unsolved. Penn wants to know more about and things and people end up hurt. Again I highly recommend this book. Will be starting book two soon.
I’m 20 years late to this “game,” a richly textured, deeply atmospheric, cleverly layered legal thriller set in Natchez, MI. Sure, I’m a sucker for the flawed lawyer in a world of hurt. But “The Quiet Game” plows fresh ground, and I highly recommend.
What can I say. It’s Greg Iles
Greg Isles is one of my favorite authors. I cannot get enough. Well researched and interesting
Good Book i find in Fiction by Greg ILES, I read his last 3 books published and had to find the first one in set to see how it all started .
Greg Iles is a gifted writer. He knows how to set the scene and carry his readers along on a journey of intrigue and action that doesn’t let up until the last page. Penn Cage is a prosecutor turned writer that wants nothing more than to console himself and his daughter after the searing death of his wife, Sarah. He chooses to do that in the town he grew up in, Natchez, Mississippi, where his parents still live, and welcome him and their granddaughter with open arms. He doesn’t know he’s in for the roller-coaster ride of his life when he’s confronted by a past love, an unsolved civil rights murder, and a newspaperwoman to be reckoned with. Iles’ characters are so real they’re still walking around in my living room. This riveting story of love, betrayal, murder, and racial prejudices—that reflect today’s headlines just as much as it did in 1968, where the story begins, and 1999 when this book was published—is brutally raw with emotion and gripping reality. The plot is gritty and complex, with many twists and turns, but comes together nicely at the end with a courtroom scene that rivals anything Mr. Grisham has written—and who doesn’t love Grisham. I will definitely look forward to reading more books about Penn Cage by Mr. Iles.
too many characters to keep track of
A very well written book/story. Iles at his best
Love the Penn Cage novels and anything by Greg Isles. Well written and exceiting
Best book I have read in a long time! So glad it is number 1 in a series! Now reading number 2.
This is my first book by this author. The book seemed to start out a little slow but really became a page turner. The book kept me in suspense until the end.
Better than Grisham
Isles is a master and this gem is no exception. Brilliant prose, plot and characters – what more could you want?
Like all of the Penn Cage books great!
Greg’s books are wonderfully written and I thoroughly enjoy each one I end up learning more about the culture at the same time.
I found the book kept my interest and was hard to put down. Look forward to reading the next Penn Cage novel.
A quick read, THE QUIET GAME is an engrossing crime drama that will keep you eagerly turning each page.
Like most Scott Turow books, this book revolves around a former lawyer-prosecutor and his unraveling of a complex case with lots of interesting players with hidden motives. The protagonist, Penn Cage, has become a successful writer of crime books. When he and his young daughter return to his hometown of Natchez, Mississippi after the death of his wife, Penn discovers his upstanding physician-father is being blackmailed.
As Penn works to help his parents, he begins to uncover links between the blackmailer, a 30 year old unsolved civil rights murder, and a prominent wealthy businessman– the same man who happens to be the father of his high school girlfriend. As he digs deeper, with the help of a beautiful (of course) and age-appropriate newspaper publisher, Penn becomes embroiled in a world of bad cops, sinister hit men, simmering racial tension, hidden files, and a conspiracy that seems to reach all the way to J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Oh, and along the way, Penn also solves the mystery of his lost high school love. Reading the book feels a bit like peeling away layers of an onion. As each new layer is discovered, the story gets a little more complicated.
It’s not brilliant writing and you may find some of it predictable, since it does foster many of the stereotypes of other Southern crime dramas — like crooked Southern politicians and rednecks with guns who want to take the law into their own hands. But I found it mostly fun. And since it was written 15 years ago, maybe those stereotypes weren’t as firmly established when the book was first published.
The good news is that if you like it, you can then read many other Penn Cage novels by Greg Iles. This one is just the first.
