THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick“There is so much to relate to and throughout the novel, there is a sharp feminist edge. Loved this one, and you will too.”—New York Times bestselling author Roxane GayThe New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Date serves up a novel about what happens when a public proposal doesn’t turn into a happy ending, … when a public proposal doesn’t turn into a happy ending, thanks to a woman who knows exactly how to make one on her own…
When someone asks you to spend your life with him, it shouldn’t come as a surprise—or happen in front of 45,000 people.
When freelance writer Nikole Paterson goes to a Dodgers game with her actor boyfriend, his man bun, and his bros, the last thing she expects is a scoreboard proposal. Saying no isn’t the hard part—they’ve only been dating for five months, and he can’t even spell her name correctly. The hard part is having to face a stadium full of disappointed fans…
At the game with his sister, Carlos Ibarra comes to Nik’s rescue and rushes her away from a camera crew. He’s even there for her when the video goes viral and Nik’s social media blows up—in a bad way. Nik knows that in the wilds of LA, a handsome doctor like Carlos can’t be looking for anything serious, so she embarks on an epic rebound with him, filled with food, fun, and fantastic sex. But when their glorified hookups start breaking the rules, one of them has to be smart enough to put on the brakes…

I couldn’t finish it. About mid way thru got bored. Felt like it was reading like a kinda silly romance novel. Lost interest. Never used to be able to stop reading a book mid way thru, but have decided there are sooooo many great books I don’t want to waste my time with something that isn’t enjoyable. Sorry for those who are big fans, but…..
Takes on the issue of women in abusive or controlling relationships and handles it with care.
I was an okay book, but did not live up to all the hype in my opinion. I am not a prude, but thought the “f” word was used a little more than necessary. It was almost as if someone went through and added it in a few random places.
I loved everything about The Proposal and would say it’s a pretty perfect romance. Even though there were times when I was like “Why would a woman as cool and smart as Nik be with a loser like Fisher?” (the guy who proposes to her after five months of dating on the Jumbotron at a baseball game, but spells her name wrong), I felt for her. The way her romance with Carlos unfolds is natural and sweet. Guillory does an excellent job of letting readers into the head of both Nik and Carlos, from their interest in each other, which starts out as a casual friends with benefits interest and builds from there, to their assorted emotional baggage. As a freelance writer, I related to so many of Nik’s thoughts and fears about her career. Plus there are just such charming characters and scenes, like the Skylight Books (an amazing LA bookstore with a tree in the middle!) scene, where they talk about needing books, and the way book recommendations play a role. Both Nik and Carlos seemed so real, with real fears and friends and families (mostly Carlos’s) and interests and worries. I enjoyed the happy ending but honestly could have kept reading another book or two about these two. Thankfully, there are more Jasmine Guillory books on the way to satisfy me.
The Proposal was an adorable, fluffy story that was akin to drinking a hot chocolate in front of a roaring fireplace in winter. Nikole has just ended her relationship with a real class act, saved by Carlos and his sister Angela. Nikole has no intention of dating anytime soon. Carlos, whom we met in The Wedding Date as Drew’s bestie, is a strong male lead with a healthy respect and love for the women around him. After his father passed away, Carlos took it upon himself to take up that patriarch mantel and always puts family first. He has convinced himself he doesn’t have time to date seriously because he needs to be able to be there for his family and a moment’s notice. This book carries on at a very quick pace and is very easy to binge read.
I think what I enjoy most about Jasmine Guillory’s work was highlighted best in The Proposal. She deftly writes diverse characters without resorting to stereotypical traits that are off-putting. Rather than having Carlos act like an overbearing alpha male, he is an observant, funny, and caring man with a career in medicine. I would say pediatrician but I’m not sure that label is accurate anymore now that he works at a clinic that primarily serves teens. Nikole always says what she means and prides herself on being a strong, independent woman.
I know her next book will take us back to Alexa’s friends and their weird vibe but I am hoping that Courtney gets her own happily ever after. I need her fabulous print dresses, cupcake stores, and love of all things that glitter in my life.
On its surface, The Proposal is a breezy romance, but Guillory uses the fun story to address big questions about how race, family ties, and how past experiences affect future relationships. The diverse cast of characters are all likable and the banter is witty and fun. A delightful romantic comedy.
Great Rom-Com! Loved that Jasmine Guillory brought characters in from her first novel, The Wedding Date. Can’t wait to read her next novel!
Sexy follow up to her debut The Wedding Date!
This author gets better with each book. I am really enjoying this series and all the characters. This was a cute romantic comedy and I loved every minute of it.
Nikole and Carlos meet at a baseball game where Carlos saved the day, the rest was history. They had great chemistry and banter that kept your attention. I really liked both characters.
If you have not read a book by this author you need to. Jasmine Guillory has a great series and writes page-turners. I am looking forward to more work from this author.
Such a fun read . It is a light hearted look at modern love . A page turner with a happy ending
I was excited to read this because I loved the author’s previous book, The Wedding Date. This book was ok but didn’t capture the humor and romance of the The Wedding Date. The characters from that book make a brief appearance but not enough to save this story.
The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory was a quick read that made me laugh (and cry at times), but unfortunately I just didn’t love it.
What it’s about: Nikole Paterson goes to a Dodgers game with her boyfriend of 5 months, only to get proposed to on the jumbotron and endure a very public experience of telling him no. Luckily, Carlos Ibarra who is at the game with his sister is sitting just a few rows behind Nik and comes to the rescue; not only getting her out from in front of the camera crew, but getting her out of the stadium as well. Neither of them are looking for anything serious, but once they get involved in a relationship the future for both of them isn’t quite so clear anymore.
I loved the diversity in this novel, but there were not any distinct voices. I felt like any character’s words could have been substituted for another and everyone seemed to talk exactly the same including Carlos. On the good side, there was a lot of sarcasm and humor that I loved, and The Proposal did make me laugh quite a bit. There were also a couple of places I teared up, if only for the subject matter and not necessarily the way the book was written. I thought that the idea behind this novel was a great one and had the potential to be much better than it actually turned out, even though it did make me laugh.
Unfortunately, I also found the novel to be quite repetitive in many places, and got sick of hearing the same things over and over again. Also, I think most people will find this book very predictable.
Final Thought: I went into The Proposal with an open mind, and I just don’t know if Guillory’s writing style is for me. I don’t really have any interest in reading her first novel now, but I think it’s great that she’s been having a lot of success and has been able to publish 2 novels. This book will probably work better for some people, but it just wasn’t super great for me. I have seen a lot of people say it might be better for someone first starting with the contemporary romance genre, but that is where I am and it didn’t really work for me either. I think this is just a book that you have to check out and decide for yourself.

Jasmine Guillory, Author of “The Proposal” has written an entertaining, enjoyable, and witty novel. The Genres for “The Proposal” are Fiction, Women’s Fiction and Romance. The author describes her characters as each having their own set of problems and insecurities.
Nicole Patterson, a writer is a lucky lady to have great friends, and the opportunity to work from home on many of her stories. She goes to a Dodger’s Game with her boyfriend, who shocks her with his proposal for marriage on the public billboard. Nicole has been dating her boyfriend a very short time, and is not ready for this. Publicly, Nicole says “No” as her boyfriend is on bent knee with the ring. Sadly he misspelled her name on the board.
As the media and cameras head over to Nicole, Carlos Ibarra, a physician with his sister come to Nicole’s rescue by pretending that they know her. Nicole is very appreciate, and offers to first buy Carlos a drink, and then dinner. Nik’s friends feel that a rebound relationship with Carlos is just the thing that Nicole needs. After all, Carlos is a single, handsome doctor, who wouldn’t want a serious relationship. Or would he?
I appreciate that Jasmine Guillory brings up women taking self-defense classes to protect themselves. The author also discusses the importance of self worth and self respect. I would recommend this story for those readers that like an easy, delightful story. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
This is a quick, fun read! The story is cute, the characters are all really interesting. It’s a perfect book to read when you’ve had a bad week and just want to read something fun and lighthearted. I do have to say – I’ll never look at sour cream the same way again!

After a couple of intense books in a row it’s been nice to unwind with a little lighter romantic fun . Nik had only been dating Fisher for 5 months when he suddenly and VERY publicly pops the question! When her actor boyfriend doesn’t get the answer he’s looking for he takes his man-bun and leaves her to face all the unwanted attention.. in swoops Carlos and his sister Angela but is Carlos just being a sympathetic helping hand or has Fisher’s debacle of a proposal led her right into the arms of the man of her dreams? A great book for a lazy weekend in the hammock.

I have not read anything else by Ms Guillory so I didn’t know what to expect from her .
The Proposal is cute and sweet and fluffy, and just the thing that I needed for my weekend read.
I liked the diversity of the characters – though it did irk me that when 2 POC characters met up they were surprised that their partners had not told them about the other being a POC. I just didn’t understand why this was brought up when it didn’t really seem to matter? But this could just be me.
Not going to lie, I did crave cake as I read and cupcakes were being talked about. Not good for the diet!
I liked Carlos and Nikole and wanted them to be more than friends right from the start, and enjoyed their journey to get more.
I liked this book, it wasn’t one that will tax your brain or your feelings too much, but it was just what I wanted at the time.
The Proposal features two likable lead characters that meet under incredibly awkward but memorable circumstances. This new-found acquaintanceship leads to more opportunities to connect until a no-strings-attached romance blooms. Each have past and present circumstances that make this type of non-relationship ideal, and although the ending may be predictable, this romance trope is a winner for a reason: the journey to the last page is typically filled with plenty of sexy fun.
The Proposal hits the mark with its characters. Jasmine Guillory uses her characters to showcase elements of feminism, diversity, inclusion, and the concept that love doesn’t always have to feel like a trap. In my opinion, the writing is dialogue heavy and very easy to read (which may be a positive or negative based on reader preference), and there are appreciated nods to the importance of family and physical health. There’s also lots of cupcakes and laughter-inducing rosé wine, but I liked that this book was not just about these two characters and their romance. We also get to meet family and besties and are privy to some great bonding moments.
This was my first reading experience with this author and I liked it overall. The theme of female empowerment runs strong and Guillory writes a believably respectful hero that compliments our heroine well. Overall, a smile-worthy storyline that many readers will likely enjoy.
