The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American artist, philosopher and writer Kahlil Gibran. Originally published in 1923, it is Gibran’s best known work and has been translated into over 40 different languages. The prophet, Almustafa, has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is … him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with work, love, marriage, eating and drinking, joy and sorrow, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, pleasure, beauty, religion, crime and punishment, reason and passion, and death.

The understanding of so many aspects of life, are absolutely astounding. GIBRAN sees and explains life in ways that surpass ego, and emphasize love and understanding. There will be many readers who will be moved and have their minds open to new or deeper understandings. Others will hold to philosophical views that may not allow them to accept GIBRAN’S depth of love and simplicity, and that will be a choice.
Wisdom shines on every page. This book taught me, among other things, how to work – ‘…a bread baked without love feeds half a man’s hunger.’
My beautiful and philosophical book about life, love, and so many aspects of day to day existence. Love going back to this book every few years, to get more depth and nuance from the narrative. Highly recommend!
I have no idea what to say about this. It’s not really revelatory but the worldview the Prophet presents is kind and open.
Absolutely wonderful book. Such good and substantial poetry-philosophy that it brought me to tears multiple times. Very highly recommended !
Sometimes, there are books that are too beautiful to describe. The Prophet is one of them. I will be honest with you. I did not know who Kahlil Gibran was until I came across this quote on Tumblr.
“How beautiful to find a heart that loves you, without asking you for anything, but be okay.”
I loved it so much that I searched for his other works and stumbled across The Prophet.
The Prophet is considered Gibran’s best work and even though I haven’t read anything else from him, I believe it’s true. It is a collection of 26 prose poetry essays on topics like love, friendship, joy, and sorrow among many others.
When I read the first chapter, I knew in my heart that this book was for me. I am about to face a big change in my life and the prophet’s words about leaving the city to go back to his birthplace pretty much summed up what I feel. There is a certain comfort in other people putting into words things you don’t even know how to say.
I haven’t read a lot of classic books in my life but one thing is for certain. I absolutely love the way they are written. There’s something oddly fascinating about the way they phrase sentences. That, coupled with Gibran’s profound and beautiful writing, made me read this book in one sitting. I highlighted this book like crazy.
I won’t pretend that I really understood the deeper meaning of all of it. This is the kind of book that speaks like a mirror to your soul. You only get what your heart is willing to give.
