THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick“There is so much to relate to and throughout the novel, there is a sharp feminist edge. Loved this one, and you will too.”—New York Times bestselling author Roxane GayThe New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Date serves up a novel about what happens when a public proposal doesn’t turn into a happy ending, … when a public proposal doesn’t turn into a happy ending, thanks to a woman who knows exactly how to make one on her own…
When someone asks you to spend your life with him, it shouldn’t come as a surprise—or happen in front of 45,000 people.
When freelance writer Nikole Paterson goes to a Dodgers game with her actor boyfriend, his man bun, and his bros, the last thing she expects is a scoreboard proposal. Saying no isn’t the hard part—they’ve only been dating for five months, and he can’t even spell her name correctly. The hard part is having to face a stadium full of disappointed fans…
At the game with his sister, Carlos Ibarra comes to Nik’s rescue and rushes her away from a camera crew. He’s even there for her when the video goes viral and Nik’s social media blows up—in a bad way. Nik knows that in the wilds of LA, a handsome doctor like Carlos can’t be looking for anything serious, so she embarks on an epic rebound with him, filled with food, fun, and fantastic sex. But when their glorified hookups start breaking the rules, one of them has to be smart enough to put on the brakes…

There is so much to relate to and throughout the novel, there is a sharp feminist edge. Loved this one, and you will too.
I was anticipating this followup to Guillory’s The Wedding Date. While The Wedding date tells the story of Drew and Alex, The Proposal is the story of Carlos and Nikole. Because Carlos is Drew’s best friend who figured prominently in The Wedding Date, I’m hoping there’s going to be a couple to spin off from The Proposal. I love Jasmine Guillory’s writing just that much. Not only is Guillory recommended by the Roxane Gay, writer of such wonderful nonfiction books as Bad Feminist and Hunger, but she is also a writer of note who pens such believable multicultural novels. Her characters are believable and come from such interesting walks of life you can’t help but be drawn in to their drama. While Carlos and Drew, the male protagonists were both doctors, Nikole and Alexa are strong women who have interesting careers (Freelance Writer and Mayor’s Chief of Staff), and who will only accept the trappings of a relationship on their terms. The feminist slant of these books indeed is what keeps me coming back. Read The Proposal and see how a woman who refuses the ‘grandest of gestures’ proposal of her short-term boyfriend in front of thousands of baseball fans fares in the romance department after the fallout. The Proposal will delight you until the very end.
I took this book for a beach read over spring break. I am not a good beach reader. I want to be walking or playing in the water. However, this book made 5 hours on the flight home feel effortless. In fact, I wished we had just 30 more minutes so I could finish it. For those who DO like beach reading as much as airplane reading, this is a great choice. UPDATED: I can’t believe I forgot to mention how adorably funny is the moment the hero realizes how he feels about the heroine. I burst out laughing on the plane.
The premise alone was enough to grab me, but the writing style and the romantic tension because these lovely characters held on to my heart.
2.5 stars
The proposal is a fun concept for a novel, a young woman, Nik, is attending a baseball game with her boyfriend of 6 months, for his birthday. She is shocked when he proposes. Even more shocking she turns him down, in front of the whole stadium on the jumbo tron. A few rows up Carlos and his sister witness the whole tragic event unfold and decide to step in and save Nik before the crowd turns on her. So begins the relationship of Nik and Carlos. The novel takes us through their entire relationship, awkward dates, meeting the family and insipid text messages. I thought the page turner was a cute concept for a novel but as their relationship went on and no action happened in the story I became very bored and slugged through the last third of the book. Its a pass for me.
This was a cute, romantic comedy and I’m really starting to become a big fan of Jasmine Guillory.
Carlos and Nikole meet during an embarrassing moment for Nikole at a baseball game. Carlos saves the day and the rest is history. I really liked how they met because it was unusual and as a baseball fan I always wondered what would happen if the person said no. As the story progress Carlos and Nikole hit it off and agree to keep things causal. I loved the banter and chemistry between the couple. Both characters are hard workers with good heads on their shoulders.
Carlos was a totally sweetheart but at times he had a Superman complex and he needed to relax a little. Other than that he was such a good book boyfriend. He’s been added to my list! Nikole at times could be a little wishy washy but given her track record I can see why she was hesitant when it came to Carlos.
It’s very hard for me to believe that this is Jasmine Guillory second book. It was well written book with a wonderful diverse cast of characters. It was sweet, funny, sexy and endearing. The best part is that I felt like I was one of the gang while I was reading. I finished this book in one sitting and I’m sad it’s over. This book will be going on my Top 2018 list with out a doubt!
The best in series. Cleaver and delightful! A strong lead female character and a insightful and charming lead male character if only read one of these books in this series this is the one to pick
This book was soooooo entertaining. Jasmine Gillory does an awesome job writing stories that keep the readers reain and wanting more! A must Read!
I did not realize this book was the second in a series but found that it did not affect the story. Nik is proposed to in front of the crowd at Dodger Stadium and it does not go as planned. Fast forward to her having a chance meeting of Carlos and his sister. I liked watching from the pages as they became friends. Carlos is a generous guy who comes from a large family whom he does anything for. Watch as Carlos and Nik grapple with maintaining their identities while being there for each oth
2/2/21 – A great chick-lit novel perfect for a day on the couch or a day on the beach. It starts out with a lot of action, and the rest of the book doesn’t disappoint. Seeing the character and the various relationships develop over the course of the book was great. Both characters are fantastic, and you really root for them.
Very good, have read all of her books. Very funny and can;t wait for more of this author
Wonderful read.
I laughed out loud!

This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased, honest opinion.
I was very much looking forward to reading this story but was disappointed. I feel like there was barely any plot to the story. We have Nikole who was proposed to at a baseball game and caught off guard. She turned down the proposal and was left stranded at the game. Carlos and his sister Angela were at the game and came to Nikole’s rescue when the camera crew threatened to pounce on her. From there we have a bit of instalove. Carlos and Nikole fall into a friends with benefits sort of relationship. They repeatedly tell themselves over and over how it’s just a friendship and nothing more. The notion is pounded into the reader’s head continuously. I felt like that wasn’t enough to keep the reader entertained, at least it wasn’t in my case. I kept reading and reading realizing that nothing was happening! We have tiny side bits of drama throughout the story but I kept waiting on the story to “get going”.
I had issues with the main characters for a few different reasons. Carlos’s father passed away and Carlos felt he needed to be EVERYTHING to EVERY member of his family. He runs to his cousin’s side at the drop of a hat even though she has a husband and other family members. Moments like that felt quite odd. When Carlos wasn’t at work being a pediatrician, he was running some errand for a family member. It took over the story quite a bit.
I also didn’t quite vibe with Nikole. She’s a strong, independent woman but at times she came off a little cold. Nikole cared deeply for her two closest friends but when it came to anyone else…..all bets were off. Granted Nikole has had some terrible relationships so I kind of see where she’s coming from but it was a lot for a reader when they thought they were reading a romance novel.
Overall, it was a bit too boring for my tastes. The romance in this was also lackluster. I honestly couldn’t care less if these two ended up together. I just wanted them to admit their feelings and move on one way or the other.
This author’s books are all very good contemporary romances with family and friend connections among all of them.
This starts with a powerful emotional punch, the rest of the story doesn’t seem to maintain that but it was still entertaining enough to me to finish reading. The humor helps tremendously, it’s good but not as good as the first book. I like that he’s romantic and she’s upfront, pretty much. I can’t wait to read the next one.
I really enjoyed reading this book also. I enjoyed all the different characters in the book. I really enjoyed this one also. So many different characters and different backgrounds, it was great to read and imagine the characters.
I am a total fan of Jasmine Guilford having read this. It is really a cut above the typical romance novel.
Couldn’t get into it
