NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERDetective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are forced to confront the past as they try to solve a crime that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of a quiet, historic medieval town in EnglandThe cozy, bucolic town of Ludlow is stunned when one of its most revered and respected citizens–Ian Druitt, the local deacon–is accused of a serious … deacon–is accused of a serious crime. Then, while in police custody, Ian is found dead. Did he kill himself? Or was he murdered?
When Barbara Havers is sent to Ludlow to investigate the chain of events that led to Ian’s death, all the evidence points to suicide. But Barbara can’t shake the feeling that she’s missing something. She decides to take a closer look at the seemingly ordinary inhabitants of Ludlow–mainly elderly retirees and college students–and discovers that almost everyone in town has something to hide.
A masterful work of suspense, The Punishment She Deserves sets Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Inspector Thomas Lynley against one of their most intricate cases. Fans of the longtime series will love the many characters from Elizabeth George’s previous novels who join Lynley and Havers, and readers new to the series will quickly see why she is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed writers of our time. Both a page-turner and a deeply complex story about the lies we tell, the lies we believe, and the redemption we need, this novel will be remembered as one of George’s best.

Not one of my favorites
Glad she’s back!
I love her books. Good plots, good characters, good atmosphere…
Like the main character
Love anything written by Elizabeth George.
I loved the book but hated the ending.
Elizabeth George is great. Her characters are lovable. The story gets complicated but it’s worth trying to keep everything straight. I recommend any of the Thomas Lynley series.
She’s a awesome writer
One of my favorite authors.
Elizabeth George is always a great read!
Well written!
Way too long and convoluted….too many sub-plots that were contrived. I generally like this author but this was probably her worst. The only good things were realistic descriptions of actual places in UK…I googled them and learned something
For fans of Elizabeth George-this one is okay -It tends to go on a bit and could have likely ended a tad sooner-Ending was just too obvious and predictable -EG does a superlative job presenting her characters -and their machinations -once again superlatively
Not one of the better mysteries in the series but very readable.
I love Elizabeth George she does the research so it feels authentic and she is a master at the plot to keep you guessing
Too long winded. But I read all of hers because of the characters and plot.
Pretty well crafted, but found that the personality faults/issues for some charcters were repeated & redundant.
Her mysteries are never predictable. You think you know “who done it” but you’re wrong. Even on the final pages she will shatter your assumptions. Love her writing.
I was so bummed by this book that it was hard to continue to read another by Elizabeth George.
Long but definitely a well written mystery with interesting plot and well developed characters.
