Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you’ll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old … centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that’s home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

If you’ve seen the movie then you’ve almost read the book.
Its done from the perspective of a young boy about to have a story told to him by his grandfather.
The boy thinks he’s only interested in stories that are all action with no love story.
He’s assured that the “kissing parts” can be skipped over.
In the end the boy discovers that you can …
This one needs no explanation. Great fun and a masterclass in writing.
love it
Morgenstern’s tale of true love, death, life, riches, friendship, and fire swamps is fiercely compelling and chock full of Goldman’s tongue in cheek humor. Adventure awaits in this “oldie but goodie” and S. Morgenstern’s sequel is sure to be equally grand.
AWESOME!!!
I read this book when it was first published, long before the movie (which I also love), and I reread it every few years because it is just that good. Clever, adventurous, heroic, romantic – even the modern-day bits are brilliant. Read it again? As you wish!
An absolute classic
So happy to hear this novel. It’s one of my favorite stories and it’s been on my request for forever. If you haven’t watch the film yet, you must. You also must listen to the audiobook and read the novel. It’s a great story and it made me laugh out loud listening to the audiobook as well as watching the film, which I’ve probably seen about 1 …
Cultural touch point. Required reading to be a certain brand of geek. Outlandish use of tropes.
I loved the movie as a child and was excited to learn it was based on a book when I got older. The book is charming and sweet and well written. The characters and plot are engaging. It’s an easy read that invites being re-read over and over.
Wonderful story.
Fabulous.
This book is a classic. Way better than the movie (which I love!) if you love sarcasm, you’ll enjoy this book
I’m not sure how to describe this to someone who hasn’t read it as most of the folks I know have. Meta, whimsical, thoughtful, bizarre — all in all, a fine read.
Quite simply one of the best books ever written.
Loved it!
Way better than the very very good movie. Many layers of story and quite fun!
This book is one of a kind. Originally written as Florinese history with tales of adventure, murder and romance mixed in. Now it has transformed. No longer are the tales of adventure just mixed in, they have become the main attraction that you have to read in order to believe.
Great
As charming as the movie!
