A letter brings him back to his Amish family. It will take someone truly extraordinary to make him stay. Roman is on the verge of leaving the Amish ways. Feeling confined by the strict rules, he longs to do something more with his life. But when things don’t go as planned, Roman’s prospects outside of the community dwindle. Upon learning that his beloved grandmother has died and left a letter … grandmother has died and left a letter urging him to reconcile with his brother in Birch Creek, Roman decides to return home. But he doesn’t plan to stay for long.
Leanna Chupp has always made her own way in her small community of Birch Creek. Though some may call her unconventional—strange, even—Leanna is happy. Her unique outlook on life has meant she’s never had many suitors pursuing courtship, which Leanna doesn’t mind. She is content being single.
But when Roman and Leanna find themselves working together again, everything changes. Though neither fit squarely within the strictures of the Amish faith, their differences could be the very thing to help them form a deeper connection to their community and to each other. The question remains: will this strengthening bond be enough to make Roman stay for good?

I received a copy of this book from The Fiction Guild. I was not required or compensated for my review. This is the second book in this series and it was wonderful. Kathleen has a way of writing each of the characters into her stories so that you feel what they are feel and understand what they are going through. Even though they live without computer and phone and electricity the lost of art of writing letters is a little lost now. Sitting down and taking the time to think about what you need to express to another is wonderful and having a grandmother sit down and writing down what her last wishes were for her grandson was wonderful. And like the regular English people gossip but the words hurt more when they are false. I enjoyed this book like I have enjoyed other written by Kathleen. Keep writing wonderful stories.
This Amish book is not just like all the others. I enjoyed reading this book!
It was a very interesting book and I had to keep reading it to see what would happen next. Also it was enlightening to see that the Amish have the same kind of problems that the English have.
An awesome book/story!!
A good read. Good characters.
The Promise of a Letter by Kathleen Fuller is the second An Amish Letters Novel. It is August in Birch Creek, Ohio. Roman Raber left his Amish community of Draperville, but things have not gone as planned. He wishes to go to college to become an engineer, but he cannot get the funding he needs. Roman receives a missive telling him his beloved grandmother has passed away. She left him a letter suggesting that he reconcile with his brother, Daniel. Roman knows it will not be easy, but he does know it is the right decision. Roman knows that Daniel will not make the task easy, but Roman is hoping Daniel will forgive him in time.
Leanna Chupp is an unusual Amish woman. She is twenty-four, 6-foot-tall, unmarried and works at Daniel Raber’s small engine repair shop. Leanna enjoys her work (has a knack for it) and is happy with her independence. Shortly after Roman returns to the community and starts working at Raber’s Small Engine Repair, Leanna finds herself out of a job without a warning or a reason. An accident brings Roman and Leanna together to work towards a mutual goal. They slowly get to know each other, and Leann begins to envision a different future for herself. But is Roman ready to commit to the Amish community? Will Daniel be able to forgive his brother?
The Promise of a Letter is a well-written, has a steady pace and beautiful setting. I liked the characters especially Leanna Chupp. I found her to be a refreshing change. I appreciated that she had an unusual occupation and that she was not afraid to be herself. It was nice that the pair become friends and get to know each other before the romance develops. The story had good life lessons (giving and accepting forgiveness, power of prayer, holding on to your faith, gossip). My favorite was the harmful effects of rumors/gossip. The Christian element is noticeable, but it was light (handled very well). My rating for The Promise of a Letter is 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). I did feel that the ending was rushed. The Promise of a Letter is a sweet, heartwarming story with good messages. I am looking forward to reading the next book in An Amish Letters series that will contain Ivy’s story.
What a great book! Author Kathleen Fuller hit this one out of the park. Although this is Book 2, it works as a standalone. I haven’t read Book 1 in An Amish Letters series and had no trouble following the story line.
Forgiveness is a common thread throughout. We see that even when it’s difficult and not “earned”, we can still forgive the way God instructs us. And with forgiveness comes relationships mended in a wonderful way.
This story will thrust you into Amish life. The descriptions are so well done you’ll feel as if you’re really watching things unfold. The characters are well developed and they struggle with real issues. Such a simple theme made for a heartfelt read. I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Loved this story! Leanna, not the traditional Amish young woman, enjoys repairing small machines and working with her hands. She loves a challenge. She dislikes cooking, cleaning, baking, sewing–all the traditional things Amish women do. She works in a small machine repair shop for Jalon. Jalon’s brother, Roman, worked there for a short time before leaving to live in the Englisch world. The two brothers grew up in a home with unloving parents. Only their grandmother showed them love and affection.
Leanna is fired from her beloved job due to the gossip of two women in the community. A good lesson on gossip is in this story.
Roman returns due to a letter from his deceased grandmother’s wishes. Will Jalon allow him to return to work in the shop and forgive him?
Great story!
I was given a free ecopy of this to read by the publisher, Thomas Nelson and Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Roman has left the Amish and his brother. He wanted to attend college. When his Grandmother passes away and he learns about it he goes back to his Amish Faith. He meets his Father at the grave site and is given a letter from his Grandmother to him. He never got along with his Father and Mother and him and his brother were raised by his Grandparents. In the letter his Grandmother wanted for him and his brother to reunited and get along. He joins the Amish faith and goes to see his brother. His brother is not happy to see him. There is tension because how Roman left without a word but due to the letter he allows him to stay. Leanna Chupp worked in Romans brother shop at repairing equipment but was fired when two noisy women were gossiping about them having a affair. When Roman comes back to work and finds that Leanna Chupp was fired tension starts. It is a beautiful story of forgiving and love.
