The first book in the series ended with the Loughman brothers splitting up to find their missing father and find out more about a group called The Saints, who have world domination in mind, (Pinky and the Brain on steroids) including the creation of a bioweapon, called Ragnarok, which their father Orrin managed to steal, before he was kidnapped and all his men executed. But everything is not as it seems. Pilot Mia Carter was the last to see Orrin alive. He had handed the vial to Mia, asking her to mail it to Callie, back on the family ranch. When the brother split up at the end of the last book (this would be hard to read as a stand alone), youngest brother Cullen goes to find Mia, and finds her just in the nick of time. From then on after, the two of them continue to jump from the fire to the frying pan and back again, while they try to find Orrin and stay alive. And since it is a romance, discover that they are each other’s half. None stop action, great characters and an intriguing plot. Hopefully all threads will be tied in the next book, The Saints defeated, the murder of their mother finally solved and Cullen can do what he always wished for: return to the ranch, with the love of his life at his side, raising cattle and riding horses.
**I received a copy of The Protector from Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press in exchange for a voluntary and honest review**
The Protector by Donna Grant is the second book in the Sons of Texas series, although I read it as a stand alone it was easy to follow the plot.
Cullen Loughman is determined to find out who kidnapped his father and take down the group even if it means he’ll get hurt or worse. But to find him, he’ll need the help of ex-Air Force pilot Mia Carter, who can fly anything with wings and who’ll do anything for Orrin who’s been a father figure to her. But they’ll have to take on the Russians and a ultra secret group called the Saints to find Orrin as well as Ragnarok formula that if released into the air would be catastrophic to all mankind. It will take everything they both have been trained for to find Cullen’s father in time and rescue him.
Mia Carter grew up privileged with a demanding father but who let her learn to find the corporate jet as soon as she could reach the pedals. But when she joins the Air Force as soon as she turned 18, he was livid. Mia soon chafed at the restrains in the Air Force and resigned her commission becoming a pilot for hire. But when one of her jobs became sketchy and Orrin and his Black ops team would rescued her, and be there for her when needed. When Cullen helps her out of another sticky situation he asks her to help find his father using her interesting contacts. Can they find Orrin in time and keep everyone from finding the formula? Can she reach out to her father to help both Cullen and herself to find Orrin?
I loved the scene in the warehouse where she asks the thugs to buy cookies and she always seemed to have A LOT of weapons stashed nearby that will come in handy many times. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading Wyatt and Callie’s story next.

book two in the Sons of Texas series. loved reading Cullen & Mia’s love story. She is one badass b*tch and I really enjoyed how the story progressed in the family’s fight against the Saints.
Get ready for a thrilling ride full of danger and romance when sexy Marine Force Recon captain Cullen Loughman learns that his father has been kidnapped and he joins up with daring ex – Air Force pilot Mia Carter to find him in Donna Grant’s The Protector, the second book in the Sons of Texas series.
First, let me say that this is the only book that I have read in the Sons of Texas series, although I will definitely be reading The Hero soon, and I had no problem following the story line but this is definitely a series where all the books will have to be read to get the full story. The Loughman Brothers each have a book which tells of his part in the overall story and each book has an ending but doesn’t give away the main story’s conclusion as I have discovered by reading The Protector.
I have read most of Donna Grant’s books and I while I most enjoy the paranormal ones especially the Dragon Kings, she has continued her expertise of sucking me into the story and refusing to let go in the Sons of Texas series. The action is phenomenal and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Even the romance between the couple in this story keeps you wondering since the danger and the situation keeps them on the run and they are not your average good guys since they definitely have their own way of getting to the heart of things and have you agreeing every step of the way.
All the characters that take part in the overall plot add to the twists and turns and grabs your attention ensuring that you want to know every last detail but of course the main characters, Cullen and Mia take the front seat and steer you through the plot with thrilling abandon.
The Protector is a book that has me hankering for more of the Loughman Brothers, of course after I read The Hero, I will have to wait until The Legend releases in June to get another fix.
